Many picture books are published every year. Book reviews can play an important role in building knowledge about newly published book. This study analyzed data the coverage and content of reviews in journals with a view to helping librarians and parents become more aware of content and coverage of reviews for picture books. Variations of bibliographic and ordering information appeared among all journals. Most reviews typically included a plot summary and a general statement about the illustrations. Overall, journals provided more comments on literary elements than artistic elements. However, reviews provided insufficient information about the background of reviewers. Physical description of the books appeared in 8.81 % of the sample.

본 연구는 주요 서평매체의 하나인 신문을 대상으로 그 서평의 성격과 경향을 분석한 것이다. 조사범위는 2001년 발행의 동아일보, 한국일보, 매일신문에 한정하였다. 연구결과 이들 신문서평은 일반적인 독자들이 관심을 가지는 문학 및 교양서를 중심으로 지역에 관련된 도서, 또는 번역서를 비중있게 다루고 있으며, 공히 서평의 속보성을 유지하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 각각의 신문은 서평지면의 크기에서 현격한 차이를 드러내고 있으며, 이것이 결과적으로 서평의 건수, 서평자의 구성, 서평의 수준 등에 결정적인 영향을 끼치고 있음을 확인하였다.

Originally [descriptive review] is widely used by general reader. In contrast with this, [critical review] is generally used by librarian and researcher. Like this, book review is divided into descriptive review and critical review. Besides, the present writer su n.0, pposes to make additions to [interpretative review]. In this study, the present writer tries to realize full-scale review concerning [The Root Problem of Law Philosophy/Kim, Pyong-Kyu] by critical review and interpretative review. This study is concerned with analysis of all the reviews published by the reviewing periodicals, The Book Review Culture and The Korean Publishing Journal, from 1991 to 1993. The result of analysis for 736 reviews are followed： 1) The percentage of reviews in the field of philosophy & religion, literature ＆ language, science ＆ technology is lower than the percent-age of books published. But in the field of history and social science the reviewing is proportionately higher than the publishing. 2) Book reviews are prepared by professors, literary reviewers, researchers, and experts in the particular subject field except librarian. 3) Basic elements of reviewing are the career and view point of author, trends of suject field, content, value, omissions, limitations, and format of book, reader's level, etc. Ideal method of book criticism may be summarized as follows： 1) The criterion of book selection are the book's value, the social . demand, and the proportion of titles published. 2) For the unbiased criticism, it should be written by the experienced librarian rather than the experts of particular subject field. 3) Book criticism need to provide not only guide to new books but also interpretation and evaluation about each book for its reader.

최근 국내에서 통계학 전공자들뿐만 아니라 일반인들도 읽을 수 있는 통계학 책이 많이 출판되는 현상은 대단히 반가운 일이다. 그 책들 가운데에는 국내 저자가 쓴 것보다는 번역서가 더 많은데, 번역도서의 양적인 팽창은 한편으로 그 책들이 번역되어야할 이유가 과연 무엇인가라는 질문을 비롯해서 번역의 질적인 면을 검토할 필요성도 제기한다. 이 글에서는 지난 2003년에 나온 번역서 네 권을 대상으로 그 책들에 담긴 색인과 참고문헌, 통계학 이론과 통계학 용어, 그리고 통계학의 역사에 대해 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 또한 그 책들을 소개하는 일간신문의 신간소개나 서평 기사들도 검토하였다. 결론적으로 이 글의 진단은 번역서들에서 보게 되는 많은 문제점들이 통계학과 거리가 먼 번역자들이 그 책을 옮겼기 때문에 생긴다는 것이다. 따라서 국내의 통계학 전문가들이 일반 대중을 위한 통계학 책의 필요성, 번역 작업이 갖는 의미, 번역할 책의 선택에 대해 좀더 활발하게 토론하고 무엇보다 직접 번역 작업에 참여할 필요가 있겠고, 나아가 일반 한국 사람을 대상으로 한국어로 된 훌륭한 통계학 책을 쓰는 작업에도 더 적극적일 필요가 있겠다.
