A vegetation survey was conducted and analyzed on 25 survey plots of Betula ermanii communities in the subalpine zone of Mt. Gariwang, Mt. Balwang, Mt. Bangtae, and Mt. Hambaek in Gangwon-do. As a result of TWINSPAN and DCA analysis, the community was divided into a total of 3 communities: Betula ermanii-Quercus mongolica community(GroupI), Betula ermanii-Acer pseudosieboldianum community (GroupII), and Betula ermanii community(GroupIII). As a result of the vegetation structure analysis, Betula ermanii-Quercus mongolica community(GroupI) is located on the periphery of the Mt. Bangtae trail at altitude of 1,082~1,192m, and Betula ermanii-Acer pseudosieboldianum community(GroupII) is located on the ridges and slopes of Mt. Bangtae, Mt. Gariwang, and Mt. Hambaek at altitudes of 1,230~1,373m. Betula ermanii-Quercus mongolica community(GroupI) and Betula ermanii-Acer pseudosieboldianum community(GroupII) are currently dominated by Betula ermanii, but after long term, it is expected that they will transe to Quercus mongolica. The Betula ermanii community(GroupIII) is located the summit of Mt. Hambaek and the summit of Mt. Balwang at altitude of 1,428~1,464m. It is expected that the community will be maintained as Betula ermanii community, because Betula ermanii is very dominant, and so the next generation dominant species is maintained by Betula ermanii. Betula ermanii community generally appear above 1,000 m above sea level, and the higher the altitude, the more dominant the Betula ermanii are. As a result of the soil analysis, the soil characteristics shows a similar pattern to the subalpine belt of Daecheongbong Peak of Mt. Seoraksan and Banyabong Peak of Mt. Jirisan. As a result of the species diversity index analysis, the species diversity index was 1.210~1.293, the abundance index was 0.698~0.795, and the dominance index was 0.208~0.302.
To investigate the vegetation structure of subalpine region from Hyangjeukbong to 2nd Deogyusan, 20 plots(100$m^2$) set up with random sampling method were surveyed. Three groups Quercus mongolica community, Betula ermanii - Picea jezoensis - Taxus cuspidata community, Taxus cuspidata - Qurecus mongolica - Betula ermanii community were classified by cluster analysis. Quercus mongolica, Taxus cuspidata and Betula ermanii were found as a major woody plant species in the subalpine region from Hyangjeukbong to 2nd Deogyusan. In this area, Korean endemic species, Abies koreana was distributed small amounts. In future, importance percentage of Abies koreana might be decreased, but that of Betula ermanii might be increased. High positive correlations was proved between Betula ermanii and Rhododendron schlippenbachii, Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum ; Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes and Acer mono; Syringa velutina and Magnolia sieboldii and relatively high negative corrlations was proved between Betular ermani and Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes ; Quercus mongolica and Acer mono; Abies koreana and Tripterygium regelii, Weigela subsessilis. Species diversity(H') of investigated groups were ranged 1.0316∼1.1776 and it was similar to those of the ridge area of the national parks in Baekdudaegan.

Three groups - Quercus mongolica- Abies holophylla community, Acer mandshuricum- Abies nebhrolepis community, Abies holophylla-Ulmus laciniata-were classified by cluster analysis. High positive correlations were proved between Ulmus laciniata and Carpinus cordata; Tripterygium regelii and Syringa reticulata var. mandshurica ; Tripterygium regelii and Rhodo- dendron brachycarpum ; Carpinus cordata and Rhododenron mucronulatm; Wergela subsessilis and Rhododenron nucronulatum and High negative correlations were proved between Rhododen- dron schippenbachii and Euonymus macroptera; Betula ermani and Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Tilia amurensis, Magnolia sieboldii, Betula costata ; Pinus pumila and Pinus koraiensis. Species diversity(H') of investigated area was calculated 0.8393~1.3431.
To investigate the structure and the conservation strategy of natural forest at Taech'ongbong-Hangyeryong Area in Soraksan. 45 plots(20m*20m) set up with random sampling method were surveted. Four groups - Quercus mongolica - Acer pseudosieboldianum community, Avies nephrolepis - Tilia amurensis - Quercus mongolica community, Abies nephrolepis - Taxus cuspidata community, Abies nephrolepis - Qurecusmongolica community - were classified by cluster analysis. High positive correlations were proved between Abies nephrolepis and Betula ermanii; Abies nephrolepis and Pinus pumila; Aies nephrolepis and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum; Betula ermanii and Pinus pumila; Betula ermanii and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum; Pinus pumila and Rhododendron mucronulatm var. ciliatum; Quercus mongolica and Rhododendron schlippenbachii; Quercus mongolica and Qeigela subsessilis; Euonymus macroptera and Syringa reticulata; Euonymus macroptera and Viburnum wrightii; Acer ukurunduense and Euonymus oxyphyllus, and high nagative correlations were proved between Betula ermanii and Acer pseudosieboldianum; Quercus mongolica and Tripterygium regelii; Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Tripterygium regelii; Carpinus cordata and Acer pseudosieboldianum. Species diversity(H') of investigated area was calculated 2.1352~2.8016.
Vegetational data obtained from 24 quadrats of Mt. Paekdu area were analysed by applying two multivariate methods : two-way indicator species analysis(TWIMSPAN) for classification and detrended canonical correspondence analysis(DCCA) for ordination. DCCA technique allowed to extract the ordination axes that could be related to 9 environmental factors. The dominant tree species distributed in the region between 1,700-1,950m from sea level were Betula ermanii, Larix olgensis, Abies nephrolepis, and Picea jezoensis in descending order. The dominant tree species distributed in the region between 1.300-1.500m were Abies nephrolepis, Pinus koraiensis, Larix olgensis, Betula mandshurica, and Picea jezoensis in descending order. The available phosphorus content in forest soil ranged from 7 to 1.153ppm. The distribution of the major communities showed a close relationship with elevation gradient. From high to low elevation, the communities of Alnus fruticosa var. mandshurica, Betula ermanii, Larix olgensis, Abies nephrolepis, Picea jezoensis, Pinus koraiensis, and Quercus mongolica were found in descending order. At the communities where Betula ermanii was dominant, Betula ermanii forest was distributed in the high elevation area, Betula ermanii-Larix olgensis forest in the good nutrition of organic matter and $K^+$, and Abies nephrolepis forest in the good nutrition of $Mg^{{+}{+}}$ and $Ca^{{+}{+}}$. The most dominant factor influencing community distribution was elevation.
This study was carried out to analyze vegetation and soil characteristic, and ordination of subalpine forest vegetation of Daecheongbong area, Mt. Seorak. Communities by characteristic in species composition of subalpine forest were classified into Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermani community group, Pinus pumila, Abies nephrolepis, Thuja koraiensis, and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermanii typical community. The results of the correlation between forest communitie sand soil conditions of Daecheongbong area by DCCA ordination method are as follows: The Pinus pumila community and Thuja koraiensis community were mainly found in the high percentage area of total nitrogen, available phosphorous, organic matter in comparison with Abies nephrolepis community and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermanii typical community. The Abies nephrolepis community and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermanii typical community were mainly found in the high elevation area in comparison with Pinus pumila community and Thuja koraiensis community. The Pinus pumila community and Thuja koraiensis community were mainly found in the northern and northwestern direction, but Abies nephrolepis community and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermanii typical community were mainly found in the southwestern direction.
Among the diffuse-porous woods which arc dominant in Korea and used as construction materials due to their wood quality, ten species of six genus involving seven species of three genus in Betulaceae were studied on the radial variation of structural demenb. The species studied were Betula platyphylla var. japonica, B. ermanii, B. davurica, B. scstata, B. schmidtii, Carpinus laxifora, Alnus japonica, Prunus sargentii. Acer mono and Diospyros kaki. Wood fiber, vessel elements and ray increased rapidly in size from pith to a certain annual ring. After then the radial variation in size of the main structural elements seemed to be divided into three types; levelled off curve pattern indicating constant size(type I), continuously increasing curve pattern showing ever increase in size (type II) and parabolic curve pattern showing the gradual decrease after the maximum (type III), but the variation types by structural dements were different even in the same species. Based on the results from this study, it appears to be reasonable to consider the stabilized age of wood fiber, vessel elements and ray rather than considering wood fiber length in distinguishing mature woods from juvenile woods.

This study was conducted to compare ozone sensitivity among Betula sp. by measuring visible foliar injuries and growth responses. Four Betula sp.(B. costata, B. davurica, B. platyphylla var.japonica and B. ermani) grown in the greenhouse, were transplanted in the plastic pots. One-year-old seedlings of four Betula sp. exposed to relatively high ozone concentration(100 ppb) for 8 h day$^{-1}$ for 5 weeks in fumigation chamber. We measured visible injuries, leaf numbers and leaf areas at the end of experiments, and growth effects were evaluated by measuring the relative growth rate(RGR) of height and diameter and the dry weights of leaf, stem and root once a week. Four Betula species showed the significant differences for growth responses by the ozone treatment. Growths of three species, except for B. ermani, were significantly reduced by the $O_3$ exposure. B. costata with leaf senescence at the early growing stage and B. davurica indicated highest visible foliar injury rate may be the sensitive species at the 100 ppb ozone concentration. Although the growth rate of B. ermani was reduced by 100 ppb ozone exposure at the early growing stage, B. ermani may be a tolerance species that recover the growth rate with the adaptation for the high ozone concentration.
To investigate the structure and the conservation strategy of natural forest at Paekryunsa-Hyangcho kpong area in Tokyusan, 21 plots (400$m^2$) set up with random sampling method. Four groups were classified by cluster analysis. High positive correlations was proved between Tripterygium regelii and Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes, Viburnum sargentii and Betula ermanii, Corylus heterophylla var. thunbergii and Stephanandra incisa, Betula costata and Cornus controversa, Acer mono and Tilia amurensis, Tilia amurensis and Kalopanax pictum, Lonicera maackii and Viburum sargentii, and Betula ermanii, Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes and Taxus cuspidata, and Viburnum sargentii, and High negative correlations was proved between Acer pseudo-sieboldianum and Viburnum sargentii, Tripterygium regelii and Stephanandra incisa, Acer tschonoskii var. rubripes, and Stephanandra incisa. Species diversity(H') of investigated area was calculated 0.9402~1.2473. Taxus cuspidata, Betula ermanii and Abies koreana at Hyangchokpong area in Tokyusan should be conserved.
This study was carried out to classify forest vegetation structure of Sobaeksan National Park from May to October in 2008 using the methodology of the ZM school's phytosociological analysis. The forest vegetation was classified into 1 community groups such as Quercus mongolica community group. Quercus mongolica community group was subdivided into 3 community such as Pinus densiflora community, Acer barbinerve community and Cornus controversa community. Pinus densiflora community was subdivided into Quercus variabilis group and Tilia amurensis group. Acer barbinerve community was also subdivided into Salix hallaisanensis group and Betula ermani group(subdivided into Taxus cuspidata subgroup and Betula ermani typical subgroup). Artificial forest type indicated 2 communities such as Larix leptolepis community and Pinus koraiensis community. Accordingly, the vegetation pattern of the surveyed areas were classified into 1 community groups, 5 communities, 4 groups, and 2 subgroups and the forest vegetation was classified into 8 units in total. The vegetation unit distributions was strongly correlated with sea level and topography in this research area.
