  • Data from an investigation of vulnerable conifer species in the subalpine zone in Korea obtained by the Korea Forest Service in 2017-2018 and monitoring research conducted by the National Institute of Forest Science since 2014 were used to analyze the status of distribution and growing condition of three major conifer species (Abies nephrolepis, Abies koreana, and Picea jezoensis) in the subalpine zone in the Baekdudaegan protected area. The distribution area of the studied species in the Baekdudaegan protected area was ca. 74% (8,035 ha) of the total distribution area in Korea, indicating that Baekdudaegan is a core area for conservation and restoration of subalpine conifer species. From decline index [A. nephrolepis in Mt. Taebaeksan and Mt. Deogyusan increased by 77.3% and 29.6%, respectively; A. koreana in Mt. Jirisan (Chunwangbong Peak) increased by 45.2% in four years; and P. jezoensis in Mt. Jirisan (Chunwangbong Peak) increased by 47.8% in two years] and seedling frequency (lower frequency of newly recruited seedlings than dead seedlings) results, the studied species are expected to face difficulties in sustainability. In contrast, at Mt. Seseoksan and Chunwangbong Peak in Mt. Jirisan, the health of trees and seedling frequency showed a partial tendency to recover and increase. In addition, we identified the relationship between the decline index and seedling frequency. These results will support the implementation of conservation strategies for vulnerable conifer species in the subalpine zone.

  • This study was conducted to estimate aboveground biomass and nitrogen storage potential of tree species-eight clones of a poplar and hybrids, one clone of Salix alba L., dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu and W.C. Cheng), yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.), Okamoto maple (Acer okamotoanum Nakai), and pin oak (Quercus palustris $M{\ddot{u}}nchh.$)- after treating with liquid pig manure. Stems showed the highest percentage of aboveground biomass, and followed by branches and leaves. Nitrogen content in aboveground biomass components was the highest in leaves, and followed by branches and stems. Average aboveground biomass production was higher in the clones and species treated with manure than those of not treated, 30 ton/ha and 16 ton/ha, respectively. In the manure-treated site, clone 'Dorskamp' of Populus deltoides${\times}$Populus nigra showed the highest aboveground biomass (48.3 ton/ha). Average nitrogen storage potential was superior in the clones and species treated with manure than those of not treated, 159 kg/ha and 90 kg/ha, respectively. Clone 'Dorskamp' also showed the greatest nitrogen storage potential (286.5 kg/ha) among tested tree species. Therefore, 'Dorskamp' is the most suitable clone for treating liquid pig manure, but additional studies are needed to determine any damages or tolerance from the treatment.

  • Physical and mechanical properties of major Korean ash species were examined. For Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Fraxinus sieboldiana, green moisture content of sapwood was almost the same value as heartwood. Heartwood of Fraxinus mandshurica, however, had slightly higher moisture content than sapwood. Green and oven dry densities of F. mandshurica were lower than those of F. rhynchophylla and F. sieboldiana. Swelling and shrinkage of sapwood in F. sieboldiana showed somewhat higher value than those of F. rhynchophylla. Longitudinal compressive strength and modulus of elasticity in F. sieboldiana were lower values than those in the other species. Shearing strength in radial section was higher than that in tangential section of all samples. It could be noted that shearing strength of F. sieboldiana demonstrated higher value than that of the other species. Three species had excellent bending properties in MOR and MOE. Impact bending absorbed energy for F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica did not show any significant differences.

  • Amid the recent intensification of climate change, the decline of subalpine coniferous species is evident. Accordingly, the Korea Forest Service is conducting research to establish conservation measures, identify the causes of the decline of subalpine coniferous species, and establish conservation strategies for seven species of conifers in the alpine region. This study used an economic value evaluation method to present objective data to inform the need for and value of conservation of endangered coniferous species through the recognition of endangered coniferous species and evaluation of conservation value among coniferous species conservation strategies in endangered alpine areas. A contingent valuation method was applied. As a result, the estimated conservation value per household of endangered alpine coniferous species was 49,181 won.

  • The objective of this study was to monitor the edge vegetation development process after timber harvesting at deciduous hardwood forest in Seoul National University Research Forest of Baekwoonsan (Mt), Korea The results from the 4th (2001) and 5th (2003) survey for edge vegetation development process after timber harvesting are summarized as follows. The competitive species at the harvested forest edge are Lindera erythrocarpa, Weigela subsessilis, Lespedeza maximowiczii, Lindera obtusiioba, Arajia eiata. There were Lindera erythrocarpa, Ivelgela subsessilis, Staphyiea bumaida as competitive species at harvested forest border between harvested forest edge and harvested interior. And at the forest interior, the competitive species were Lindera erythrocarpa, Lindera obtusiloba. There were differences in the competitive species at the forest edge due to the differences in direction, altitude, and existing dominant species. But Lindera erythrocarpa, Weigela subsessilis were appeared to be a competitive specieg at the southwestern slope (A site) and northeastern slope (B site). After timber harvesting, Sasa borealisshowed a good growth in early days, but showed a tendency of declining with the developing of canopy layer And coverage was generally higher at the Northeastern slope (Site B) than southwestern slop (Site A). The similarity index was lower as the distance from the forest edge becomes farther.

  • The objectives of this study were to examine the production processes and methods of "Forest Type Map Actualization Production (Database (DB) Construction Work Manual)" (Work Manual) identify issues associated with the production processes and methods, and suggest solutions for them by applying evaluation items to a 1:5k digital forest type map. The evaluation items applied to a forest type map were divided into zoning and attributes, and the issues associated with the production processes and methods of Work Manual were derived through analyzing the characteristics of the stand structure and fragmentation by administrative districts. Korea is divided into five divisions, where one is set as the area changed naturally and the other four areas set as the area changed artificially. The area changed naturally has been updated every five years, and those changed artificially have been updated annually. The fragmentation of South Korea was analyzed in order to examine the consistency of the DB established for each region. The results showed that, in South Korea, the number of patches increased and the mean patch size decreased. As a result, the degree of fragmentation and the complexity of shapes increased. The degree of fragmentation and the complexity of shapes decreased in four regions out of 17 regions (metropolitan cities and provinces). The results indicated that there were spatial variations. The "Forest Classification" defines the minimum area of a zoning as 0.1ha. This study examined the criteria for the minimum area of a zoning by estimating the divided object (polygon unit) in a forest type map. The results of this study revealed that approximately 26% of objects were smaller than the minimum area of a zoning. The results implied that it would be necessary to establish the definition and the regeneration interval of "Areas Changed Artificially and Areas Changed Naturally", and improve the standard for the minimum area of a zoning. Among the attributes of Work Manual, "Species Change" item classifies terrain features into 52 types, and 43 types of them belong to stocking land. This study examined distribution ratios by extracting species information from the forest type map. It was found that each of 23 species, approximately 53% of species, occupied less than 0.1% of Forested land. The top three species were pine and other species. Although undergrowth on unstocked forest land are classified in the terrain feature system, their definition and classification criteria are not established in the "Forest Classification" item. Therefore, it will be needed to reestablish the terrain feature system and set the definitions of undergrowth.

  • In this study, we developed a dynamic stand yield model to estimate the baseline carbon stock, which is essentially required for a forest carbon offset project based on forest management. For developing the yield model, the data was acquired from the databases of the $5^{th}$ National Forest Inventory. The model was validated by comparing its estimations with field measurements that were conducted from 4 study sites (14 plots with thinning treatments) located in Hong-chun, Hoeng-sung, Yang-yang Daechi and Yang-yang Jungja. The difference between the estimations and the field measurements was less than 5%. Using the dynamic stand yield model, we estimated the changes in stand yield volume and carbon stocks for each species according to the baseline scenarios. As the results, we found that baseline carbon stock was the highest at Quercus acutissima stand (83.01tC/ha), while the lowest at Pinus rigida stand (32.17tC/ha) and Pinus densiflora stand of central region (39.09tC/ha). Hence, a project provider could get more carbon emission credits from an improved forest management project when considering the project with Pinus rigida stand or Pinus densiflora stand (central region). The baseline carbon stock and the dynamic stand yield model developed from this study would be useful for designing carbon offset projects based on improved forest management.

  • This study was conducted to develop site index equations and to estimate productive areas for major coniferous species in Korea such as Pinus densiflora Sieb. et. Zucc, Pinus densiflora for. erect, Larix leptolepis and Pinus koraiensis using environmental factors. Using the large data set from both a digital forest site map and a climatic map, a total of 43 environmental factors including 15 climatic variables were regressed on site index by tree species to develop site index equations. Six environmental factors by species were selected as independent variables in the final site index equations. The result showed that the coefficients of determination for site index equations by species were ranged from 0.36 to 0.56, which seem to be relatively low but good enough for the estimation of forest stand productivity. The site index equations developed in this study were also verified by three evaluation statistics such as the estimation bias of model, precision of model, and mean square error of measurement. According to the evaluation statistics, it was found that the site index equations by species fitted well to the test data sets with relatively low bias and variation. As a result, it was concluded that the site index equations by species were well capable of estimating site quality. Based on the site index equations, the productive areas by species for all forest areas were estimated by applying GIS technique to the digital forest site map and climate map. In addition, the distribution of productive areas by species was illustrated by using GIS technique.
