  • This experiment was carried out to obtain some information about overwintering, physiological and ecological characteristics of apple snails. Another purpose of this experiment was to characterize an appetite for rice plants by apple snails and to elucidate their choice of fresh green ones (vegetables, some other crops, weeds in rice fields). The freshwater snails were found with higher population at sites abundant organic compounds such as plant debris and at regions with high temperature. They also prefer calcium-rich water. This is a naturally occurring process. Apple snails were exceptionally veil-adapted to the south regions of Korea, especially Janghang, Jangseong and Haenam, even if the temperature of winter season is cold below 0$^{\circ}C$. Apple snails were not very selective in their food choice and eat almost everything available in their environment. A snail have something called a radula in its mouth for grinding up its food. A apple snail also chews on fruits and young succulent plant barks. In case of reproduction. apple snails deposit about 157$\sim$784 (average of 321 eggs) milky white to pale orange colored eggs above the waterline. In approximately every 22.4 seconds a new egg appears. The total time needed to deposit a egg mass varies from 58 minutes$\sim$4 hours 13 minutes. Apple snails reproduct actively from May to June and from September to October. An appetite of apple snails for rice plants was the different depending on their size and glowing stage for rice plants. Apple snails had a great appetite of rice plants as well as dropwort, tomato, cabbage, radish, aquatic plants etc. They preferred to eat young rice plants and drastically quit eating rice plants of over 40 cm in height. Thus considering the food preference of apple snail for various plants including rice, they were thought to be a potentially strong predator in fields, especially, at regions with warmer winter.

  • The larval fish, which had been previously identified or classified as Enedrias (Pholis) nebulosus, Enedrias spp., Pholis taczanowskii, and unidentified species belonging to Protosalanginae, were revealed as that of a gunnel, Enedrias fangi. This species has been known as a cold water species mainly caught in the Yellow Sea. Larval E. fangi showed peak abundances in the coastal waters off Chonlla Province in March, Chungnam Province in April, and Kyunggi Province in May and June. The primary spawning season of E. fangi seemed to be winter (November to January), and the eggs hatched after 60 days from spawning. The average growth rate of larval fish was about 0.33mm/day. The larval fish of 40mm in body length began to move to the bottom, and stayed in the bottom cold water mass when their body length was greater than 60-70mm. The average annual catches of larval E. fangi from 1985 to 1991 were 5,000M/T in the Yellow Sea, which were more than 99 % of the total gunnel catches around Korean waters. The peak season of catches was from March or April to July in Chungnam Province, and from May to July in Kyunggi Province.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the egg, larvae and juveniles development of Abbottina springeri. For the experiments, the matured adults were collected at the Seowon-cheon, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, in Korea. The amount of spawning of female A. springeri was about 1,225~2,100 (1,662±437, n=10). The fertilized eggs were circular in shape and 1.05~1.13 (1.08±0.02, n=30) mm in diameter. The hatching time was required 72 hours to 80 hours after fertilization under water temperature of 22℃. The newly hatched larvae were 2.10~2.23 (2.16±0.04, n=10) mm in total length and had egg yolk in the abdomen but the mouth was not opened. At 5 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae were 3.19~3.30 (3.24±0.03, n=10) mm in total length and the most of yolk-sac was absorbed. At the 15 days after hatching, the flexion larvae were 4.97~5.30 (5.13±0.12, n=10) mm in total length and the tip of the caudal fin was began to bend upward. At the 25 days after hatching, the postflexion larvae were 8.97~9.60 (9.44±0.16, n=10) mm in total length and the tip of the caudal fin was bent at 45°. At the 35 days after hatching, the juvenile were 12.0~13.5 (12.7±0.53, n=10) mm in total length and all fin-rays (iii7 dorsal fin, iii6 anal fin, i7 ventral fins) were reached a constant number of each part.

  • During ichthyoplankton survey in the southwestern sea of Korea, we collected six individuals of noodlefish larvae and juveniles between April and May 2023. They were identified as Neosalanx anderssoni by mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I or 16S ribosomal RNA sequences, and their external morphological traits were described for the first time. All six individuals have a slender and elongated body. When preflexion and flexion larval stages (10.24 mm notochord length, NL and 15.47 mm total length, TL, respectively), oval-shaped black melanophores were distributed in a row along the ventral side of the gut. However, when postflexion larval and juvenile stages (23.58~25.90 mm TL, and 29.20~31.26 mm TL, respectively), melanophores on the ventral side of the gut were disappeared, and dark spot-shaped melanophores appeared along the dorsal side of the gut in a single row. Also, from the postflexion larval stage (23.58 mm TL), two large black spots began to appear symmetrically on the caudal fin. Our results suggest that N. anderssoni may use coastal area as spawning and/or nursery ground unlike previous study (Kim and Park, 2002).

  • This study investigated the early life history of Hemibarbus labeo from in Wicheon, stream Nakdonggang-River, and compared their characteristics with closely related species. In April 2021, egg formation and development of autonomous fish were observed in fertilized eggs collected at four spawning sites. The size of the fertilized egg was 1.93~2.39 (average 2.22±0.15, n=30) mm. The water temperature was 22.2~24.1°C, and the hatching time took 109~115 hours. Newly after hatching, the total length of the yolk-sac larvae was 7.50~8.80 (average 7.99±0.46) mm, and the mouth and anus did not develop and had difficulty in being yolk. 6 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae were fed with a total length of 9.49~10.2 (9.78±0.23, n=30) mm. 10 days after hatching, the flexion larvae was 9.97~11.9 (10.7±0.72, n=30) mm in total length, and the tail of the vertebrae began to bend. 20 days after hatching, the postflexion larvae was 12.6~15.2 (13.9±0.77, n=30) mm in total length, and the tailbone was completely bent to 45°. 29 days after hatching, the total length of the juvenile was 16.9~19.8 (18.1±0.91, n=30) mm, and the number of fins reached an integer with 10 dorsal fins, 9 anal fins, and 7 ventral fins. The distribution of melanophore, such as the head, the center of the body, and the upper part of the fin, was different from that of the allied species during the postflexion larvae period, so the morphological characteristics could be distinguished.

  • The early life history of Silurus microdorsalis living in Jahocheon Stream was studied by observing egg and morphological development. Live fish were captured in June 2018, then reared in a circulating filtration system under a 14L : 10D photoperiod with a water temperature of 18℃. To artificially induce spawning, females were injected with 0.5 mL of Ovaprim (Syndel, Nanaimo, BC, Canada) per kg of body weight, and males were injected with 10,000 IU/kg body weight of human chorionic gonadotropin. Approximately 15 h later, eggs were artificially inseminated by the dry method. Mature eggs were light pale yellow, which separated them from immature eggs. Fertilized eggs were 2.16±0.06 mm (n=8) in diameter and fully hatched at 181 h after fertilization. The fertilization rate was 63.1±2.2%, and 10.0±3.7% of the embryos were malformed at 18℃. The rates of development were 181 h at 18℃, 109 h at 21℃, and 76 h at 24℃. The larval size immediately after hatching was 4.64±0.22 mm (n=8), and the larvae displayed negative phototaxis at 1 day after hatching. The total larval length on 7 days after hatching was 12.47±0.53 mm, with 25~30 basal anal fin rays and 14~16 basal caudal fin rays observed. The total larval length was 14.13±0.51 mm on 9 days after hatching, and approximately 90% of the black endoplasmic reticulum was deposited on the head and body. The dorsal fin had formed, and a single basal body was observed. On 15 days after hatching, the total larval length was 16.69±0.31 mm; the number of basal caudal fin rays (18 poles) was an integer because 2 dorsal fin basal rays and 60~63 anal fin basal rays were observed. The total larval length was 28.96±1.10 mm on 50 days after hatching; the numbers of caudal fins (n=18), dorsal fins (n=3), pectoral fins (n=11), and anal fin basal rays (n=67~73) were integers.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the early life history by observing the egg development of Ladislavia taczanowskii in endangered fish and to use it as basic data for species conservation research. The broodstork used in the study was secured from the area of the Hongcheon River in Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon State. The broodstork, who was being raised in the laboratory, selected mature individuals in May 2021 and induced them to spawn by hormone injection. The size of the maturation egg was 1.50~1.79 (average 1.59±0.08, n=30) mm due to the circular invasive egg. The incubation time took 168 hours at 16.5℃ and 109 hours and 30 minutes at 25.5℃. Newly hatched larvae, the consonants had a total length of 5.55~6.31 mm (6.30±6.93, n=30) mm, and the mouth and anus did not open and had egg yolk. 5 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae had a total length of 9.91~10.8 (10.1±0.27, n=30) mm, and the mouth and anus opened, and feeding activities began. 8 days after hatching, the flexion larvae had a total length of 10.3~11.4 (10.8±0.38, n=30) mm, and the end of the vertebrae at the tail fin tip began to bend upward. 10 day after hatching, the postflexion larvae had a total length of 11.8~13.1 (12.3±0.43, n=30) mm, and the end of the vertebrae at the tail tip was completely bent at 45°. 18 days after hatching, the total length of the juveniles was 18.9~23.4 (20.4±1.69, n=30) mm, and the number of fins in each part was fin rays with 10 dorsal fins, 9 anal fins, 22 caudal fins, and 7 ventral fins. As a result of the study, the postflexion larvae showed differences in morphology from other Gobioninae fishes in the upper part of the tail's hypural, the shape of spots on the dorsal vertebrae, the vertical stripes developed on the head, and the irregularly deposited melanophore throughout the body.

  • In June and July 2023, a total of 101 Thryssa kammalensis larvae and juveniles were collected during an ichthyoplankton survey using RN80 in the waters around the southwest coasts of Korea. When pre-flexion larval stage (3.77~10.20 mm NL, n=22), some individuals have pterygiophores of dorsal and anal fins, but no apparent fin rays were formed. Line-shaped melanophores were distributed in a row from below the opercle to the anal fin base. When flexion larval stage (12.13~16.69 mm SL, n=14), the number of dorsal and anal fin rays were 13~15 and 18~23. Dot and line-shaped melanophores were distributed in a row in the ventral portion of the abdominal cavity, and melanophores appeared on the caudal fin. When post-flexion larval stage (17.23~21.73 mm SL, n=20), all fin rays appeared, and the number of pectoral, pelvic, anal and dorsal fin rays were 7~9, 4~5, 29~31 and 14~15, respectively. Dot and line-shaped melanophores were distributed in a row from the posterior of the preopercle to the ventral portion of the abdominal cavity, oval-shaped melanophores were distributed along the anal fin base, and melanophores concentrated lower lobe of the caudal fin. When juvenile stage (18.43~25.98 mm SL, n=45), the number of pectoral, pelvic, anal and dorsal fin rays were completed as 12~15, 7~8, 30~33 and 14~15, respectively. Point-shaped melanophores of the ventral position of the abdominal cavity disappeared, it continued in a row along the anal fin base to the lower caudal peduncle. Our results suggest that Thryssa kammalensis may use the sea around Chilsan-do Island as spawning and/or nursery ground between June and July.
