  • This study was conducted to investigated the effects of stocking density on growth and survival of sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus in the indoor multiple tank for 12 weeks. There were six treatments(stocking densities) in this experiment, i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 individuals per 10 L plastic aquarium($W41{\times}H24{\times}D11cm$, represented as D1, D2, D3, D4, D5 and D10, respectively). Each treatment had ten replicates. The results showed growth variation of sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus decreased with the increase of stocking densities. After the end of the experiment, no significant differences(P>0.05) between D1~D5 treatment group whereas significant differences(P<0.05) between D1 and D10 treatment group. Survival rate showed D1~D10 were 90%, 90%, 100%, 95%, 94% and 72%, respectively. Especially, significant differences(P>0.05) between D1~D5 and D10 treatment group. The results indicated optimum of stocking density for sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus within five individuals per 10 L plastic aquarium($0.05individuals/m^2$).

  • For the effective seedling production of the hard shelled mussel, Mytilus coruscus, this study assessed the effects of the dietary value of live food, density, water temperature and salinity on growth and survival rate of the larvae. The optimal survival rate and growth rate were examined under differing conditions of water temperature, salinity, and rearing density for 30 days. The three groups were provided different feeding organisms, such as Isochrysis galbana and Teleaulax suecica. The mixtures were provided at a rate of $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$. The best growth was observed in the group with conditions $21^{\circ}C$ water temperature ($16.2{\pm}9.1{\mu}m$), 33 psu of salinity ($16.82{\pm}3.9{\mu}m$), $2500individual\;m^{-2}$ ($17.2{\pm}5.9{\mu}m$), and fed with $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$ of I. galbana and T. suecica mixture ($16.0{\pm}7.3{\mu}m$). The highest survival rate was found in the group at conditions $18^{\circ}C$ water temperature (66.4%), 33 psu of salinity (24.4%), $2500individual\;m^{-2}$ (65.8%), and fed with $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$ of I. galbana and T. suecica mixture (58.8%). We therefore conclude that the suitable culture conditions for the stable production of hard shelled mussel artificial seedlings was at 18 to $21^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 30 to 33 psu of salinity, 2500 to $5000individual\;m^{-2}$ of rearing density, and feeding supplement of $5{\times}10^4cell\;mL^{-1}$ of I. galbana and T. suecica mixture under semi running water system.

  • We performed three sets of feeding trials to establish the optimal feed size (Exp-I), stocking density (Exp-II), and dissolved oxygen level (DO) (Exp-III) for olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. In Exp-1, four replicate groups of fish ($53.6{\pm}0.9g$) were fed commercial diets with three particle sizes (small, medium, and large). In Exp-II, fish ($30.0{\pm}0.1g$) were reared at four stocking densities (1.8, 3.5, 5.3, and $7.1kg/m^3$). In Exp-III, fish ($187{\pm}1.48g$) were reared under two different DO levels (2-3 and 6-7 mg/L). In Exp-I, fish fed the large-particle diet gained significantly more weight and had a lower feed conversion ratio than fish fed the small- and medium-particle diets. In Exp-II, fish reared at 1.8 and $3.5kg/m^3$ gained slightly more weight and had lower feed conversion ratios than fish reared at 5.3 and $7.1kg/m^3$, although these differences were not significant. In Exp-III, negative effects were observed in the low DO groups. Therefore, under our experimental conditions, the optimal feed particle size, stocking density, and DO level for olive flounder were 9-9.4 mm, $3.5kg/m^3$, and 6-7 mg/L, respectively.

  • 1. The heat output by the insects, Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Tribolium confusum, Sitophilus zeamais and Sitophilus granarius, was investigated by reading the temperature of the inside of the grain in which the insects were developing in 2 Ib or 7 Ib jars incubated at $25^{\circ}C\; and\; 70\%$ R.H. 2. All the insects tested increase the temperature of grain, but the amount of heat produced by insects varies with the species of and the developmental stages of the insects. 3. It was found that all the temperature peaks correspond with the peak in number of the fourth instar larvae and the period in which the insects start to cause the heating corresponds to its 1 st and 2nd instar larvae. 4. Sitophilus spp. whose larvae live in the endosperm of the wheat produced more heat than Tribolium confusum and Oryzaephilus surinamensis whose larvae live on the grain. 5. Among the four species of insects, Sitophilus zeamais Produces the highest heat, followed by Sitophilus granarius, Tribolium confusum and Oryzaephilus surinamensis. 6. It is considered from the above results that the heat produced by insects seems to depend upon the species, the number and the age structure of population, and its its surroundings. 7. It is suggested therefore that when comparing the rate of development of insects kept at different densities. the effects caused by heating at the higher densities must be considered.

  • In order to investigate a reasonable rearing density and the possibility of high-density rearing, flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, juveniles of 2.53$\pm$0.24 cm in total length and 1.12$\pm$0.12 cm in body height were used in this study. The initial rearing density of them was 10 (D10), 20 (D20), 30 (D30) and 40 (D40) individuals per 137.75 $cm^2$ of bottom area, respectively. Ranges of water temperature and specific gravity during the rearing period of 65 days were $21.0\~27.0^{\circ}C$ and 1.024$\~$1.026, respectively, showing relatively higher values than that of natural sea water. Dissolved oxygen during the rearing period was 5.4$\~$7.5 ml/$\iota$ and inorganic nitrate was 0.07$\~$0.48 ppm in $NH_4^+-N$, 0.006$\~$0.33 ppm in $NO_2^{-}-N$ and 3.89$\~$34.06 ppm in $NO_3^{-}-N$. Growth in total length and body height of the juveniles in four rearing density at the end of the experiment was 8.17$\pm$0.80 em and 4.16$\pm$0.39 em, the highest in D20 and 7.72$\pm$0.40 cm and 3.94$\pm$0.21 cm, the lowest in D10. Significant differences, however, were not recognized between the slope values of growth regressions in four rearing density. Slope values of the relative growth between total length and body height of the juveniles in four rearing density were 0.5346, the highest in D10 and 0.5165, the lowest in D30, but there were no significant differences in those values. Survival rate of juveniles at the end of the experiment was $90\%$ in D10, D20 and D30, but that of D40 was $75\%$. The relationship between total length X body height (X) and body surface area of ocular side (Y) to calculate the rate of Y to bottom area in rearing tank (covering rate) as an indicator of rearing density was expressed by a linear regression, Y=0.5994X+0.1840. Covering rate in four rearing density at the end of the experiment was ranged 1.2$\~$4.1 times. Judging from the covering rate above 4 times, it seems to be possible rearing the flounder juveniles in high-density.

  • In order to know the effects of rearing conditions such as water temperature, salinity, larval stocking density, kinds and amounts of food organism and seedling collection method on seedling production of the brackish water clam, Corbicula japonica, the growth and survival rate of the larvae were investigated at each rearing condition. The shell length of larvae showed faster growth at $24^{\circ}C$ and $27^{\circ}C$, and survival rate showed good results at $18^{\circ}C$ and $21^{\circ}C$. Based on growth and survival rate according to water temperature, the optimal water temperature for larvae rearing was $24^{\circ}C$. At the salinity of more than 3 psu, the growth and survival rate were higher than 0 psu. The optimal salinities for larvae were 6-9 psu. Growth and survival rate of larvae were high at low stocking density and the optimum stocking density of larvae was 10 inds./ml. Daily feeding concentrations of 10,000-20,000 cell/ml of food organisms mixed Pavolva lutheri, Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans were very effective. Full grown larvae collection from various substratum was significantly higt in sand, especially sand size was less than 0.25 mm.

  • Interest in edible insects such as Protaetia brevitarsis has increased rapidly, and several insect producers use these insects in industrialized mass production. However, mass rearing of insects can cause insect diseases. Sprouted barley is a valuable source of nutrients and has antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of sprouted barley as a feed additive for producing healthy P. brevitarsis larvae. P. brevitarsis larvae were fed feeds with or without sprouted barley, and their body weight and larval period wewe checked weekly. To confirm the antibacterial effects of sprouted barley, in vitro bioassays were performed by counting Serratia marcescens colonies, and in vivo bioassays were performed by determining the survival rate and body weights of the S. marcescens-infected larvae. Larvae fed different feeds were analyzed for their nutrient compositions (i.e., such as proximate composition, minerals, amino acids, and heavy metals). Larvae fed 5% and 10% sprouted barley had maximum weight increases of 19.2% and 23.1%, respectively. Both treatment groups had significantly shorter larval periods than those of the control group. Sprouted barley markedly inhibited the growth of entomopathogenic S. marcescens. Furthermore, larvae fed sprouted barley exhibited higher Cu, Zn, and K levels. Seventeen amino acids were present in larvae fed sprouted barley, of which, tyrosine and glutamic acid were predominant. No heavy metals were detected in any of the investigated groups. Therefore, sprouted barley may be a suitable feed additive for producing high-quality P. brevitarsis larvae.

  • In this study, the effects of dietary krill meal levels on cellular immunity in LPS-injected broiler chicks was evaluated. One day-old male broiler chicks(Ross) were fed on the experimental basal meal(0.0% krill meal), or diets containing 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% krill for 3 weeks, and the acute phase response was activated by intraperitoneally injection of Salmonella typhimurium lipopolysaccharide(LPS) 3 times at 9, 11, and 13 days of age. 1. Acute phase response induced a significant reduction in(p<0.05) daily weight gain and feed intake, and increases in liver and spleen weight. However, it was not affected by dietary krill meal levels. 2. The krill meal diets reduced TNF-α activity as compared to the basal diet after 24 hours (acute phase response) and 1 week(recovery from the acute phase response) following LPS injection (p<0.05). The acute phase response induced a significant increase(p<0.05) in TNF-α activity relative to the control in chicks fed on a basal diet, but this was also unaffected by dietary krill meal levels. 3. Acute phase response-mediated ovotransferrin levels(relative to what was measured in the control bird) were increased in birds fed on the basal, 1.0% and 2.0% krill diets, and were reduced in birds fed on the 0.5 % krill diet. 4. In LPS-injected chicks, 1.0% and 2.0% krill meal diets induced a significant reduction in(p<0.05) the Con A-induced proliferation of PBMC and splenocytes relative to what was observed in the chicks fed on a 0.5% krill diet, whereas the splenocytes proliferated in a linear fashion with the krill levels in the diets of the control birds. The results showed that the dietary levels of krill meal reduced TNF-α activity in the blood and also influenced blood ovotransferrin levels and the proliferation of PBMC and splenocytes, and krill meal is considered to be associated with both innate and cellular immunity in broiler chicks.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the mixing ratio of raw feed materials for the methane mitigation and also to identify the minimum rearing density for improving the productivity of beef calves as eco-friendly fodder. Raw materials used in this study for the formulation of feed for methane reduction were crushed corn and alfalfa along with other 21 species. In addition, to investigate the appropriate rearing density, 12 Hanwoo calves with average weight of 150 kg was selected and experiment was conducted for four months. Methane gas emission (Bo) is about 3-4 times less in TMR 4 compared to TMR 1, 2 and 3. Feed price calculated for TMR 4 ration was also affordable. In addition, all TMRs showed a normal ruminal pH. Disappearance rate was observed to be lower in TMR 4 as compared to TMR 1, 2 and 3, but methane production decreased by 24 to 37%. The result showed improved total body weight, average daily gain and feed conversion ratio in rearing low-density ($18m^2/head$), and general treatment ($9m^2/head$) compared to overcrowding treatment ($6m^2/head$). In addition, blood components (total protein, glucose, AST, ALT and GGT factors) involved in health and disease treatments and health-related nutrition metabolism are lower in the low-density and general treatment compared to the high density treatment. Postural development (development of body size) i.e., weight, height and width significantly increased in the low and general density treatment compared to high density treatment. Especially excellent improvement was observed in low-density treatment than the general treatment. Moisture content, colonic bacteria and coccidium are higher in low and high density treatments than in the general treatment. The adequacy for beef rearing density is considered to be more desirable in an area more than $6m^2/head$. In conclusion, present study suggests that possibility of methane reduction through adjusting mixed feed ration. Also, rearing density is also an important factor in the growth and development of beef calves.

  • We studied the characteristics of odor emitted from 40 swine facilities across the country under various conditions like rearing densities, management style, ventilation system and swine manure handling characteristics, based on the olfactory and analytical evaluation. Odor concentrations (D/T) measured from swine facilities were respectively an average 4,055 D/T at liquid manure storage tanks on aeration, an average 913 D/T at slurry manure storage, an average 506 D/T at finishing swine facilities and an average 201 D/T at composting facilities. The higher rearing densities and slurry accumulation volume in finishing swine house, the more odor concentration (D/T) was increased. But The odor concentration (D/T) in finishing swine house did not show significant difference according to application of microbial additives. 9 odor compounds ($NH_3$, $H_2S$, MM, DMS, DMDS, PA, n-BA, n-VA, i-VA) were detected at swine facilities and the main odor compounds were volatile sulfur compounds such as $H_2S$, MM and volatile fatty acids compounds such as n-BA, n-VA, i-VA. 97.5% of swine farms surveyed in this study is located within 300 m of residential area and it is easy to bring odor complaints.
