While social desirability has been neglected in the field of social work research in Korea, social work articles published in foreign journals have tried to identify respondents with a high level of social desirability and to control the effect of social desirability. The Social Desirability Scale (SDS-24) is the first social desirability scale developed by a Korean research is composed of two factors, self deception and impression management. This study was conducted to improve its practicability by evaluating its psychometric properties with social work practitioners and students. The findings of this study are satisfactory. The factor structure of the Social Desirability Scale (SDS-24) was confirmed and its reliability and validity were satisfactory. The advantage of the Social Desirability Scale (SDS-24) is that it includes items related to Korean culture. The ways of using Social Desirability Scale (SDS-24) in social work research are provided.
This study aimed to explore factors which can predict interpersonal tolerance and intolerance. Specifically, the study examined whether tolerance and intolerance would be explained by demographic variables, social desirability, empathy (cognitive empathy and affective empathy), fear of compassion for others, social trust, and zero-sum belief. Participants in the study were 445 adults (218 males and 227 females) who completed an online survey. Data were analyzed by using hierarchical regression analyses to control the effects of demographic variables and social desirability. The results indicated that tolerance was explained by gender, subjective socioeconomic status, social desirability, cognitive empathy, and social trust. In addition, intolerance was predicted by social desirability, fears of compassion for others, and zero-sum belief. It means that the constructs of tolerance and intolerance are distinct, and different factors predict tolerance and intolerance, respectively. Therefore, it would be necessary to develop realistic ways to promote tolerance and to prevent intolerance at the same time in order to achieve co-existence in a multicultural and diverse society.
This study has two objectives. First, it examines the relationship between organizational trust and error management culture. Second, it also examines the effect of social workers' perceived work value on the combined model by considering the unique characteristics of social work profession and social desirability. This study employs the stratified sampling method on social workers with more than two year work experiences in their current social service agencies that are located in Seoul and Kyungki province; finally it analyzes the responses from 564 social workers by using the method of multiple regression modeling. This study has the following results: (1) there is a causal relationship between social desirability and organizational trust perceived by social workers; (2) there is a positive causal relationship between social workers' perceived work value and organizational trust; and (3) there is also a positive causal relationship between factor structure of error management culture and organizational trust. This study discusses the theoretical and practical implications of the results.
This study investigated the relationship between the physical features and personality impression of faces. Subjects were exposed to male and female facial photographic images. Using 7-points scales, subjects were asked to rate 31 personality traits. The three factors extracted from factor analysis were labeled social desirability, activity, and intelligence. The analysis of correlation between physical features and factor scores of faces indicated that there is a significant correlation between features of eye of male faces and intelligence and between features of chin of female faces and intelligence and social desirability. These results suggested that subjects judged the personality impression, based on different physical features in male and female feces.
This purposed of this study was to investigate the effect of empathy on social justice commitment from a social-cognitive perspective. Specifically, we examined how cognitive and affective empathy affect social justice commitment through social justice self-efficacy, social justice outcome expectation, and social justice interest which represent a social-cognitive path of behavior. Based on the self-report survey sample of 537 people in their twenties, we first controlled social desirability, and then analyzed the measurement and structure model using Structure Estimate Modeling(SEM). As a result, it turned out that both cognitive and affective empathy indirectly affected social justice commitment through the path of the social-cognitive model. However, affective empathy had a larger effect size compared to cognitive empathy. Results suggest that empathy competence has an effect on not only general altruistic behavior as known before but also social justice behavior which include the value of equality and anti-discrimination. Finally, ways for facilitating social justice commitment in terms of cognitive and affective empathy were suggested.

This study investigates the influence of social desirability to questionnaire response and data analysis in order to identify the need for social desirability control in clothing consumer research. A questionnaire measuring social desirability, social face sensitivity, clothing shopping behavior, and demographic characteristics was developed. Responses of 234 respondents were analyzed using factor analysis, simple regression analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, descriptive analysis, and Cronbach's alpha analysis. The results were as follow. First, respondents were influenced by social desirability when they responded to items measuring other-conscious social face. Second, the result of regression analysis (that the independent variable was social formality) was less influenced by social desirability control because the influence of social desirability to social formality was insignificant. Conversely, the result of regression analysis (that the independent variable was other-conscious social face) was more influenced by social desirability control because the influence of social desirability to other-conscious social face was significant. This study is an initial study that notices the need for social desirability control in clothing consumer research.
The purpose of present study is to investigate what is the most important factor among personality, social relation perception, and cultural influence on North Korean Defectors' self-enhancement bias, and how their self-enhancement bias influences on their psychological adaptation in South Korea. To implement this, we compared the self-enhancement bias of South Korean undergraduates and North Korean Defector undergraduates, and social desirability, too. However, there was no significant result. Based on this outcome, we focused on 121 North Korean Defectors' self-enhancement bias mechanism. We found that personality and social relation perception factors influenced significantly on their self- enhancement bias and furthermore their self-enhancement bias affected on their psychological adaptation. In addition to this, we identified sex difference at this mechanism. That is, women showed the same pattern with the existing findings in the study of self-enhancement bias mechanism, but men showed somewhat different pattern.
Increasing evidence shows that ageist attitudes towards older adults develop quite early in childhood in Western culture, yet, empirical research on this topic in Korea is lacking. It has been argued that as Korea has become more youth oriented, negative views of aging have emerged and Korean children are increasingly exposured to negative stereotypes of older adults. Nuclearization of family structure and consequent reduction of intergenerational interaction is considered to be another important factor. The purpose of this study is to find out whether Korean children have ageist attitudes. Acknowledging the possibility that children tend to report in socially appropriate ways to the explicit measures of ageism, we included implicit measures of ageism. Data was collected from 570 fourth to sixth grade elementary school children selected by quota sampling. The current study used Child-Age Implicit Association Test and two other explicit measurements. The original versions were modified to be culturally applicable to the Korean context. Results indicated that when measured explicitly, children do not report preferring younger person than older person. However when measured implicitly, it was found that children at this young age already reveal negative biases toward the elderly. Contrast to the fact that the level of explicit ageism is significantly different by demographic characteristics of children, no statistical difference in the level of implicit ageism is detected. Based on the results, implications are discussed.

This study analyzed some of the discrepancies in quantitative and qualitative data focusing on cognitive and affective achievement in science education. Academic and affective achievement score of 308 high school students were collected as quantitative data, and 33 students were interviewed for qualitative data. We examined the causes and types of discrepancies in terms of testing tools. As a result from quantitative data, there were a large number of students with a big difference between subjects in cognitive achievement, and constructs in affective achievement. More than 20% of the students did not match tendency between achievements in two areas. Through interviews, some examples such as intentional control of science learning for future study and careers, different responses by differences in perception between school science and science, appeared. A comparison of quantitative data by testing tool between qualitative ones and interviews showed conflicting result, where most students evaluated themselves differently from their own quantitative data. That is due to the students' interaction with the testing tools. Two types of discrepancy related to testing tool are found. One is 'the concept difference between the item developer and students,' the other is 'the difference between students' exposed response and their real mindset.' These are related to the ambiguity of the terms used in the tool and response bias due to various causes. Based on this study, an effort is required to elaborate the testing item that matches students' actual perception and to apply students' science learning experience to testing items.
