  • This study is to investigate the removal rates of nutrient in water, the biomass of water plants, and the total amounts of T-N and T-P uptakes by water plants to evaluate the ecological characteristics of the constructed wetland for treatment of livestock wastewater in Yangji-ri, Nonsan-si from June through November 2011. During the experimental period, the monthly plant biomass of constructed wetland in July were the highest as 669.4 kg, while the lowest in November as 200.1 kg. The research showed that the average nitrogen and phosphorus contents in aboveground and underground biomass of Phragmites australis were $21.9{\pm}0.6{\sim}32.1{\pm}1.5mg/g$, $15.1{\pm}5.5{\sim}24.9{\pm}5.7mg/g$, $1.5{\pm}0.3{\sim}2.4{\pm}0.2mg/g$ and $1.6{\pm}0.6{\sim}2.5{\pm}0.6mg/g$, respectively. The maximum amount of T-N and T-P uptake by Phragmites australis were 28.0 kg in July and 2.5 kg in June, respectively, while the minimum amount of T-N and T-P uptake by Phragmites australis were 9.7 kg and 0.7 kg in November, respectively. The removal rates of T-N and T-P in constructed wetland for treating livestock wastewater were 23.0 % and 59.1 %, respectively. The results of this study is expected to deduce the circulation of contaminants and nutrient in the wetland afterwards.

  • Samples were obtained with a set net during 7 months between March and October in 1987 off the coast of Hwasun, southern part of Cheju Island. Most of organisms, representing 36 species, were less than 20cm(96%) in length, and 30g(74%) in weight. The four most abundant species were jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus ; squid, Todarodes pacificus ; mackerel, Scomber japonicus ; and Apogon semilineatus, which comprised about 89% of the total individuals and about 70% of the total weight. Diversity index, the number of species and information index for individual were high in early spring, even though biomass was not abundant. On the other hand, diversity index and information index for individual were relatively high in August in spite of low occurrence of the species number. A cluster analysis of 24 species which appeared more than twice during the 7 samplings were illustrated from the similarity matrix. All of the 24species were grouped at the 0.14 similarity level. They were divided into four groups at 0.50 level.

  • The results of laboratory experiments with microcosms containing Daphnia magna and Chlorella vulgaris demonstrated decrease of the structural exergy of artificial communities after the addition of model toxicants phenol and cobalt chloride. Structural exergy changes were more expressed than changes of components biomasses and total biomass of the community. It once more points to the possibility of the use structural exergy as ecosystem health reflecting parameter.

  • Field survey on the spatio-temporal distribution of water quality and chlorophyll a concentration, and the environmental factors on the variation of phytoplankton biomass were carried out at the 23 stations for four seasons in the Shiahae, southwestern coast of Korean Peninsula from February to October in 1995. I made an analysis on biological factor as chlorophyll a concentration as well as environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity and nutrients; ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate, N/P ratio, silicate and Si/P ratio. The waters in the Shiahae were not stratified due to the tidal mixing and high velocity of tidal current. And the high productivity in photic layer were supported by high nutrients concentration from freshwater on lands and bottom waters The low depth of transparency in the Shiahae had a bad influence upon primary production and marine biology. In Shiahae had a sufficient nutrients for primary production during a year. Especially dissolved inorganic nitrogen and silicate were high, the other side, phosphate was low. The source of nutrients in summer and silicate supply depend on input of freshwater from lands, the other side, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate were depend on rather supplied from bottom layer by the mixing and input of seawater from outside than input of freshwater from lands. Phosphate seemed to become a limiting nutrient for the primary production at all area of Shiahae in winter and at the northern parts in other seasons. However, dissolved inorganic nitrogen seemed to do it at the southern parts in other seasons except winter. Silicate didn't become a limiting nutrient for diatoms in Shiahae. Phytoplankton biomass as measured by chlorophyll a concentration was very high all the year round, it was controlled by the combination of the several environmental factors, especially of nitrogen, phosphorus and the physical factors such as light intensity. • Distributional patterns of benthic microalgae were studied in the tidal flats of Saemangeum lake, Korea, from March 2007 to October 2009. As benthic microalgae of tidal flats of Saemangeum lake, 44 species belong to 5 classes were identified. Diatoms predominated the benthic microalgal flora with 75.0% of total species occurred. Dominant species were Achnanthes lanceolata, Aulacoseira granulata, Cymbella tumida, Fragilaria construens var. ventor, Melosira varians, Navicula cryptocephala, Navicula cryptocephala var. veneta, Nitzschia palea, and Paralia sulcata. The cell density and biomass of benthic microalgae were highest in 2009, and clear tendency of increment was observed at D1 and D2 sites. In vertical profiles, cell density and biomass of the benthic microalgae showed maximum cells and biomass at 0~1 mm depth of sediments from all sampled sites.

  • Effects of substrate types (bedrock and boulder habitat) on the community structures of benthic biota (macroalgae, macrobenthos) were monthly examined at Sinheung in Jeju Island, Korea, from Feb. to Nov. 2015. Species diversity of seaweeds and macrobenthos was greater at bedrock sites with 57 and 102 species than at boulder sites having 42 seaweeds and 67 macrobenthos. Average annual biomass of seaweeds was $1,601.13g\;wet\;wt./m^2$ at bedrock site and $448.85g\;wet\;wt./m^2$ at boulder site. Ecklonia cava was the most dominant species, occupying 62.64% ($1,002.93g/m^2$)of total biomass at bedrock. Amphiroa anceps was the most dominant species and subdominant species was Ecklonia cava, Grateloupia angusta, Peyssonnelia capensis and Meristotheca papulosa at boulder site. Density and biomass of macrobenthos were estimated to be $106.9indivi./m^2$ and $871.93g/m^2$, respectively at bedrock site and they were $64.6indivi./m^2$ and $984.28g/m^2$ at boulder site. The dominant macrobenthos species based on biomass were Turbo comutus (36.40%), Astralium haematragum (19.18%) and Anthocidaria crassispina (13.61%) at bedrock site and they were Alveopora japonica (54.13%) and Psammocora profundacella (24.28%) at boulder site.
