  • The aim of this study is to analyse the landslide susceptibility and the future hazard in Inje, Korea using probability rainfalls and artificial neural network (ANN) environment based on geographic information system (GIS). Data for rainfall probability, topography, and geology were collected, processed, and compiled in a spatial database using GIS. Deokjeok-ri that had experienced 694 landslides by Typhoon Ewinia in 2006 was selected for analysis and verification. The 50% of landslide data were randomly selected to use as training data while the other 50% being used for verification. The probability of landslides for target years (1 year, 3 years, 10 years, 50 years, and 100 years) was calculated assuming that landslides are triggered by 1-day rainfall of 202 mm or 3-day cumulative rainfalls of 449 mm.

  • Recently, landslide disasters caused by severe rain storms and typhoons have been frequently reported. Due to the geomorphologic characteristics of Korea, considerable portion of urban area and infrastructures such as road and railway have been constructed near mountains. These infrastructures may encounter the risk of landslide and debris flow. It is important to evaluate the highly risky locations of landslide and to prepare measures for the protection of landslide in the process of construction planning. In this study, a landslide-risk prediction equation is proposed based on the statistical analysis of 423 landslide data set obtained from field surveys, disaster reports on national road, and digital maps of landslide area. Each dataset includes geomorphologic characteristics, soil properties, rainfall information, forest properties and hazard history. The comparison between the result of proposed equation and actual occurrence of landslide shows 92 percent in the accuracy of classification. Since the input for the equation can be provided within short period and low cost, and the results of equation can be easily incorporated with hazard map, the proposed equation can be effectively utilized in the analysis of landslide-risk for large mountainous area.

  • In this study, types of rock slope failure are analyzed by considering both joint characteristics investigated on previous landslide regions located at northern part of Mt. Jiri and geographic features of natural slopes deduced from GIS. The landslide prediction map was produced by superposing the frequency ratio layers for the six geographic features including elevation, slope aspect, slope angle, shaded relief, curvature and stream distance, and then the landslide risk map was deduced by combination of the prediction map and the damage map obtained by taking account of humanity factors such as roads and buildings in the study area. According to analysis on geographic features for previous landslide regions, the landslides occurred as following rate: 88% at 330~710 m in elevation, 77.7% at $90{\sim}270^{\circ}$ in slope aspect, 93.9% at $10{\sim}40^{\circ}$ in slope angle, 82.78% at grade3~7 in shaded relief, 86.28% at -5~+5 in curvature, and 82.92% within 400m in stream distance. Approximately 75% of the landslide regions belongs to the region of 'high' or 'very high' grade in the prediction map, and 13.27% of the study area is exposed to 'high risk' of landslide.

  • Recently, forest soil sediment disasters resulting from locally concentrated heavy rainfall have been occurring frequently in steep slope areas. The importance of landslide hazard map is emerging to analyze landslide vulnerable areas. This study was carried out to develop HyGIS-Landslide based on Hydro Geographic Information System in order to analyze forest soil sediment disaster in the mountainous river basin. HyGIS-Landslide is one of HyGIS components designed by considering the landslide hazard criteria of Korea Forest Service. It could show the distribution of landslide hazard areas after calculating the spatial data. In this system, the user could reset the weight of hazard criteria to reflect the regional characteristics of the landslide area. This component provided user interface that could make the latest spatial data available in the area of interest. HyGIS-Landslide could be applied to the surveyor's compensation score and it was possible to reflect the landslide risk exactly through it. Also, it could be used in topographic analysis techniques providing spatial analysis and making topographical parameters in HyGIS. Finally the accuracy could be acquired by calculating the landslide hazard grade map and landslide mapping data. This study applied HyGIS-Landslide at the Gangwon-do province sample site. As a result, HyGIS-Landslide could be applied to a decision support system searching for mountainous disaster risk region; it could be classified more effectively by re-weighting the landslide hazard criteria.

  • Landslides cause enormous economic losses and casualties. Korea has mountainous regions and heavy slopes in most parts of the land and has consistently built new roads and large-scale housing complexes according to its industrial and urban growth. As a result, the damage from landslides becomes greater every year. In summer, landslides frequently occur due to local torrential rains and storms. It is critical to predict the potential areas of landslides in advance and to take preventive measures to minimize consequences and to protect property and human life. The previous study on landslides mostly focused on identifying the causes of landslides in the areas where they occurred, and on analyzing landslide vulnerability around the areas without considering rainfall conditions. Thus there were not enough evaluations of the direct risk of landslides to human life. In this study, potentially risky areas for landslides were identified using the GIS data in order to evaluate direct risk on farmlands, roads, and artificial structures that were closely connected to human life. A map of landslide risk was made taking into account rainfall conditions, and a land use map was also drawn with satellite images and digital maps. Both maps were used to identify potentially risky areas for landslides.

  • Landslide researches are divided to a method of interrelationship for various factors, method of predicting landslide possibility, and method of estimating landslide risk which are occurring landslides in the natural slope. Most of landslides occurred in natural slope are caused by a heavy rainfall in summer season. Weathered soil layer located in upper side of rock mass was occurred. As well as, they are announced to have an influence to geometry, geology, soil characteristics, and precipitation in the natural slope. In order to investigate and interpret the variety of landslides from field investigation to risk analysis, landslide analysis process due to geotechnical and geological opinions are systematically demanded. In this research, the study area is located in Macheon area, Gyeongsangnam-do and performed the landslide investigation. From the results of landslide investigation and analysis, optimized standard model based on natural landslide is proposed to high technical method of landslide investigation and interpretation.

  • Landslides occur in Korea every year because it has numerous mountainous regions and approximately two-thirds of the annual rainfall falls in Summer. Therefore, it is important to predict potential areas of landslides and minimize the damage in advance to protect property and human life. Therefore, in the present study, the potential danger areas were extracted from a digital map, digital forest map, digital forest site environmental map, and digital geologic map to estimate the landslide hazard. In addition, the assessment of landslide danger was analyzed by first and second estimations based on the criteria from the Korea Forest Research Institute using a GIS technique, which was finally judged by a field investigation.
