This study was carried out in order to provide basic information on neutralization processes of acid mine drainage (AMD) from the abandoned Donghae coal mine in the Samchuk coalfield. The contents of potentially toxic elements in stream water increase and the level of pH decreases during dry season. Hydrated lime is turned out to be the best neutralizer of the acid mine water from a technical and economic viewpoint. From the results of equilibrium calculation, Fe and Al could be precipitated as FeOOH, and Al(OH)$_3$, respectively, in the neutralization process. The sites of holding basins necessary to equalize quantity and quality of AMD are recommended by GIS analysis, and the capacities of holding basins are determined by hydrological calculation.
The objective of this study was to compare acid-neutralizing and buffering capacity of four tree species against soil acidification by acid rain. About 30-year-old forests composed of Pinus rigida, Alnus hirsuta, Quercus mongolica, and Liriodendron tulipifera in a provincial experimental forest located 15km east from Banwol Industrial Complex in Kyonggido were used in this study. Incident precipitation, throughfall and stemflow, and soil samples were collected from May to September, 1996 to analyze their pH and canon concentrations. Internal leaf pH, external acid neutralizing capacity(ENC), and buffering capacity index(BCI) of leaves were also determined. The incident precipitation showed an average pH of 4.56, with the percentage of acid rain incidents being 74%. The average soil pH of the study area was 4.15. The pH of throughfall and stemflow in all four species was higher than that of precipitation except that of the stemflow of Pinus rigida which showed a pH of 3.73. The throughfall of Liriodendron tulipifera showed the highest pH of 5.38. The pH of throughfall and stemflow showed a positive correlation and no correlation, respectively, with precipitations. The most abundant cation in precipitation was Ca. The canon concentraions in throughfall and stemflow decreased in the following order of K, Na, Ca, and Mg. Cation concentrations in stemflow were highest in Lirioendron tulipifera and lowest in Pines rigida. Nutrient leaching from above ground increased with decreasing pH of precipitation. The pH of stemflow showed a positive correlation with ENC and BCI. The highest values in ENC, BCI, soil pH, and soil cation concentrations were observed in Liriodendron tulipifera, while the lowest values were obtained in Pinus rigida, It was concluded that Liriodendron tulipifera had highest neutralizing capacity against acid rain, while Pinus rigida had the lowest capacity and even promoted acidification of soil.
The effect of completed mineral fertilizer on barley was investigated on ordinary upland and newly recrimed soil derived from granite, basalt and shale. 1. Yield of barley grains with application of completed meneral fertilizer 1 level varied from 100.8% to 233.1% on various soils in different parents rock, and 2 levels of the fertilizer varied from 250.1% to 309.5% on ordinary upland and newly recrimed soil derived from granite compared with control plot. But no effect on newly recrimed soil derived from basalt and shale. 2. $P_2O_5$, MgO and B contents in straw were increased, but Mn contents was decreased on all of soil. N contents in straw was decreased on the soil derived from granite, but $K_2O$ contents was increased on the soil derived from basalt and shale. 3. Relation between the yield and absorbed nutrient had related with positive correlection of 1-5%. 4. N and Mn contents in soil were decreased by application of completed mineral fertilizer, but soil pH, C.E.C. $Av-P_2O_5$, Ex-CaO, Ex-MgO and B contents were increased. Especially soil pH and C.E.C. were increased remarkably. 5. Relation between the yield and Ex-CaO and Ex-MgO contents in soil had related with positive correlation, but Mn contents had related with negative correlation.
Friar Tuck, an Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) site, is located on the Greene-Sullivan county line in southwest Indiana. Prior to the on-going reclamation, Friar Tuck was one of the Indiana's largest and most environmentally adverse abandoned mine lands. The direct vegetation method was used to reclaim tailing ponds. Grading, capping, and revegetalon using agricultural limestone, fertilizer, mulch and seed were applied to the gob piles to abate acid mine drainage (AMD) and off-side sedimentaion. Erosion control structures such as terrace, diversion ditch, and gabion structures were also constructed to minimize erosion at slopes. A new method for treatment of AMD using apatite was tested in the laboratory and field. Apatite effectively removed iron, aluminum and sulfate while maintaining an almost constant pH. Apparently, this method can be applied to control AMD from mining refuse materials, even those containing high concentrations of iron and aluminum ions.
Effects of acid deposition on the acidification of surface water over a short term period were studied during June~October, 1995. A reservoir located in Chunchon, Kangwondo was selected for this study because this reservoir had received little man-made pollutants. Geological survey within the study area was carried out and the pH of a small and shallow stream flowing from the mountain valley down to the reservoir was monitored. Rainfall was measured by using a rain gauge and the precipitation was collected by automatic precipitation sampler. During the study period, rain pH was in the range of 3.81~5.77 with an average of 4.8. The EC was in the range of 5~189$\mu$S/cm with an average of 10.6$\mu$S/cm. ionic composition of the rainfall showed that of the anions, deposition of ${SO_4}^{2-}$, was highest with 3,119.7 kg/$\textrm{km}^2$, and it was $NH^{4+}$ with 1,053.2kg/$\textrm{km}^2$ for cations. The surface water pHs were maintained neutral or weak basic representing little evidence of acidification regardless of the acidic rainfall pH. Every time of sampling, however, the pHs exhibited increasing tendency as elevation of measuring site of the stream became lowered, which indicated the impacts of acid-base reactions by acidic or basic substances during travel of water downstream. This result suggested the necessity of further research to determine the respective buffering capacity of soil and underlying rocks.
Contents and distribution of amino acids in the humic acid and fulvic acid fractions of different types ($R_p$, B, A, P) were investigated. Extracted humic and fulvic acids were purified and analyzed. The results are summarized as the following: (1) Composition of Humus The total humus ($H_T$), amount of humic acid (a), amount of fulvic acid (b), and ${\Delta}logK$ all decrease in the order of $R_p$ > B > A > P type. The same trend was observed in the total nitrogen and carbon. (2) Contents and composition of amino acids in humic acids. 1) The total amounts of amino acids in the humic acid fraction of different types were in the following order for soils under coniferous forest trees: $R_p$ > B > A > P type, but for soils under deciduous forest trees the order was P > A > $R_p$ > B type. There were positive correlationships between total amino acids and total carbon and ${\Delta}logK$ for humic acids from soils under coniferous forest trees, but a negative correlationship was existed. between total amino acids and C/N ratios. No significant correlation was found for samples taken from soils under deciduous forest trees. 2) The ratios of one group of amino acids to the others were compared. The ratios of acidic amino acids were in the order of P > $R_p$ > B > A type. those of neutral amino acids followed the order of $R_p$ > B > A > P type and those of the basic amino acids were in the order of B > A >$R_p$ > P type for soils under coniferous forest trees. Contents of total amino acids were in the order of the neutral > the acidic > the basic amino acids. For the soils under deciduous forest trees the order of the ratio was different. Acidic amino acids followed the order of A > P > B > $R_p$ type, neutral ones followed the order of P > $R_p$ > A > B type, and the basic amino acids did the order of $$P{\geq_-}$$ A > B $$\geq_-$$$-R_p$ type where the difference was very small. 3) In general aspartic aicd, glycine and glutamic acid were the major components in all samples. Histidine, tyrosine and methionine belonged to the group contained in a small amount. (3) Contents and composition of amino acids in fulvic acids. 1) The total amounts of amino acids of different types of fulvic acids were in the order of $R_p$ > B > P > A type regardless of origin of samples. There were positive correlationships observed between the toal amino acids and total carbon and ${\Delta}logK$ for soils under coniferous forest trees. For soils under deciduous forest trees, positive correlationships were observed among total amino aicds, total nitrogen, total humus ($H_T$), total humic aicd (a), and ${\Delta}logK$, but a negative correlationship existed between total amino acids and C/N ratio. 2) Thr ratio among acidic amino acids, neutral amino acids and basic amino acids of different types were $R_p$ > B > P > A type. In this respect there was no difference between the two soils. 3) In general glycine, aspartic acid, and alanine were the major constituents in all samples of different types, while tyrosine and methionine were contained in a small amount. Virtually no amount of arginine was measured.
Researches were carried out to investigate the characteristics and concentration of heavy metal elements of stream water through Dongmyoung abandoned metal mine and soil adjacent to the mine. The pH range of water was 5.9∼7.1 that implies the water environment was acidic to neutral. The contents and distribution aspects of heavy metals in water samples varied with geochemical characteristics of element, but the concentration of heavy metals has the tendency of increase closer to the mine in general. The results of soil analysis show that total heavy metal concentration of agricultural soil near mine was far lower than those of ore tailing and dumping site. Therefore, the effects of the abandoned mine on stream water and agricultural products were supposed to be insignificant, particularly because the portion of absorbed carbonates and reducible fractions among total heavy metal concentration was relatively lower than the other. Since, however total heavy metal concentrations of mining site were relatively higher than those of adjacent region, there is a possibility of heavy metal difussion when the chemical environment of the site changes due to migration of surface and underground water. It is suggested that the preventive measures for water and soil pollution by the heavy metals would be considered around the region.

To minimize the danger of soil erosion and settle habitats earlier, afforestation, which vegetates bare slopes, is selected as an environmental recovering technology. Large portions of these areas often are suffered by a bad germination and growth inhibition of sprayed seeds. Afforested materials collected in the normal and damaged sites were not any big difference in chemical characteristics and biological response to ryegrass. But background soil of the damaged site has very low pH (3.6) and high contents of iron and aluminum compared with them of the normal sites. Both germination and root growth of ryegrass were inhibited severely in the water extracts of damaged soils, but not in the water extracts of normal sites. Groundwater collected nearby the damaged sites was very strong acidic (pH 33) and exhibited a high value of electrical conductivity and high contents of iron and aluminum. In the ground water, germinated ryegrass was scarcely grown. In Al standard solution, the root growth of ryegrass was inhibited over 50% in 0.5 mM in pH 3.5-4.5 and in 1.4 mM in pH 5.5, which seems to be related to $Al^{3+}$ activity in solution. In the ferric Fe ($Fe^{3+}$) standard solution, ryegrass growth was inhibited over 50% in the concentration of 14-19 mM in root and 23-25 mM in shoot. This strong tolerance of ryegrass to $Fe^{3+}$ might be concerned with the very low activity of $Fe^{3+}$ at pH 3.5-5.5. In contrast, ryegrass responded very sensitively to ferrous Fe ion ($Fe^{2+}$), especially in root growth: $Fe^{2+}$ concentrations corresponding to 50% growth reduction were 0.3-0.4 mM at pH 3.5-5.5 in roots. This high growth inhibition should be related to the high ion activity of $Fe^{2+}$ irrespective of different pH conditions. In conclusion, low pH and high contents of $Fe^{2+}$ and aluminum seem to be caused by pyrite and be closely related to the growth inhibition of ryegrass seeded in afforested area.
