  • TYME is an interactive typography program based on the ephemeral nature of time. It is a text based poetic tool, built with Processing. This project is presented as a performance that utilizes a computer with a display screen, a projector, and speakers. As the user types, white characters appear, flow on the score on the screen and trigger jazz sounds, then characters disappear into black space in several seconds on the screen like smoke. Typography from this invented instrument is evocative and wistful, and allows the user to associate with ephemeral time. While typing the characters as though playing an instrument at intervals of time, the user can freeze the motion and print out or save otherwise fleeting moment with a button. I intend to contain both characteristics: the amorphous shape of smoke and the elusive attribute of smoke for the expression of intangible and ephemeral time. Every alphabetic shape is derived from the video dips that I shot of smoke. The resulting alphabetic images are then programmed using the Processing scripting language and which can then be typed on the screen with a keyboard. TYME could be a model as a project that reflects the unfixed quality of digital typography, and as a design approach for interactive expressive typography by scripting code. This project also represents the characteristics of typographic play, which can be realized in an computational environment like this model.

  • The new HDTV technologies provide crystal clear images and surrounding sounds for broadcasting screen in order to serve higher quality of broadcasting. They have four times the resolution of conventional TV and handle 16:9 wide screen aspect ratio images. Due to such technological shift, the function of Character Graphic has been particularly revaluated: it used to be only a subsidiary method to literally deliver visual images, but nowadays it is considered one of the essential elements capable of giving higher values to broadcasting programs. And there is an urgent need for changing its attributes such as fonts, sizes, colors, moving speeds to fit to bigger screen ratio and much more qualified images of HDTV. To meet such a need, Delphi surveys are made twice with three groups of TV production staffs: Art Directors, CG Designers and Production & Transmission team, these groups which are divided on the basis of their roles in broadcasting production process. With the results of these surveys, this article analyzes how all of the attributes of Character Graphic have affected the media users' Visual Perception, and then, suggests a new format designed in OSMU(One Source Multi Use) by which TV character graphics can be properly transmitted to various media formats.

  • Image presentation ways have recently been growing, and hologram, which is one of the next generation image presentation methods, has been developed through a lot of researches, but it is difficult to embody. Therefore, a similar hologram method has been used for different multimedia contents to present the hologram-like effects. This paper intends to investigate ways to effectively use a floating hologram method as one of the pseudo hologram methods to apply to interactive multimedia contents. It also aims to produce works applying a motion sensor to contents of a boxed form using the floating hologram method while studying real-time interaction between sound and image presented from audience's participation to provide researches on advantages and disadvantages of utilizing hologram and the technology while suggesting complementary methods on them.
