  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of SCB (Slurry Composting & Biofiltration) liquid fertilizer on seed germination properties and physiological activities of P. densiflora and M. amurensis seedling on the sand and tailing soil. Seed germination of two, tree species on the sand and tailing soil was delayed and inhibited under SCB treatment. Seedling growth of two species was also reduced by SCB application, and the growth reduction was associated with its concentration. Chlorophyll content decreased in the leaves of SCB-treated P. densiflora but increased in the leaves of SCB-treated M. amurensis when compared to control seedlings irrigated with tap water. On the other hand, Malondialdehyde (MDA) content, an indicator of lipid peroxidation, decreased in the leaves of SCB-treated P. densiflora, whereas it increased in the leaves of SCB-treated M. amurensis. Antioxidative enzyme activities in the leaves of P. densiflora increased on sand soil treated with 1/6 diluted SCB solution and on tailing soil treated with 1/3 diluted one, whereas those of M. amurensis seedlings increased only on tailing soil applied with the normal SCB solution and the 1/3 diluted SCB solution, respectively. These results were considered as side-effects of SCB liquid fertilizer which might accumulate salt through the physical changes in the soil.c

더욱이, 조선의 ${\ulcorner}$구성교육${\lrcorner}$이 조선총독부의 관리하에서 실행되었다는 것을, 당시의 사범학교를 중심으로 한 교육조직을 기술한 문헌에 의해 규명시켰다.nd of letter design which represents -natural objects and was popular at the time of Yukjo Dynasty, and there are some documents of that period left both in Japan and Korea. • Roasting process of grains modifies their physicochemical characteristics that affect flavor, color, taste, and textures, as well as composition of bioactive compounds. We roasted oats at different temperatures (150, 200, and $250^{\circ}C$) and for different time periods (15 and 30 min). The polyphenol and flavonoid contents in different solvent extracts (methanol, fermented ethanol, and water) were also investigated. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were highest in the methanolic extract (135 mg gallic acid equivalent/g and 29 mg catechin equivalent/g, respectively, at $250^{\circ}C/30min$ roasting) and increased with roasting time and temperature. In addition, the avenanthramides were most abundant as accessed ($266{\mu}g/g$) in the methanolic extract upon roasting at $200^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. The radical scavenging activities, using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid scavenging, increased with roasting temperature and time. The roasting process may modify the physicochemical structure of oats, thereby, improving polyphenol extraction and antioxidant activity. The results of this study could be used for the manufacture of foods using roasted oats.

  • Effects of 1-MCP(1-methylcyclopropene) on the postharvest life and fruit quality of cucumber 'Baekdadaki' were investigated. Cucumber were held at room and cold chamber($10^{\circ}C$) treated with several concentrations of 1-MCP. Physico-chemical characteristics such as fresh weight and firmness were greatly varied during storage, and the treatment with I-MCP(500ppb) showed the minimal loss of the values at harvest. The peel b value representing a senescence process was higher investigated in 1-MCP(250 and 1,000ppb treatment, and led to the apparent yellowing and softening after cold storage for 15 days. 1-MCP(500ppb) showed lower decay rate and better marketability of cucumber than other treatments after cold storage for 15 days. The respiration rate was higher found in cucumber treated with 1-MCP(250ppb) than in other treatment. Ethylene evolution was most detected in cucumber treated with 1-MCP(1000ppb) after room storage for 6 days. 1-MCP did not affect the production of ethylene in cucumber during room and cold storage.

  • In this study, extracts of chlorella using different extraction methods were compared for antioxidant activities and spray-dried chlorella powders were investigated for their physicochemical characteristics. The DPPH radical scavenging activity and superoxide radical scavenging activity of 50% ethanol extract were 29.19%, and 48.91%, respectively. The oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of the 50% ethanol extract ($150.44{\mu}M/g$) was higher than those of other extracts. The total chlorophyll content of the 50% ethanol extract (542.89 mg/100 g) was higher than those of other extracts. The microencapsulation of the 50% ethanol extract was manufactured by spray-drying with 10 % maltodextrin (SD-C10), 20% maltodextrin (SD-C20), and 30% maltodextrin (SD-C30). The particle size of the freeze-dried powder ($454.47{\mu}m$) was higher than those of the spray-dried powders ($24.15{\sim}32.49{\mu}m$). Scanning electron microscope images showed that the spray-dried chlorella powders using SD-C10, SD-C20, and SD-C30 had an uniform particle distribution. The water absorption index and water solubility index (WSI) of powders were 0.31~0.45, and 96.96~98.28%, respectively. The spray-dried powders showed the stability in total chlorophyll content for 40 days storage. Based on these results, spray-dried chlorella powders could be used in various types of food processes.

  • Purpose: The hydrogel lenses have been functionalized with HA(Hyaluronic Acid) using two different methods: construction of an IPN(Interpenetrating Polymer Networks) and formation of CCB(Chemical Covalent Bonding). The lysozyme adsorption and physical properties such as optical transmittance and water content of the hydrogel lenses have been investigated in order to determine whether method is suitable for the application potentials in contact lens industry. Methods: HA have been added to the hydrogel lenses prepared in the Lab using the two different method, e.g. IPN and CCB. The optical transmittance was measured in the wavelength range of 300~800 nm. The water content was measured by the gravimetric method using 0.9% NaCl saline solution. The amounts of adsorbed lysozyme on the contact lenses was analyzed by HPLC after incubation for 12h in artificial tears. Results: The water content of the HA added hydrogel contact lenses was increased, and the lens made by IPN method showed higher water content than the lens made by CCB method. The optical transmittance was over 90% both before and after addition of HA. Comparing the lysozyme adsorption reduction ratio, contact lens manufactured by IPN method was 60.0%, and the lens made by CCB method was 40.4%. Conclusions: CCB method is appropriate to distribute the functional material evenly throughout the lens, whereas IPN method is effective for the case of giving the functionality on the lens surface without phase separation.

  • Nuclear Medicine Images have comparatively poor spatial resolution, making it difficult to relate the functional information which they contain to precise anatomical structures. Anatomical structures useful in the interpretation of SPECT /PET Images were radiolabelled. PET/SPECT Images Provide functional information, whereas MRI mainly demonstrate morphology and anatomical. Fusion or Image Registration improves the information obtained by correlating images from various modalities. Brain Scan were studied on one or more occations using MRI and SPECT. The data were aligned using a point pair methods and surface matching. SPECT and MR Images was tested using a three dimensional water fillable Hoffman Brain Phantom with small marker and PET and MR Image was tested using a patient data. Registration of SPECT and MR Images is feasible and allows more accurate anatomic assessment of sites of abnormal uptake in radiolabeled studies. Point based registration was accurate and easily implemented three dimensional registration of multimodality data set for fusion of clinical anatomic and functional imaging modalities. Accuracy of a surface matching algorithm and homologous feature pair matching for three dimensional image registration of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Images(MRD was tested using a three dimensional water fill able brain phantom and Patients data. Transformation parameter for translation and scaling were determined by homologous feature point pair to match each SPECT and PET scan with MR images.

  • Four well-characterized soils collected from A- and B-horizon in the Department of Energy Oak Ridge Reservation in USA, mainly distributed with Inceptisol(Inc) and Ultisol(Ult) soils, were used in this work. The bioaccessibility of arsenic as well as oxidation phenomena of As(III) was investigated with soils spiked with As(III) and As(V) using a physiologically based extraction test(PBET) at pH 1.5 and 1:100 soil to solution ratio. Also effect of aging time on the bioaccessibility of arsenic was investigated over the 6 months. After 48 hours(fresh) contacting As(V) solution with soils, all soils rapidly and strongly sequestrated As(V), especially Ult-B. However, little sequestration was observed after 3-months. When As(III) was spiked on the same soils, a great portion of As(III) was oxidized to As(V) after 48 hrs, especially Inc-A and Ult-A soils, which is strongly related with Mn content in soils. By using As(III)-spiked soils, much reduced bioaccessibility as total arsenic was observed from Inc-B and Ult-B soils over the 6 months aging time compared to that from Inc-A and Ult-A soils. This result can be explained by the continuous sequestration of As(V), produced from oxidation of As(III), onto Inc-B and Ult-B soils having much amount of iron. The trend of As(III) sequestration over six months aging time was quite similar with that of As(V) sequestration.

  • Purpose : Many believe that the Sasang mentioned in the I Ching and the Sasang of Sasang Medicine (as expounded by Dr. Lee Je-ma in the book Longevity and Life Preservation in Oriental Medicine) refer to different concepts. This is untrue. In order to understand the thought patterns of Dr. Lee Je-ma and his book, it is necessary to first understand the concepts of the I Ching. The I Ching was the most respected text in Dr. Lee Je-ma time, and served as the foundation upon which his medicine stood. The purpose of this research is to understand the concept of Sasang in the I Ching and how it applies to the Sasang medicine. Method : The authors first defined the term Sasang according to the theory of I Ching. It was then discussed in relation to theories of modern science. Inferences were made as to how Sasang corresponds to the terminologies and concepts of modern science. The characteristics of Sasang interpreted through modern science were then applied to the physiology, pathology and pharmacology of Sasang Medicine. Results and Conclusion : 1. The Sasang theory of the I Ching organizes seemingly random and isolated natural phenomena into four distinct groups according to various attributes. The particular characteristics representing each of these four categories are known as Sasang. 2. The Sasang theory of I Ching has a strong correlation to the Theory of Relativity and the Theory of Complementarity, as well as the Digital and Fractal Theories. 3. By applying the Sasang Theory to various fields, the seemingly unrelated principles of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine can be seen as parts of a whole. 4. Sasang Medicine categorizes human morphology, physiology and pharmacology into four categories according to the characteristics defined by the Sasang Theory of the I Ching. 5. Grouping new discoveries of modern physics, chemistry, biology and medicine according to the Sasang Theory will bring to light the intricacies of the Sasang Theory while facilitating the incorporation of modern science into Sasang Medicine.

  • The Physical and sensory characteristics of muffins prepared with flavonoids such as ferulic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were evaluated for the development of functional foods using these flavonoids. The solubilities of ferulic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were over 1% in water and the solutions showed a good thermal stability. However, 1% ferulic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid solution showed a color change during heating. The volume and maximum height of the control muffin were the greatest among the muffin groups. The volume of the muffins decreased with the increase of flavonoid concentration. The volumes of muffins with p-hydroxybenzoic acid were smaller than those of muffins with ferulic acid. The L, a and b values on crust and crumb of the muffin groups were not significantly different. The chemical flavor, bitterness and after taste of the muffins prepared with ferulic acid were stronger than those of the control muffins. Savory flavor and sweetness of the muffins with ferulic acid were weaker than those of the control muffins. The muffins with p-hydroxybenzoic acid were not significantly different from the control muffins in the appearance, flavor, taste, texture and overall acceptability. These results demonstrated that p-hydroxybenzoic acid may be useful as an additive to muffin.
