  • This study was mainly focused on the development of GIS based decision support system to easily make mitigation scenarios and to conveniently simulate water quality for TMDL. The study area was the 31km section of upper Sapgyo stream in Geum river basin, and QUAL2E model was adopted. GIS DB was built through the collection of the data which includes point/non-point source attributes and various thematic maps. The amounts of discharged loads of BOD, T-N and T-P from unit watershed were estimated respectively. Finally, the system, which can operate water quality simulation through simply modifying their values, was developed. The hypothetical three mitigation scenarios were applied, thereby the most efficient mitigation scenario could be chosen by comparison of the results based on GIS. Therefore, it is expected that the developed system can facilitate the decision makers to select the best alternative through the analysis of the available BMPs. Also, it can be used to develop new scenarios using different methods and algorithms. In the future, more study need to be made to enhance its applicability in the perspective of developing mitigation scenarios through the management of individual pollutant sources and extending study areas.

  • This study focused on coastal water quality response to land-based and sediment pollution loads and estimation of the carrying capacity in Masan Bay using an ecological model with the data in summer of 2002. A residual current was simulated to have a slightly complicated pattern with ranging from 0.1 to 1.5 cm/s. In Masan Bay, pollutant materials cannot flow from the inner to the outer bay easily because of residual currents flow southward at surface and northward at the bottom. The simulation results of COD distribution showed high concentrations over 3 mg/L in the inner part of Masan Bay related pollutant discharge. For improvement seawater quality grade I in Masan Bay, it is necessary to reduce the organic and inorganic loads from point sources by more than 80%. For improvement seawater quality grade II, it is necessary to reduce the organic and inorganic loads from point sources by more than 50% and ameliorate severe polluted sediment. The carrying capacity for COD is 2.32 ton/day and 7.16 ton/day for each grade.

  • The environmental capacity and watershed pollution load reduction of Yongdam reservoir were estimated by the simulation of water quality variation process with the target water quality establishment, pollution load estimation and flow analysis. The potable raw water $I{\sim}II$, COD $1.0{\sim}3.0$ mg/L and TP $0.01{\sim}0.03$ mg/L were selected as the target water quality Yongdam reservoir water quality model was constructed with WASP5 contained 42 segments and the correlation of calibrated results were BOD 0.73, $PO_4-P$ 0.98. The environmental capacity for target quality COD 2.0 mg/L and TP 0.02 mg/L were BOD $131,880{\sim}4,694$ kg/d, TP $7,855 {\sim}167$ kg/d which were less than exists, and the related reduction ratios were BOD $51{\sim}62%$, TP $47{\sim}67%$ which were middle amount in exists. The load reduction ratios to meet the potable raw water $I{\sim}II$ were BOD $72{\sim}16%$, TP $78{\sim}36%$ in existing conditions and BOD $81{\sim}44%$, TP $84{\sim}52%$ in new conditions. BOD was the least one and TP was the second least in 4 results. The effects of the load reduction assignment to subbasin were dominant in TP but little in COD.

  • For effective management of water quality on the southern coast of korea, a three-dimensional eco-hydrodynamic model is used to predict water quality in summer and to estimate the reduction rate in pollutant loads that would be required to restore water quality. Under the current environmental conditions, in particular, pollutant loadings to the study area were very high, chemical oxygen demand (COD) exceeded seawater quality criteria to comply with current legislation, and water quality was in a eutrophic condition. Therefore, we estimated reduction rates of current pollutant loads by modeling. The model reproduced reasonably the flow field and water quality of the study area. If the terrestrial COD, inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus loads were reduced by 90%, the water quality criteria of Region A were still not satisfied. However, when the nutrient loads from polluted sediment and land were each reduced by 70% simultaneously, COD and $Chl-{\alpha}$ were restored. When we reduced the input COD and nutrient loads from the Nakdong River by 80%, $Chl-{\alpha}$ and COD of Region B decreased below $10\;{\mu}g\;1^{-1}$ and $2\;mg\;1^{-1}$, respectively. The water quality criteria of Region C were satisfied when we reduced the terrestrial COD and nutrient loads by 70%. Total allowable loadings of COD and inorganic nutrients in each region were determined by multiplying the reduction rates by current pollutant loads. Estimated high reduction rates, although difficult to achieve at the present time under the prevailing environmental conditions, suggest that water pollution is very severe in this study area, and pollutant loads must be reduced within total allowable loads by continuous and long-term management. To achieve the reduction in pollutant loads, sustainable countermeasures are necessary, including the expansion of sewage and wastewater facilities, polluted sediment control and limited land use.

  • In This study, an attempt has been made to build a land use appraisal model as a basis for assessing the abatement effectiveness of airpollution within Seoul city due to nitrogen oxides emitted from motor trucks. Furthermore, the model is used to predict the city's traffic volum and its validity in ascertained by comparing it with the actual recorded traffic volume data. Through a series of land use planning alternatives established in this study, the abatement effective-ness of Seoul city is assessed.
