By exploiting the regular read and write access patterns of embedded SRAM memories inside Viterbi decoder, the memory architecture can be efficiently modified to reduce the power consumption of write operation. According to the experimental results with 65nm CMOS process, the proposed embedded memory used for Viterbi decoder achieves 30.84% of power savings with 8.92% of area overhead compared to the conventional embedded SRAM approaches.

In this paper we explain a trellis representation of block codes and derive their MAP decoding algorithm based on it. We also analyze the performance of block codes and concatenated codes with block codes as components by computer simulations, which were performed by changing the structures and constituent codes of concatenated codes. Computer simulations show that soft decision decoding of block codes get an extra coding gain than their hard decision decoding and that concatenated codes using block codes have good performance in the case of high code rate.

In this paper, we design and implement the simulator for the transmitter and receiver of 4D-8PSK TCM with 2.0, 2.25, 2.5, and 2.75 bits/symbol-channel transmission efficiency recommended by the CCSDS for satellite communications, and then analyze the BER performance of 4D-8PSK TCM system in AWGN channel. The transmitter of 4D-8PSK TCM is designed in accordance with the recommendation in the CCSDS standard. Meanwhile, for the receiver design of 4D-8PSK TCM, we design the differential decoder generalizing the differential encoder/decoder scheme. The trellis decoding algorithm is designed by applying the auxiliary trellis information and the Viterbi algorithm, and an 8-dimensional constellation mapper equation given in the CCSDS standard is deconstructed to design constellation mapper. Especially, we present the optimized receiver for 4D-8PSK TCM system by investigating the BER performances for the traceback lengths in the Viterbi decoder through computer simulations..

In this paper, union upper bound on convolutional coded bit error rates (BER) is derived for downlink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) networks. According to the numerical results, for the small network loads, the BER performance with Laplacian decoding metric outperforms the BER performance with Gaussian decoding metric under downlink OFDMA networks with Viterbi decoder.

In this paper we apply block turbo coding at the transmitter and iterative decoding algorithm at the receiver for different operating modes, based on the 5 ㎓ IEEE 802.1 la WLAN system, instead of convolutional coding and soft decision viterbi algorithm to improve forward error correcting performance. Experimental results showed that each coding scheme outperforms coding gains of up to 3.5 ㏈ at the BER of 10$\^$-3/.

The M-algorithm for decoding convolutional codes can significantly reduce the complexity of the Viterbi algorithm by tracking a fixed number of survivor paths in each level of the decoding trellis. It is an easily-implementable algorithm suited for real-time processing of high-speed data. The algorithm, however, generates a sequence of catastrophic errors when the correct path is not included in the set of survivor paths. In this paper, the performance of the M-algorithm obtained from using various decoding complexity levels, frame lengths, and code constraint lengths is presented. The performance gain is quantified when the algorithm is used in conjunction with codes of increased constraint length. In particular, it is demonstrated the gain from the increased code free distance overcompensates the loss from the correct path being excluded from the survivors, when the frame length is short to moderate. Using 64 survivor paths, the signal-to-noise ratio gain obtained by increasing the constraint length from K=7 to K=9, 11, 15 is respectively 0.6, 0.75, and 08dB, when the frame of length L=100 has the frame error rate of 0.01%.

Transition jitter noise is one of major sources of detection errors in high density recording channels. Implementation complexity of the optimal detector for such channels is high due to the data dependency and correlated nature of the jitter noise. In this paper, two types of hardware efficient sub-optimal detectors are derived by modifying branch metric of Viterbi algorithm and applied to partial response (PR) channels combined with run length limited modulation coding. The additional complexity over the conventional Viterbi algorithm to incorporate the modified branch metric is either a multiplication or an addition for each branch metric in the Viterbi trellis.

SOQPSK-TG which consists of differential precoder and CPM modulator was adopted as telemetry standard because of its high power and bandwidth efficiency. We proposed four-state Viterbi decoder for SOQPSK-TG. Reducing the trellis state to four was possible by simplifying frequency pulse of SOQPSK-TG to square pulse of symbol length 2 and combing this with differential precoder. Compared with conventional SOQPSK-TG receivers, computer simulation result shows about 1 dB performance improvement was achieved at BER of $10^{-5}$ in AWGN channel.

In this paper, the system performance with the convolution code using a Viterbi decoding and the one tap LMS equalizer applied to the OFDM system, which is suitable for IEEE 802.1la wireless LAN in indoor wireless channel, is analyzed through computer simulation. Indoor wireless channel is modeled as Rician fading channel, and QPSK and 16QAM scheme are used for subchannel modulation. In Rician fading channel with the power ratio of the direct path signal to the scattered signals, K=5 dB, BER of $10^{-4}$ is satisfied if the SNRs of the QPSK/OFDM and the 16QAM/OFDM are 8.6 dB and 19.2 dB in hard decision and 5.3 dB and 9.8 dB in soft decision, respectively. Compared with convolution code scheme, it is observed that 16QAM/OFDM system with the one tap LMS equalizer has the performance improvement of 8.6 dB and 2 dB in hard decision and soft decision, respectively.

The LAN method is the most widely used in domestic high-speed internet access and rapidly moving to 1 Gbps Ethernet from 100 Mbps one to provide high-speed services such as UHD TV. The 1000BASE-T PHY with 4 pairs UTP transmits a PAM-5 signal at the 125 MHz clock per each pair to achieve 1 Gbps rate. In order to correct errors over the channel, the transmitter uses a TCM which is combined the convolutional encoder and PAM-5, and the receiver uses the Viterbi decoder. In this paper, we implement a Viterbi decoder which can correct two pair errors and operate at the least 125 MHz clock speed. Finally, we will verify the error correction function and the operating speed of the implemented decoder with a logic analyzer.
