Wintering Avifauna Change Long-term Monitoring in Major Watershed Tributariesin Han River: Fundamental and Phylogenetic Biodiversity Assessment and Comparison (한강 주요 하천의 겨울철 조류상 변화 장기 모니터링: 기존 생물다양성과 계통적 생물다양성 평가 및 비교)

  • Information on biodiversity plays an important role in conservation planning for ecosystem. As existing biodiversity indices are calculated and predicted only based on the number of individuals and species, it is difficult to explain aspects of genetic and ecological diversity. Phylogenetic diversity can indirectly evaluate ecological diversity as well as genetic diversity overlooked by existing biodiversity assessments. In this study, typical metrics of biodiversity (e.g., species diversity, species richness, etc.) and phylogenetic diversity were evaluated together using a long-term monitoring data of winter birds in Jungrang, Cheonggye and Anyang stream where are designated as Seoul migratory bird reserves. Then discussed the meaning of each assessmentresult. In Jungrang and Anyang stream, the number of individuals generally decreased overtime, whereas in Cheonggye stream, there was no significant change. In addition, species abundance increased over time slightly in Cheonggye stream, while there was no significant change in Jungrang and Anyang stream. Species diversity temporally increased in Jungrang and Cheonggye stream, excluding Anyang stream, but phylogenetic diversity showed a tendency to increase only in Cheonggye stream. These changes in the biodiversity assessment indices are thought to be due to anthropogenic disturbances such as construction that occurred within each site, and it was shown that species diversity and phylogenetic diversity do not always lead to the same assessment results. Therefore, this study suggests that biodiversity assessment needs to be considered from various contexts such as genetic and ecological perspectives.

황복을 이용한 연안 지역 생물독성평가 기술 개발

  • 지금까지 국내에서는 해양과 하천, 호소 둥을 포함한 수생환경의 오염을 평가하기 위하여 COD 등 20여 가지의 일반수질항목을 조사하는 이화학적 분석 기술만을 사용하여 왔다 그러나 이러한 이화학적 분석 결과는 중금속이나 유기화합물 등 다양한 유해물질의 생태계에 대한 위해성을 정확하게 반영하는 데에 많은 한계가 있다 이에 따라 선진국에서는 생물을 이용하여 환경내 유해물질의 위해성을 평가할 수 있는 다양한 생물검정법을 개발하여 널리 이용하고 있다. 국내에서도 최근 여러 종류의 생물검정법을 개발하여 오염평가에 이용하고자하는 노력이 있어왔다. 이러한 노력의 일환으로 본 연구진은 다양한 국내산 생물을 이용하여 수생환경내 유해물질의 생물독성 평가기술을 개발하고있다. 본 연구에서는 기수역 어류인 황복의 독성평가 시험생물로서의 적합성을 평가하고 이 생물을 이용한 독성평가기술의 표준화를 위하여 다양한 유해 물질에 농도별로 실험 생물을 노출하는 일련의 급성 독성 평가를 수행하였다.

Analysis of Domestic and Foreign Local Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plan (LBSAP) using Semantic Network Analysis (언어네트워크 분석을 이용한 국내·외 지역생물다양성 전략 분석)

  • The loss of biodiversity has become a global issue. In order to cope with this problem, national biodiversity strategies and action plan (NBSAP) at national level as well as local biodiversity strategies and action plan (LBSAP) at local level have been established in many countries. In this study, we analyzed 8 domestic LBSAPs and 41 foreign LBSAPs through semantic network analysis to investigate the characteristics of domestic and foreign LBSAPs. The results showed that conservation and management were the most used keywords in both domestic and foreign LBSAPs but the ranking of other keywords used in vision, goal, strategy, and action plan sector was different. Thus, it has been found that there is a difference between domestic and foreign practical approaches to conservation and management of biodiversity. Results of the network analysis showed that the domestic network has a more detailed distributed network, while the foreign network has a more comprehensive and integrally configured dense network. These differences may be due to differences of threats to biodiversity, problem recognition, or differences in local circumstances. These results are expected to help establish LBSAP in other region or to assess the local roles to achieve the strategic goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

  • 해양생물다양성 자원에 대한 국가 주권을 인정하는 해양생물다양성협약의 발효로 생물다양성 자원을 확보하기 위한 세계 각국의 경쟁이 치열한 상황이다. 현재 우리나라 각 기관 및 대학들이 보관하고 있는 해양생물자원 정보가 산재되어 있고, DB에 대한 관리 미흡으로 인하여 학술적, 산업적 활용이 어려운 상황임을 인지하여, 통합적으로 관리할 수 있는 정보체계가 필요한 시점이다. 본 논문에서는 해양생물다양성 자원 중 고품질 해양생물자원에 대한 현황을 분석한다. 그리고 해양생물다양성 데이터 고품질 확보 방안을 위한 DB 품질 오류율 산정 기준을 적용하여 메타DB 구축 방안을 제시한다. 본 연구는 향후 해양생물자원에 대한 국가전략수립에 기여할 것으로 기대한다.

Polystyrene Biodegradation Using Zophobas morio

  • The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the weight of Zophobas morio larvae and mass of polystyrene foam when the larvae were fed polystyrene for 27 days. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry was used to determine whether the polystyrene was broken down by the larvae. Forty Z. morio larvae (four replicates with 10 larvae per replicate) were reared in a chamber under controlled conditions with polystyrene foam blocks as their sole diet. The weight of the Z. morio larvae and mass of the polystyrene foam decreased as a function of time. The average weight of the larvae and mass of the polystyrene foam blocks decreased by 16.3 and 6.5%, respectively, over the 27-day period. The FTIR spectrum of Z. morio larvae fed with polystyrene foam did not reveal the unique peaks associated with polystyrene. In conclusion, this study suggests the possibility of using Z. morio larvae as a management technology for degrading waste plastics without a negative environmental effect. An Advanced Methodology of Landscape Character Assessment (진보된 경관특성평가 방법론)

  • 오늘날 지속가능한 발전의 주요 목적으로서 환경의 효과적 보호와 신중한 자연자원의 이용이 강조된다. 이와 같은 목적들을 성취하기 위해서 종합적인 경관 정보가 필수적이다. 한국의 경우, 도시화는 전통적인 농촌 경관 변화, 산림 손실과 단편화 등 많은 환경 문제를 야기했다. 특히 산림이 높은 생물 다양성 가치를 갖고 있는 한국으로서는 산림 손실과 단편화는 생태관점에서 보면 아주 치명적이다. 현재 개인 또는 공공 부분 개발 프로젝트를 위한 환경 영향 평가의 일부분으로 시각 경관 영향 평가가 요구된다. 그러나 이런 시각 경관 영향 평가는 단지 전체 경관의 일부분의 경관 정보만을 제공하고, 특히 현재 경관 평가에서는 경관의 생물 다양성 가치를 평가하지 않는다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 문제점들을 극복하고 한국 상황에 맞는 지속가능한 경관 계획을 위한 필수적인 종합 경관 정보를 제공하기 위해서, 경관 특성과 생물 다양성 가치 평가를 위한 생태 이질성 지수를 결합한 진보된 경관 특성 평가 방법론을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 이 방법론을 통해 경관 특성 평가에서 12가지 경관 특성 유형(type)을 분류하였고 그것의 분포, 경관 특성적 형태, 경관 특성에 부정적인 영향을 줄 수 있는 개발 압력 등을 분석하고 서술하였다. 분석 결과, 주택과 산업 단지 개발, 농지 형질 패턴 변경, 수변 공간 개발 등이 주요 개발 압력으로 나타났다. 경관 생태 이질성 평가 결과에서는 도시근교 지역과 농촌 경관 특성 유형 지역에서 잠재적 생물 다양성 가치가 높았다. 산림 지역 경관 특성 유형에서는 잠재적 생물 다양성 가치가 중간 수치로 나온 반면 도시 경관 특성 유형에서의 잠재적 생물 다양성 가치는 아주 낮았다. 비록 제한된 데이터와 경관 생태 이질성 지수 사용으로 인한 문제점들(스케일 종속적, 변화 패턴이 예측하기 힘든 지수, 자의적인 분류시 다른 결과 발생, 더 종합적인 생물 다양성 잠재력을 평가하기 위해서는 더 많은 다른 경관 생태 지수 필요 등)이 제기되었지만, 이 연구에서 제시된 진보된 경관 특성 평가 방법론을 통해 얻은 종합적인 경관 정보가 지속가능한 경관계획을 할 때 어떻게 잘 활용되어질 수 있는지 예로써 증명하였다. 그 결과 진보된 경관 특성 평가 방법론이 지속가능한 경관 계획을 위한 수단으로 사용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

Changing Methodologies and Reshaping Concepts in Biodiversity Science: A Historical Review of Research on Human Genetic Diversity (생물학 연구 방법론 변화에 따른 생물다양성 개념의 전환: 인간 유전다양성 연구 사례)

  • In order to shed some light on the historical change of biodiversity concepts, this paper reviews the science and technology studies (STS) literature on the history of biological research on human genetic diversity. By doing that, I show how the notion of genetic diversity in the human population - from "race" to "population" to "biogeographical ancestry" - has changed with methodologies and techniques over the last hundred years. In the meantime, I point out contexts and situations, despite conceptual and methodological developments, that show that current human genetic diversity research is slipping into the past mistakes of scientific racism. This article offers biodiversity researchers an opportunity to consider their own scientific practices on classifying species more reflectively.

Management System of Invasive Alien Species Threating Biodiversity in Korea and Suggestions for the Improvement (국내 생물다양성 위협 외래생물의 관리제도 및 개선방향)

  • It has been noted that the main cause of biodiversity loss is influx of alien species. Specifically, habitats destruction, economic loss, and human injury are increasing due to invasive alien species. There were 2,167 alien species in Korea. 21 alien species of extraterrestrials including Lycorma delicatula, Solenopsis invicta, Myocastor coypus, and Spartina alterniflora at high risk through ecological risk assessment, are designated as invasive alien species. Alert species, which may have negative impact on ecosystems when they are introduced into the country, are assigned to 127 species through the ecosystem risk evaluation. To list such alien species to prevent invasion of alien species in advance, and to minimize damage caused by imported alien species, a national level management system called the Conservation and Use of Biological deversity Act was established, but there is a lack of a systematic management system in accordance with degree of risk. There is also a risk assessment chart should be developed thatreflects ecological characteristics of each taxon and evaluation criteria in predicting the risk.

Vulpia octoflora (Walter) Rydb. (Poaceae), a New Invasive Alien Plant in Korea (미기록 침입외래식물: 좀들묵새(벼과))

  • Vulpia octoflora (Walter) Rydb., a newly identified invasive alien species, was found in Gangcheon-ri, Yeoju-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. It is native to North America and has been reported to be an invasive alien plant in Japan, Australia, and Ukraine. Vulpia octoflora is a weed that grows mainly in dry sandy or rocky soil and is frequently found along the roadside in open areas or in artificially disturbed sites. This species is similar to the recently confirmed alert alien species, V. bromoides (L.) Gray, but is readily distinguishable due to more florets per spikelet and a short awn of the lemma. A detailed species description, the geographical distribution, illustrations, photographs, and an identification key for all species of Vulpia that occur in Korea are provided.

Relationship between Aboveground Biomass and Measures of Structure and Species Diversity in Quercus mongolica-Dominated Forest, Mt. Jeombong (점봉산 신갈나무군락의 생물종 다양성, 구조 다양성과 지상부 생물량의 관계에 대한 연구)

  • Relationships of standing biomass with biodiversity and structural diversity were examined in the Quercus mongolica-dominated forest in Mt. Jeombong, Gangwon-do. We examined the standing biomass of the Q. mongolia community ($311.1ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$) from 2004 to 2013, and the observed major species were Q. mongoilca, Carpinus cordata, Tilia amurensis whose standing biomasses were $206.3ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ (66.3%), $36.9ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ (11.9%), and $30.6ton{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ (9.8%), respectively. Although the number of Q. mongolica individuals was very small compared with total density, the reason that Q. mongolica showed the most biomass than other species is due to greater average diameter at breast height (DBH) and the higher number of $DBH{\geq}50cm$ individuals. We calculated the range of Shannon index (H') and Shannon evenness (J') in the Q. mongolica community, and they were gradually increased in time, showing 2.015~2.166, 0.673~0.736, respectively. Their H' and J' showed positive linear relationships with their standing biomass. This indicates that the spatial distribution of the standing biomass in Q. mongoilca community becomes more homogeneous with time and this homogenization appears in various species in the community. In addition, we estimated biomass-species index (BS) and abundance-biomass-speciesdiversity (ABS) and they also showed gradual increase in time, ranging from 3.746 to 3.811 and from 4.781 to 5.028, respectively. Their indices showed positive linear relationships with the standing biomass. This can be explained from the observations of variations in standing biomass with tree diameters as the differences in the average standing biomass in the community have reduced gradually in time. Moreover, it is expected that increase in the structure diversity of the Q. mongoilca community enhances the efficiency in carbon sequestration and productivity, so the community can be developed to a more sustainable ecosystem with more abundant resources. Thus, applications of uneven-aged plantations with considerations of local ecological properties can be a very efficient reforestation method to ensure stable support of biodiversity and productivity.
