  • Due to existing infrastructure to collect traffic information was constructed to expressway and national highway, we cannot precisely know traffic situation for their surrounding area. Therefore, it is difficult to provide reliable traffic information to users using navigation and smartphone. In this research, we collected aerial images by using unmanned airship capable of wide-area monitoring and proposed a method extracting vehicle speed from the collected data. And, we performed experiments to verify the accuracy of extracted vehicle speed. Our method proposed in this research can be used to extract a new approach of traffic information according to increased demand of traffic monitoring. We expect that our method will become a new research trend in traffic information application.

  • The present work was conducted to build a propulsion system for an airship. For this purpose, free shaft gas-turbine was modified to produce electrical power. he experiments were carried out to analyze the driving rotor condition at various power shaft loads. From this analysis, an appropriate damping device was required, and the changeable inertial moment from the fly-wheel was applied. Without the appropriate damping device, instability was found, and it was resulted as power loss. Also the amount of inertial moment was certified by the performance of dynamic transient effects from the engine test results. Knowledge gained from this research could benefit the propulsion and power conversion community by increasing the better understanding of shaft loads and inertial effects.

  • The increased availability of portable, low-cost, high resolution video equipments have resulted in a rapid growth of the applications for video sequences. These video devices can be mounted in handhold unit, mobile unit and airborne platforms like maned or unmaned helicopter, plane, airship, etc. This paper describes the feasibility fur generating image map from the experimental results we designed to track the interested points extracted by KLT operator in the neighboring frames and implement image matching for each frames taken from UAV (Unmaned Aerial Vehicle). In the image registration for neighbourhood frames of aerial video, the results demonstrate the successful rate of matching slightly decreases as the drift between frames increases, and also that the stable photographing is more important matching condition than the pixel shift.

  • Recently, unmanned aircraft EM (electromagnetic) survey based on ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has been widely utilized because of the efficiency in regional survey. We performed the theoretical study on the unmanned airship EM system developed by KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral resources) as part of the practical application of unmanned aircraft EM survey. Since this system has different configurations of transmitting and receiving loops compared to the conventional aircraft EM systems, a new technique is required for the appropriate interpretation of measured responses. Therefore, we proposed a method to calculate the EM field for the arbitrary shaped transmitter and verified its validity through the comparison with analytic solution for circular loop. In addition, to simulate the magnetic responses by three-dimensionally (3D) distributed anomalies, we have adapted our algorithm to 3D frequency-domain EM modeling algorithm based on the edge-FEM (finite element method). Though the analysis on magnetic field responses from a subsurface anomaly, it was found that the response decreases as the depth of the anomaly increases or the flight altitude increases. Also, it was confirmed that the response became smaller as the resistivity of the anomaly increases. However, a nonlinear trend of the out-of-phase component is shown depending on the depth of the anomaly and the used frequency, that makes it difficult to apply simple analysis based on the mapping of the magnitude of the responses and can cause the non-uniqueness problem in calculating the apparent resistivity. Thus, it is a prerequisite to analyze the appropriate frequency band and flight altitude considering the purpose of the survey and the site conditions when conducting a survey using the unmanned aircraft EM system.

  • In this study, we have developed a drone magnetic exploration system (proto-type) using a fluxgate magnetic sensor. Hardware of the system consists of a fluxgate magnetometer, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), a GPS, and a communication module. And we have developed monitoring software, which enables it to transmit the measured data to the ground control system (GCS) in real time. The measured magnetic data are finally saved as 1 Hz data after passing through a notch filter and a band-pass filter. For verification of this system, a preliminary test was conducted to check the magnetic responses of a magnetic object first, then the field test was carried out in two iron mines. We tested the developed system on the field test in Pocheon, Gyeonggi and Jeongseon, Gangwon. The magnetic data from the developed drone system was very similar to those from unmanned airship system developed by Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM). As a result, preliminary experiment and field test have demonstrated that this system is applicable for outdoor aeromagnetic exploration. It requires more studies to improve filter function and instrument performance to minimize noise in the future.
