Protective Effect of Saengshik Supplementation on Lead Induced Toxicity in Rats (생식의 섭취가 납중독 흰쥐의 피해 경감에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Lead is a ubiquitous environmental and industrial pollutant that causes a major health concerns. It is known to induce a broad range of physiological, biochemical, and behavioral dysfunctions in laboratory and humans, including hematopoietic system, kidneys, liver, and reproductive system. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Saengshik supplementation on the lead-induced toxicity in rats. Five week old male Sprague­Dawley rats were randomly assigned to five groups for six weeks as followings: control group (CT), lead acetate treated group (PT), and lead acetate groups administered with three different dosages of Saengshik $(SI2.5-12.5\%,\;S25-25\%,\;and\;S50-50\%).$ Lead acetate (12 mg/rat) was intragastrically administered daily for 6 weeks. The results were summarized as follows; Weight gain and food efficiency ratio were significantly lower (p<0.05) in lead administered group compared with those of the control group. Also, significant lead-induced alteration in blood hemoglobin (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and reticulocyte distribution width (RDW) were observed. In the liver of lead-exposed animals, there was an increase in the lipid peroxidation (MDA) and the level of glutathione (GSH), but superoxiede dismutase (SOD) activity did not change. Lead-exposed animals with $25\%\;and\;50\%$ Saengshik supplementation showed marked improvements in the values of MCH, MCV, and RDW. Also, the level of HCT was significantly increased by $50\%$ Saengshik supplementation. The levels of liver MDA in $12.5\%\;and\;50\%$ Saengshik administered groups and GSH level in $50\%$ Saengshik administered group were significantly decreased compared to the lead administered group. Also, hepatic SOD activity tended to increase in the presence of Saengshik supplementation. Furthermore, the accumulation of lead in liver and kidney was reduced by presence of Saneghshik supplementation. Liver lead concentration was significantly reduced by both $25\%\;and\;50\%$ Saengshik supplementations and kidney lead concentration was significantly reduced by the $25\%$ Saengshik supplementation. These results show that Saengshik may have a protective effect against lead intoxication but the mechanism of their effects remains unclear.

The Characteristics of Heavy Metal Contamination in Tailings and Soils in the Vicinity of the Palbong Mine, Korea (팔봉광산 선광광미와 주변토양의 중금속 오염 특성)

  • The characteristics of the heavy metal contamination in the soils affected by the tailings of the Palbong mine have been studied. The soils in the studied area consist mostly of loam by the particle size analysis, but a little of it, located near the stream, consist of loamy sand to sandy loam, finally to loam downward. The organic contents of soils are significantly low aoom 2 percent and the pH is in acidic ranging 6.0 $\pm$ 0.1. The samples of the parent rocks, the normal soils, the tailings and the channel deposits from the studied area were chemically analysed. From the result, the heavy metal concenlration of the soils is a little Jow compared with that of the parent rocks, shows the hydrologic process of the surface and the groundwater. The contamination of the tailings from the ore mining are high in lead, copper and arsenic. In the channel deposits the concenlrations of lead and copper are abnormally high but that of arsenic is uniquely low. And most of heavy metal contamination are decreased with the distance from the mine. It is caused by the properties of the surface and the ground water during the process of the heavy metal migration. The correlation-coefficient between sand and silt contents and the concentrations of Cd, Cu and Pb are significant but the amounts of As and Hg are increased with the clay contents. The dispersion of the heavy metals with the distance shows that the concentrations of them in the soils sampled at distance of 100 m to 200 m along the stream started near the Palbong mine are extremely high compared with those from other distances. These discrepancies are significant in Cd, Cu, Pb and Hg, but low in As. All the samples contain below detection limit of Cr+6 In the present stream water the concentrations of the heavy metals are not detected. So, it is interpreted that the concentrations in the soils are caused by the activities of the mining during the operation and have been continued by the dispersion from the tailings since after the closure of the mining, especially by the surface and ground water. The concentrations are diminished with the distance from the mining site, but in the interval of 800-2000 m increases abruptly. In the soil samples counted on the dispersion direction by wind, the lowering of the concentration is relatively uniform with the distance from the mining site. So, the rapid increase of the heavy metal concentrations is presumed to have been caused by the ground-water movement. In the migration of the heavy metals, the groundwater conditions, such as pH, Eh, the contents of colloidal particles, and Mn and Fe oxides are closely involveo. Integrating with these factors, it is interpreted that the groundwater conditions which have caused the heavy metal contamination of the studied area are those that the pH is about 3 in oxidized conditions, the contents of the colloidal particles are low, and Mn and Fe oxides are not involved in the migration of the heavy metals. Meanwhile, the vegetables growing on the soils in the studied area are not affected by the contamination of the heavy metals.

  • The effect of Mn(II) concentration on the anodic reactions occurring on a Pb-Ag electrode in sulfuric acid solutions has been studied by potentiostatic oxidation in the potential range of 1.8 to 2.0 V. High oxidation potentials and low initial concentrations of Mn(II) resulted in higher concentrations of soluble Mn(III) ions which were obtained from spectrophotometric analysis of the solution after oxidation. $MnO_2$ was deposited on the electrode by electrochemical oxidation of Mn(II) at 1.8 and 1.9 V, while it was formed by disproportionation of Mn(III) at 2.0 V. No $PbO_2$ was formed in the presence of Mn(II) during potentiostatic oxidation treatment for two hours at 1.8 V. Chemical reduction of $PbO_2$ with Mn(II) led to a decrease in the amount of $PbO_2$ as Mn(II) concentration increased at 1.9 and 2.0 V.

  • In the electrolytic preparation of persulphate from sulphate solution, the current efficiency decrease with temperature increase at the platinum anode. But in case of electrodeposited lead peroxide anode, the current efficiency increase with temperature of the solution. The reason seems to be that the ozone formation is faster in platinum anode than in lead peroxide as temperature increase.

The Specficity of Phase Transitions of Lead Monoxide (산화납의 특이상전이)

  • Lead monoxide has two phases at room temperature. One is a yellow orthorhombic phase, the other is a redtetragonal phase. Sometimes two phases are hybrided. The specificity of phase transitions of lead oxide is found during the milling of the batch including lead oxide. The pure orthorhombic phase of PbO can be transformed to the tetragonal phase perfectly by wet ball milling (milling liquid is distilled water) without thermal energy. However, when ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and aceton are used as milling liquid, respectively, the hybrid form of orthorhombic andtetragonal phases is obtained by wet ball milling. From the hybrid form heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs, this work results that mechanical phase transition of orthorhombic phase make a new form as distorted type orthorhombic phase of PbO.

  • 주석은 최근 첨단 전기, 전자 제품의 핵심 소재로써 지속적인 수요 증가가 예상되는 전략 금속이다. 국내의 수요량은 2011년 기준 약 17,000톤 으로 99% 이상 수입에 의존하고 있는 실정이다. 그러나, 국내의 주석 제련 산업은 전무한 상태이며 폐자원에서 재활용하는 회수 기술도 초보 단계이다. 이러한 폐자원 발생량은 12,000톤/year이며, 약 1200억원에 달하는 규모이다. 다양한 폐자원의 선별적 전처리 요소 기술 개발 및 회수 공정 시스템 개발이 절실히 요구된다. 본 연구에서는, 주석 폐자원 중 solder 용융물 및 공정 스크랩 Lead solder, Lead-free solder 등 뿐만 아니라, ITO target 제조 시 발생하는 ITO sludge 등의 고상 폐자원으로부터 페자원의 물성을 파악하여 금속/산화물과의 파/분쇄 및 분급공정을 통하여 고품위의 주석 금속을 회수하였다. 뿐만 아니라, 고순도 주석시 발생하는 양극 슬라임 침출액 등의 액상 폐자원으로부터 희소금속의 추출 및 회수를 위해 습식 전처리 공정을 수행하였다. 침출액은 주석, 구리, 납 등의 유가금속이 이온형태로 존재하고 있으며, Chlorine이 다량 함유되어 있다. 고품위의 주석 산화물을 회수하기 위하여 침출액 내의 구리 제거 공정, Chlorine 제거 공정 등을 순차적으로 수행하여 고품위의 산화물 회수를 수행하였다.

Effects of Metallaic Dialkyldithiophosphates on Lubricating Oil (금속 디알킬디티오인산염이 윤활유에 미치는 영향)

  • Metallic dialkyldithiophosphates are widely used in lubricating oils as antioxidant and antiwear agents. Zinc DDTP are used most frequently in lubricating oil. Zinc, lead, tin and cobalt DDTP were prepared with primary and secondary alkyl groups. The effects of oxidation, thermal stability, metal corrosion and antiwear of each metallic DDTP prepared were studied. Based on the results, cobalt DDTP has a significant effect of antiwear on chrome alloy steel comparing with the other metallic DDTP. Also cobalt DDTP has a characteristic property of thermal sensitivity in its color, which was shown by the color change from brown to blue over a certain temperature. Another phenomenon obtained was that all metallic DDTP initiates the effect of antioxidation at the time of reaching to a certain effective acid concentration in lubricating oil.

Determination of lead content in the plastic by ICP and AAS using HI reduction - PbSO4 dissolution method (HI 환원-PbSO4용해법을 이용한 ICP와 AAS에 의한 플라스틱 중의 납 정량 방법)

  • Plastic was decomposed with nitric acid after being carbonized by sulfuric acid. Then excess sulfuric acid and nitric acid was removed by evaporating and drying. Precipitated $SO{_4}^{-2}$ ion of $PbSO_4$ was resolved itself into $H_2S$ by HI in hydrochloric acid and was volatilized. Then $Pb^{+2}$ was dissolved and was measured by AAS and ICP. The test for reproducibility using PVC-Pb standard material (690-34610mg/kg) was conducted and the accuracy was more than 99.9% compared with the estimated concentration. The precision by AAS was 99.8% and that of ICP was 99.9%.

Adsorption of Decomposed-Granite Soils Varing with Weathering on Heavy Metals (화강풍화토의 풍화도에 따른 중금속 흡착특성)

  • Effects of weathering intensity on the adsorption of heavy metals such as lead(Pb) and copper(Cu) onto decomposed granite soils were investigated by a series of batch tests. The chemical components such as $SiO_2$, $K_2O$ and $Na_2O$ having relatively high solubility were reduced and the oxidized $Fe_2O_3$ content was increased with the increase of weathering intensity. Weathering of granite soils increased the ignition loss and specific surface area, while it decreased the permeability. The lead and copper adsorptions onto the decomposed granites were enhanced with the increase of weathering intensity, mainly due to the increase of specific surface area and clayed contents. Adsorption of lead and copper onto the weathered granites could be more adequately described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model than the pseudo-first-order model.
