Further, marital satisfaction and social support showed 'large effect size' and life satisfaction, family relations and functions, self-esteem, psychological well-being, and depression showed 'near large effect size.' Third, when moderating effect was examined, Korean language proficiency, economic difficulty, depression, and self-esteem among individual variables showed differences in effect size according to socio-economic variables. • This study aimed to explore factors which can predict interpersonal tolerance and intolerance. Specifically, the study examined whether tolerance and intolerance would be explained by demographic variables, social desirability, empathy (cognitive empathy and affective empathy), fear of compassion for others, social trust, and zero-sum belief. Participants in the study were 445 adults (218 males and 227 females) who completed an online survey. Data were analyzed by using hierarchical regression analyses to control the effects of demographic variables and social desirability. The results indicated that tolerance was explained by gender, subjective socioeconomic status, social desirability, cognitive empathy, and social trust. In addition, intolerance was predicted by social desirability, fears of compassion for others, and zero-sum belief. It means that the constructs of tolerance and intolerance are distinct, and different factors predict tolerance and intolerance, respectively. Therefore, it would be necessary to develop realistic ways to promote tolerance and to prevent intolerance at the same time in order to achieve co-existence in a multicultural and diverse society.

  • This study classified the predictors affecting the life satisfaction level of married immigrant women into socio-demographic factors (age, education, personal system factors (Korean proficiency, self-rated health, depressed mood, multicultural attitude), family system factors (spouse relationship satisfaction, child relationship satisfaction, couple conversation time, decision-making status), and social factors (social support, social capital, experience of social discrimination, multicultural family support center use) based on ecosystem perspectives and comprehensively examined their effects. The data for 14,464 married immigrant women from the National Survey on Multicultural Families 2015 were analyzed through hierarchical multiple regression. The findings of this study are as follow. First, the results indicated that all ecosystem factors- that is personal, family, and social system factors-significantly affected life satisfaction level of married immigrant women and especially personal and family system factors increased the predictability on their satisfaction. Second, among all predictors, spouse relationship satisfaction was the factor most strongly associated with life satisfaction. Finally, the income variable among socio-demographic factors, depression among personal system factors, spouse relationship satisfaction among family system factors, and experience of social discrimination among social system factors all showed the strongest significant effects on the life satisfaction level of married immigrant women. These results suggest that comprehensive factors based on the ecosystem perspectives to intervene and promote the life satisfaction of married immigrant women should be considered.

  • The unexpected increase of violent crimes in Korea urges people to look for more dynamic explanations of criminal behavior other than sociological eugenics such as a struggle between social classes or assimilation to deviant social environment. In this study, criminal behavior is treated as personal matter according to the tradition of psychological theories of crime rather than sociological phenomenon. Furthermore, aggression is supposed to be one of the most basic dispositional characteristics of violent acts. Therefore, this study explored the relationship between aggression measured by BPAQ and criminality evaluated based on seriousness of criminal offenses. On the other hand, the cross-validity of BPAQ was also investigated since prevalence and expressive forms of violence is known to vary across cultures and even within a society. The variance analyses and causal modeling presented that BPAQ had satisfactory level of cross-validity and dispositional aggression measured by BPAQ might have causal effect on criminality of Korean offenders. Additionally, a theoretical internal structure of BPAQ had been confirmed to be reasonable by confirmatory factor analyses.
