Ecological characteristics of the Firefly, Luciole lateralis (애반딧불이(Luciola lateralis)의 생태학적 특성)

  • The Luciola lateralis larva took 5.3 days from climbing on the land to the pupal cocoon formation. It took 6.6 days for a larva to eventually transform to a pupa after building a pupal cocoon. The size of pupal cocoon was 10.1 mm in length, 4.7 mm in width and its wall thickness was 1.3 mm. The mean pupal period was 10.5 days. The adult stayed 6.8 days in the pupal cocoon before escaping the cocoon. The peak adult emergence appeared around 9 p.m., and decreased after 10 p.m. The optimal soil temperature for emergence was $23.4^{\circ}C$. The female adult of the natural population (Nat-type) lived shorter, laid fewer eggs, and the oviposition frequency was fewer than that of the Lab-type individuals. However, a few individuals from the natural population laid 200-400 eggs. The less number of oviposition in the natural population may be due to the fact that the female adults might lay eggs before the collection for the experiment.

  • This study examined the effect of the Antarctic Oscillation (AAO) in June on the June rainfall in Korea by using a correlational statistical analysis. Results showed that there is a highly positive correlation between the two variables. In other words, the June rainfall in Korea is influenced by the Mascarene High and Australian High that are strengthened in the Southern Hemisphere, which is a typical positive AAO pattern. When these two anomalous pressure systems strengthen, the cold cross-equatorial flows in the direction from the region around Australia to the equator are intensified, which in turn, force a western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) to develop northward. This pressure development eventually drives the rain belt to head north. As a result, the Changma begins early in the positive AAO phase and the June rainfall increases in Korea. In addition, a WNPSH that develops more northward increases the landfall (or affecting) frequency of tropical cyclones in Korea, which plays an important role in increasing the June rainfall.

  • The purpose of this study is to know how to utilize foreigners such as Weltevree and Hamel who visited Korea in the pre-modern period, during history class. Both Weltevree and Hamel were Dutch men, and the first person who visited the Joseon Dynasty was Weltevree. He was a sailor of the Dutch East India Company, landed on Jeju Island in 1627, and since then, he did not return to his country. He played a major role in the execution of weapons. Hammel, the merchant catcher of the Dutch East India Company, traveled to Joseon in 1653 and contacted several kinds of people in various parts of the country for 13 years, and was able to survey the scenery and customs of Joseon. It can be difficult for students to understand the overall trends of the world history and the views of the East and the West because students learn from Western history, East Asian history, and Korean history, separately. Learning characteristics associated with East-West exchanges will enable students to understand the Western and Eastern history of the West, and understand the history of the world.

Applicability of Coupled Tide-Surge Model (조석-해일 결합모형의 적용성 검토)

  • Applicability of the MIKE21 model as a real time coupled tide-surge model is examined prior to the application as an inundation model. Though the model domain contains the whole southern coasts of Korean Peninsula, the results of tide simulations show good agreement with the observed values. Moreover, the coupled tide-surge model simulates water levels well, especially near the sites which typhoon MAEMI(0314) struck, such as at Tongyung, Masan and Pusan. In addition, it is confirmed that the interaction between storm surge and tide is notable where the water depth is small and the tidal range is large, which indicates the necessity of coupled model especially at the southwestern coast.

  • In order to simulate storm surge for the west coast, complex physics of asymmetrical typhoon wind vortex, tide and wave are simultaneously incorporated on a fine finite element mesh extended to the North Western Pacific sea. Asymmetrical vortex based on maximum wind radii for each quadrant by JTWC's best tracks are input in pADCIRC and wave stress is accounted by dynamic coupling with unSWAN. Computations performed on parallel clusters. In hindcasting simulation of typhoon Kompasu(1007), model results of wave characteristic are very close with the observed data at Ieo island, and sea surface records at major tidal stations are reproduced with satisfaction when typhoon is approaching to the coast. It is obvious that increasing of local storm surges can be found by introducing asymmetrical vortex. Thus this approach can be satisfactorily applied in coastal hazard management against to storm surge inundation on low level area and major harbor facilities.

청주의 제조와 판매현황

  • 오늘날의 청주(淸酒)는 SAKE라는 이름으로 일본(日本)을 대표(代表)하는 술로 여겨지고 있으나 사실 일본식(日本式) 청주(淸酒)의 제법(製法)도 결국(結局)은 우리나라에 그 근원을 두고 있다. 오늘날의 청주(淸酒)는 우리의 술 빚는 법이 일본(日本)으로 전래된 후, 일본(日本)에서 잘 다듬어져 다시 우리나라에 상륙(上陸)한 것으로 現在의 청주(淸酒)의 근본도 그 뿌리는 백제를 비롯한 우리나라에 있음은 주지할 만한 사실이다. 그러나 우리 고유의 술빚는 법이 체계적으로 정리되지 못하고 사라져 버린데에는 우리의 전통사상의 일부인 과학, 기술 노동을 천시하는 풍조와 술빚는 일을 특히 여성의 전유물로 여겨 양조법의 정립이 이루어지지 못한 것도 큰 이유라 하겠다. 자가용(自家用)으로만 사용되던 주조(酒造)에서 탈피하여 공업적(工業的)인 규모의 청주생산은 1883년 1월 후꾸다라는 일본인이 부산에 세운 공장을 시초로, 1917년 현 백화양조의 전신이라 할 수 있는 조선주조주식회사 설립으로 본격화되었다. 우리의 전통청주(약주)는 곡류와 누룩을 이용하여 빚는데, 누룩은 밀기울을 잘 다져서 장기간에 걸쳐 제조하며, 누룩에는 당화효소를 분비하는 곰팡이류와 알콜발효를 할 수 있는 효모류가 함께 부착되어 있다. 따라서 호화시킨 곡류와 누룩을 함께 넣어서 술을 빚게되면 당화와 발효가 동시에 일어나게 된다. 일본식 청주도 Koji라 불리는 국(麴)을 제조하는 것을 달리할 뿐 우리 전통청주와 제법의 맥락은 같다. Koji는 찐쌀에 곰팡이류를 인위적으로 접종하여 배양한 것으로, 결국 당과용 효소를 얻는다는 것은 누룩과 같은 원리이나 곰팡이균을 분리하여 접종하는 것이 다르다. 한국의 청주판매 현황을 보면 80년대 초반 급격한 감소추세를 보였으나, 업계가 적극적인 판촉활동을 벌임과 동시에 새로운 TYPE의 냉청주(冷淸酒)를 개발하여 여름철이 비수기였던 시장 상황을 완전히 깨뜨려 사계절의 주류로 만드므로서 뚜렷한 회복, 증가추세로 바꾸었다. 앞으로 좀더 잘 다듬어지고 현대 이미지에 맞는 청주가 지속적으로 등장하여야 하며, 결국 이러한 민족고유의 맛이 가미된 청주 TYPE의 주류가 우리나라를 대표하는 국주로까지 발전할 수 있으리라 확신한다.

Toxicity Assessment of Phytolaccae Radix Aqueous Extract Orally Administered to F344 Rats for Two Consecutive Weeks (상륙 추출물의 F344 랫드에서 2주 반복 경구투여 독성평가)

  • Phytolaccae Radix has long been used as a traditional indigenous medicine to cure edema and rheumatism. However, there is insufficient background information on toxicological evaluation of Phytolaccae Radix extract to support the safe use. Therefore, we conducted a series of standardized, OECD and KFDA guidelines compliant in vivo study, to find a dose levels for the 13 weeks toxicity study. The extract of Phytolaccae Radix was administered orally to F344 rats at dose levels of 0, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks. Each group was composed to five male and five female rats. In the result, there were no test article-related adverse changes in clinical signs, body weight, food consumption, ophthalmology, hematology, clinical chemistry, gross finding at necropsy and organ weight examination. Therefore, we recommend that 2000 mg/kg/day is a highest treatment group in 13-week exposure study.

  • Super typhoons develop as a result of meteorological changes. In 2012, Typhoons Bolaven and Denba reached Korea. The maximum instantaneous wind speed of the typhoons reached 60 m/sec. Harbor structures including sofa block sustained damage and loss by the abnormally high waves. In Korea, tetrapod blocks were installed the most for wave dissipating. Nevertheless, a structural evaluation of the tetrapod block has not been performed. This study examined the structural mechanism and weakness part of the tetrapod block under a range of boundary conditions. The block has weakness against a tensile force because it is plain concrete. The joint part of the legs is the most vulnerable to tensile stress. The weakest part can be reduced if the joint part is reinforced as a hunch.

Near Real-time Immediate Forecasting of Storm Surge Based on Typhoon Advisories (태풍 예경보에 근거한 폭풍해일 준실시간 즉각 예보)

  • A primary study on the rapid modeling of storm surge, which is one of typical coastal disasters, for immediate forecasting in conjunction with typhoon advisories is done and tested for the typhoons Bolaven, Tembin and Sanba which attacked to Korean Peninsula on August and September in this year 2012. Semi automatic rapid computations according to JTWC typhoon advisories were performed and uploaded to the web by models SLOSH in PC and ADCIRC in parallel clusters with 64 cores having 57k nodes encompassing the North-Western Pacific region. It only takes 1 and 2 hours from taking advisory to web uploading, respectively. By comparison with observed water surface elevations for the major tidal stations after Bolaven attack it shows within RMS error of 0.17~0.19 m for surge heights and only deviates 1 hour of peak surge time in ADCIRC model. Thus it is concluded that this approach provides a frame of near real-time immediate forecasting of storm surges with satisfactions.

  • The total precipitable water fields derived from HIRS(High Resolution Infrared Radiometer Sounder)and MSU(Microwave Sounding Unit) measurements of TOVS and brightness temperature of SSM/I were used to investigate the evolution of moisture fields for the Typhoon WALT(9407) which after landing in Japan it became tropical depression in Korea-Japan Strait, and FAYE(9503) which was the first tropical storm of 1995 to became a typhoon, respectively. The total precipitable water derived from TOVS observations is delineated according to the evolutions of WALT and FAYE movements because total precipitable water fields of TY WALT(9407) and FAYE9\(9503) were largely controlled by horizontal transport of water vapor over the Northwest Pacific Ocean which dominantly plays an important role in maintaining and accelerating their intensities toward Korea and Japan . These fields demonstrated that two major bands, which imply the rain bands, were locally well-organized and similar to the thick convective cloud features over Japan and the Korean peninsula while WALT and FAYE were approaching away and to. But the values of derived TOVS total precipitable water have shown the underestimate of those of SSM/I total comparatively for two typhoons.
