  • This study conducted a comparison analysis of the differences by scope between juvenile delinquents, under sentence of juvenile protective disposition, and normal middle high school boys' self-esteem and sociality; it aims to search for the correctional policy to prevent juvenile delinquency. I conducted a survey, as a sampling target, of students (84) at Daedeok Juvenile Reformatory, located in Daejeon-si, Korea, and the normal middle high school boys (230). The results of analysis showed that in the analysis of self-esteem difference, juvenile delinquents were found high in the global self-esteem and school-academic self-esteem, but the normal adolescents were found high only in the scope of family-parents self-esteem. In leadership, a subordinate scope of sociality, juvenile delinquents showed the high result, and in independence and cooperativity, normal adolescents were found high. In conclusion, as the distinction between self-esteem and sociality is different by scope, depending on the individual's characteristic and environment, it suggests that the correctional policy through the customized plan is effective at preventing delinquency.

  • The physical and psychological weaknesses of delinquent adolescents increase the possibility of socialization and the possibility of social exclusion. Therefore, this study aims to clarify the characteristics of the social exclusion through the Q methodology and to suggest policy and practical intervention directions. For this purpose, 36 statements about social exclusion were conducted through 15 prejudicial adolescents with the prior cooperation of the institution and the consent of the subjects. As a result of the analysis, four types were derived. Type 1 can be named as social disconnect type 'Type 2 is total type', type 3 is 'poverty type' and type 4 is 'service type'. Based on this, it can be said that the characteristics of social exclusion of juvenile delinquents are complexity, inclusivity, individuality, universality.

  • This paper examines the effect of patriarchal family on female delinquency from the perspective of power-control theory, employing various measures for testing the theory. Extending power-control theory, this study measures the concept of 'patriarchal anomie' which implies the situation where girls' progressive views on gender role are in conflict with parents' patriarchal values. In addition, the mediating effects of the delinquent associations and the parental supervision are investigated. The results generally show that a series of variables on patriarchal family have statistically significant effects on female delinquency. Specifically, the variables for patriarchal family measured in terms of parents' occupation and education level significantly decrease female delinquency. This study also finds that girls with patriarchal attitudes are less likely to be delinquent. However, girls with progressive views on gender role living with patriarchal parents are more likely to be delinquent. This study finds that the deterrent effects of patriarchal family as well as the facilitating effect of patriarchal anomie are mediated by delinquent association. And it reports that the variable of patriarchal family measured by parents' occupation decreases female delinquency through parental supervision.

  • This study examines the overall structure among family relationship, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and delinquency of adolescent in single-parent families using structural equation modeling to provide theoretical basis preventable juvenile delinquency. The data of 516 middle and high school students in the research into the promotion policies on children and adolescents' mental health(2012) by the National Youth Policy Institute analysed. The result of this study are: (1) family relationship affects self-efficacy, self-esteem, and delinquency of adolescent, (2) family relationship affects delinquency of adolescent by the mediation of self-esteem, (3) self-efficacy doesn't affect delinquency of adolescent. This study suggests the necessity of both intervention as well as the development implementation of practical methods for the prevention of delinquency of adolescent.

  • The present study was to explore what makes adolescents think of themselves as troublemakers even without conduct problems. It was expected that the failure to attain socio-developmental milestones(e.g., healthy relationships with others, academic achievement) would lead to form trait aspect of deviant self-concept. A latent state-trait autoregressive modeling was used to analyze five annual waves of data from 3,449 adolescents taken from the Korean Youth Panel Study. We decomposed trait and state aspect of deviant self-concept and identified significant predictors of trait-like deviant self-concept, while additionally testing for gender differences. Our results showed that conduct problems had greater effect on deviant self-concept among girls compared with boys. Conduct problem was most predictive of deviant self-concept, and yet both poor peer-relations and school failures predisposed adolescents to have deviant self-concept. Low academic achievement conferred risk for trait aspects of deviant self-concept with no gender difference, whereas poor peer relation was more predictive among girls. It highlights the cultural value system underlying self-concept and how and why adolescents think of themselves as troublemakers.
