  • Behaviors of simple organic compound and granular sludge in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating propionate at high ammonia nitrogen levels were investigated for 12 months. The UASB reactor achieved about 80% removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) at ammonia nitrogen concentration up to 6000 mg-N/L. At higher concentration of ammonia nitrogen, the propionate in the effluent increased whereas the acetate was very low. At ammonia nitrogen concentration of 8000 mg-N/L, the volatile suspended solids (VSS) increased sharply due probably to the decrease of the content of extracellular polymer (ECP) although methane production was very low. The specific methanogenic activity (SMA) using formate, acetate, and propionate as substrate to granules decreased as ammonia nitrogen concentration increased. The ammonia nitrogen concentration $I^{50}$, causing 50% inhibition of SMA were 2666, 4778 and 5572 mg-N/L, respectively. The kinetic coefficients of ammonia inhibition using formate, acetate, and propionate as substrate were 3.279, 0.999 and 0.609, respectively. The SMA using formate was severely affected by ammonia nitrogen than those using acetate and propionate. This result indicated that the hydrogenotrophic methanogens was most affected by ammonia nitrogen. Granules were mainly composed of microcolonies of methanothrix-like bacteria resembling bamboo-shape, and several other microcolonies including propionate degrader with juxtapositioned syntrophic associations between the hydrogen-producing acetogens and hydrogen-consuming methanogens.

  • In order to develop the design and operational criteria in sewage treatment by indirect aerating submerged biofilter, experimental investigations were performed for the reasonable oxygen supply and effecting factors of treatment efficiency. The experiments were executed for the up-flowing synthetic wastewater and aerated water in the submerged biofilter at $20^{\circ}C$. The obtained results are as follows: 1) Appropriate mean diameter of gravels was about 11mm. 2) $BOD_5$ loading rate based on biofilter volume was more reasonable than that on surface area of gravel for operational criteria. 3) To remove the influent $BOD_5$ more than 90%, $BOD_5$ loading rate must be less than $1.0kg-BOD_5/m^3{\cdot}d$ and circulating flowrate must be more than $189m^3/m^3{\cdot}d$. 4) Reaction rate coefficient $K_1$ is related to diameter of gravel and circulating flow rate based on biofilter volume.

  • Two-phase flow is frequently observed in many industries such as nuclear power plants and oil transportation. Two-phase flow regime depends on the flow rates, the fluid properties and the structure of flow channels. Since the identification of the flow regime is of great importance in the system design and the safety analysis, a number of theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed. This paper presents a basic research on the characteristics of each flow regime and transition boundary in the two-phase flows. The flow regime of the upward air-water flow in the vertical tube, 30 mm in the inner diameter, is distinguished by using the high-speed camera and the Wire-mesh sensor(WMS). The identified experimental data are compared with the flow regime maps proposed by Taitel et al, Mishima and Ishii. Even though there is slight difference in the transition boundary, the experimental data show general agreement with these flow regime maps.

  • The global cement industry emits approximately 2.9 billion tons of greenhouse gases, of which 1.74-1.89 billion tons are emitted from limestone, which is the main raw material for clinkers. Therefore, the feasibility of using slag, a non-carbonated CaO-based raw material, must be investigated, and the physical properties of cement must be considered. In this study, the mixing ratios of the raw mix and properties of cement were analyzed. The CaCO3 replacement ratio was limited when one type of slag was used; however, when the mixed slag was utilized, the CaCO3 replacement ratio increased by more than 12 %. The compressive strength of the slag-incorporated cement was lower than that of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Therefore, the lime saturation factor (LSF) of the raw mix and fineness of the cement were increased to improve the compressive strength. The compressive strength of cement with improved fineness was similar to that of OPC for a CaCO3 replacement ratio of up to 6 %, and it decreased as the CaCO3 replacement ratio was increased to 9 %. When both fineness and LSF were increased, the compressive strength and flow value of the cement with a CaCO3 replacement ratio of 12 % were similar to that of OPC.

  • This paper deals with the flow characteristics of air-water two-phase flow in a vertical tube of 10mm I.D. and 600mm in length at an adiabatic condition. The obtained experimental data were covered with the liquid superficial velocity ranging from 0.095m/s to 2.56m/s. and the gas superficial velocity ranging from 0.032m/s to 21.08m/s. The effects of the gas and liquid superficial velocity on the flow pattern transitions, frictional pressure drop, and film thickness and gas-liquid interface roughness were also examined. It was found that the film thickness increased and the liquid film wave length was more longer with the liquid superficial velocity $j_L$ increasing at $j_G$ constant. It was also showed that the frictional pressure drops were experienced in three regions. namely increasing region(bubbly flow), decreasing region (Taylor bubble and slug flows) and re-increasing region (annular flow).

  • The optimum mold design and the optimum process condition were constructed upon executing process simulation of rubber injection molding with the commercial CAE program of MOLDFLOW(Ver. 5.2) in order to solve the process-problems of K company relating to air-traps and short-shots. The former occurs at the cavity edge of torque-rod-bush and the latter takes place for the injection molding of dynamic dampers. As a result the process problem relating to air traps was solved by optimizing edge-angle and the number of gates to prevent the flow congestion of flow-front and to make the flow-front movement unaffected by congestion. For dynamic dampers of K company the unmolded flaw caused by their unfilled cavity was corrected by installing the air-vent at the confronting locations of both upstream and downstream of flow-front where air traps frequently occur. Besides the unmolded flaws were rectified by altering the position of gate from the upper to the middle or by increasing the number of gates. Thus the process problems of K company relating to air-traps and short-shots of torque-rod-bush and dynamic dampers, respectively, were solved by proper altering of mold design with process simulation of rubber injection molding.

  • This paper presents a turbulence modeling of the open-channel flows over smooth-rough bed strips. A Reynolds stress model is used for the turbulence closure. The simulated mean flow and turbulence structures are compared with the previously reported experimental data. Comparisons reveal that the developed Reynolds stress model successfully predicts the mean flow and turbulence structures of open-channel flows over smooth-rough bed strips. The computed flow vectors show cellular secondary currents, of which the upflow occurs over the smooth bed strip and the downflow over the rough bed strip. It is found that the cellular secondary currents affect the mean flow and turbulence structure. A budget analysis of the streamwise vorticity equation is also carried out to investigate the mechanism by which the secondary currents are generated.

  • This study induced biological denitrification and nitrification via a biofiltration process with the view of removing nitrogen from land-based fish farm effluent. To achieve this, we operated an aquaculture nitrogen-removal system that includes a denitrification and nitrification reactor [working volume 40 L, flow rate 64.8 L, HRT (hydraulic retention time) 14.8 h, HRT considering recycling of NOx 7.4 h]. In the continuous process, the nitrification rate of ammonium nitrogen exceeded 90% at a steady state and the denitrification efficiency exceeded 80% with recycling to a pre-anoxic reactor. In addition, the pH in the final effluent was lower with a low influent water alkalinity averaging 100 mg/L (as $CaCO_3$). For effective denitrification reactions, carbon must be supplied via particulate organic matter (POM) hydrolysis because of the low C/N (carbon/nitrogen) ratio in the water.
