This study investigated the species of leafrollers in apple orchards and nursery farms in Gyeongsangbuk-do for three years from 1998 to 2000, and also examined the occurrence and damage of leafrollers in commercial apple orchards in 5-6 cities and districts for 10 years from 1992 to 2001. Total seven species of tortricidae were found in the apple orchards, which were Adoxophyes orana, Archips breviplicanus, Rhopobota unipunctana, Choristoneura longicellana, Acleris fimbriana, Ptycholoma lecheana circumclusna and Archips subrufanus. Among them, A. orana was dominant species every year, and A. breviplicanus and R. unipunctana occurred with a high density in one or two farms in some years. The dominant species in the 1980s were A. breviplicanus and R. unipunctana, but it was considered that dominant species have been changed in the late 1990s. According to the result of leafroller damage in commercial apple orchards for 10 years, the mean fruit damage rate was $0.67\%$. Fruit damage was observed frequently between August and October by third-generation larvae.
Adoxophyes spp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) are economically important pests of fruit trees in Asia and Europe. The geographical distribution of three Adoxophyes species, A. orana, A. honmai and A. paraorana, in Korea was surveyed using species-specific sex pheromone traps for males in 2006 and 2007. The distribution of A. orana was restricted in the midwestern area, while A. honmai was found mainly in the southern area. In contrast to these two species, A. paraorana was widely distributed. Moreover, A. paraorana coexisted with A. orana in the midwestern area, and with A. honmai in the southern area. The seasonal fluctuation of male catches was monitored with pheromone traps in 2008. In the central regions, males of A. orana and A. paraorana were captured from May to September, with peak numbers in late May, middle July, and late August. A. honmai males were trapped from late April to late September, with peak catches in middle May, late June, early August, and early September in Naju.
This study investigated the efficiency of mating disrupters for the control of Grapholita molesta(Busck) and Adoxophyes orana in pear orchards. G. molesta was shown 4 peak occurrence, which were different according to treatments. In conventional control, many moths were captured in mid and late April and peaks occurred in mid June, August, and early-mid September. In the non-control treatment, there were low populations in April. A. orana also appeared to 4 peak in 2007. Moths were rarely captured in mating disrupter treatment but many were captured in both the non-control and in conventional treatment. A. orana damage differed significantly between mating disrupter use and conventional control in 2006. Especially, the difference was significant between conventional control and mating disrupter to leaf damage in August, and there were similar results in the damage by G. molesta in the shoots and fruits.
A complete control on quarantine insect pests is required for exporting domestic apples to other countries. To this end, a controlled atmosphere and heat treatment system (CATTS) has been developed as a post-harvest treatment. This study determined the CATTS conditions to control completely two lepidopteran insect pests, the smaller tea tortrix moth, Adoxophyes paraorana and the peach pyralid moth, Dichocrocis punctiferalis, which exhibit different feeding behviors. In both species, the fifth instar larvae were the most tolerant developmental stage to the heat treatment. Under CATTS conditions with 15% $CO_2$ and 1% $O_2$ for 1 h heat treatment at $46^{\circ}C$, the fifth instar larvae of A. paraorana exhibited a complete lethality, while those of D. punctiferalis underwent 88% mortality. To control completely the fifth instar larvae of D. punctiferalis, 2 h heat treatment required under the same atmosphere condition. These CATTS treatment effects were confirmed against over 3,000 fifth instar larvae of each species infesting apples. This study demonstrates that the longer exposure to CATTS conditions is required for the complete disinfestation of the internal apple feeder compared to the non-internal apple feeder.
To identity the composition and ratio of the sex pheromone in the asiatic leafroller, Archippus breviplicanus (Walsingham), which is a major pest on apple leaves, and to develop a monitoring system using this sex pheromone, abdominal tips of their virgin female during the calling period were extracted and analysed. The GC/GC-MS analysis revealed the following three compounds; (E)11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14: Ac), (Z)11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14: Ac), and tetradecyl acetate(14: Ac) with the ratio of 56:22:22. Electroantennogram (EAG) assay was also conducted to examine biological activity of the components. The three components evoked significantly higher responses than hexane or air but there was no significant differences between the mixtures made by components. Field trapping experiments for determining the optimum blend, seasonal fluctuation and the optimum amount for male attracting were carried out over 4 years from 1997 to 2000. Although male moths were attracted to 8:2 and 7:3 between E11-14: Ac and Z11-14: Ac, their 7:3 blend was found to be the most effective. Archippus breviplicanus appears to occur three times a year in Korea. The optimum amount for monitoring was found to be 1mg per trap. 14: Ac, the third component, did not show synergistic effect on male moth attraction.

Pheromones of several insect species were evaluated in a screening program in terms of their usefulness in pest forecasting and control in Korea. Species included striped rite borer (Chilo suppressalis) and tortricid moths, which attack deciduous fruit, and colding moth. The pheromone of striped rice borer was supplied through the courtesy of the Tropical Products Institute, London. Pheromones of other species were obtained from Cornell University and the Zoecon Corporation of Palo Alto, California. 'rho results of this experiment were as follows: 1. Live traps containing virgin striped rice borer female moths were more effective in attracting male moths than were the pheromone traps. 2. Since the effectiveness of the striped rice borer pheromone decreased dramatically with time, it was difficult to estimate the peak tine of the borer emergence. 3. The primary species trapped in deciduous fruit orchards was the oriental fruit moth, Grapholitha molesta. The traps were baited with the phermones, OFM and LAW. 4. Several moth species were trapped with OBLR. RBLR. SPAR and ArcM phermones but few were trapped with the remaining eight tortricid pheromones. 5. The following tortricid pheromones might be useful for forecasting the species given: OFM, LAW : Grapholitha molesta OBLR : Archips breviprecanus OBLH, RBLR, ArcM : Archippus coreensis Archips fuscocupreanus Hoshinoa longicellana SPAR, TBM ; Phyroderces sp.
Synthesis and Biological activity test are described for the (E)-11-tetradecen-1-yl acetate and (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-yl acetate, the sex pheromone of the Asiatic leafroller moth (Archippus breviplicanus Walsingham). 10-Bromodecan-1-ol THP ether was prepared from 10-bromodecan-1-ol. In liquid ammonia with THF and HMPA as cosolvents, sodium acetylide could be alkylated with 10-bromodecan-1-al THP ether to give 11-dodecyn-1-ol THP ether. 11-Dodecyn-1-ol THP ether was then treated with n-Buli in THF to give the lithium acetylide, which was alkylated with bromoethane to afford 11-tetradecyn-1-ol THP ether. 11-Tetradecyn-1-ol THP ether was then reduced over $Pd/BaSO_4$ and with Na in liquid $NH_3$ to give (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol THP ether and (E)-11-tetradecen-1-ol THP ether, respectively. (Z)-and (E)-11-Tetradecen-1-ol THP ether thus obtained were deprotected by refluxing in the presence of PPTS and ethanol. (Z)-and (E)-11-tetradecen-1-ol were acetylated with acetic anhydride to afford the final products, (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-yl acetate (1) and (E)-11-tetradecen-1-yl acetate (2), respectively. The synthetic pheromone thus obtained was attractive to the males of the Asiatic leafroller moth in the field.
Peach fruit month, smaller tea tortrix, and Melotontha incana are major pests of apple and apple trees throughout the country. In this work, we examined efficacies of entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema carpocapsae and Steinernema glaseri against these apple pests. Steinernema carpocapsae showed 100% mortality after 24hr against peach fruit moth when it was applied on the larva with the concentration of 80 nematodes per larva, but Steinernema glaseri caused 83.3$\pm$5.8% mortality after 24hr at the concentration of 50 nematodes per larva. In the case of smaller tea tortrix, S. carpocapsae and S. glaseri caused 100%, 43.3$\pm$5.8% at the concentration of 50 nematodes per larva after 48 hr, respectively. However, 5~6 instar of Melotontha incana was not killed by treatments with S. carpocapsae and S.glaseri up to concentration of 200~800 nematodes per larva. The motility of nematodes in a soil increased as both inoculation concentration of nematode per larva and temperature increased. The mortality of G. mellonella by S. carpocapsae was 100% up to 10cm in depth and 56.7$\pm$5.8% at 10~15cm in depth when the temperature was $25^{\circ}C$ and 50 nematodes per larva were used.
We investigated the occurrence of major pests, 4 species of moths (Grapholita dimorpha Busck, Carposina sasakii Matsumura, Archips breviplicanus Walsingham, Adoxophyes orana Fischer von Roslerstamm), apple aphid (Aphis spiraecola Patch), two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) and parasitoids in pear orchard with hairy vetch and cutting weeds in Yesan, Chungnam province during the flowering season and summer depression season of hairy vetch, in 2012 and 2013. The occurrence of 4 species of moths in hairy vetch plot and cutting weeds (major is finger grass, Digitaria sanguinalis, 80%) were little different but in case of apple aphid, the density in hairy vetch plot was just 95 aphids per stem at 20th June but low after then. The density of two spotted spider mite on pear leaf in hairy vetch plot was lower than in cutting weeds plot significantly. The number of parasitoids collected in hairy vetch plot during flowering season (May and June) were 398 and 798 in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The number of parasitoids collected in hairy vetch plot during summer depression season (July and August) were 114 and 172, respectively. But in cutting weeds plot, 9 and 22 in May and June, 8 and 5 in July and August. We didn't know either hairy vetch in pear orchard affected the occurrence of 4 species of moths, apple aphid and two spotted spider mite or not but was acted to be favorable for wasps, the natural enemies on the contrary. The improvement of chemical control systems through the selection of low chemicals to natural enemies with cover and green manure plants would turn effective pest management into a possibility.
