  • In this study, tile performance of a passive tuned mass damper (TMD) and a semi-active tuned mass damper (STMD) was evaluated in terms of seismic response control of elastic and inelastic structures under seismic loads. First, elastic displacement spectra were obtained for the damped structures with a passive TMD, which was optimally designed using the frequency and damping ratio presented by previous study, and with a STMD proposed in this study. The displacement spectra confirm that STMD provides much better control performance than passive md with less stroke. Also, the robustness or the TMD was evaluated by off-tuning the frequency of the TMD to that of the structure. Finally, numerical analyses were conducted for an inelastic structure of which hysteresis was described by Bouc-Wen model and the results indicated that the performance of the passive TMD of which design parameters were optimized for a elastic structure considerably deteriorated when the hysteretic portion or the structural responses increased, while the STMD showed about 15-40% more response reduction than the TMD.

  • PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration) is the parameter which indicates the peak value for strong ground motion and is mainly due to the intensity of the seismic wave. Usually, seismic waves can consist of different characteristics and can have different effects on structures. Therefore, it may be undesirable that the effects of a seismic wave are evaluated only based on the PGA. In this study, time history analysis was executed with a single degree of freedom model for inelastic seismic analysis. The numerical model was assumed to be a perfect elasto-plastic model. Input accelerations were made with El Centro NS (1940), other earthquake records and artificial earthquakes. The displacement ductility demand and cumulative dissipated energy, which were calculated from other artificial earthquakes, were compared. As a result, different responses from other seismic waves which have the same PGA were identified. Therefore, an index which could reflect both seismic and structural characteristics is needed. The SI (Spectrum Intensity) scale which could be obtained from integration by parts of the velocity response spectrum could be an index reflecting the inelastic seismic response of structures. It can be possible to identify from correlation analysis among the SI scale, displacement ductility demand and cumulative dissipated energy that the SI scale is sufficient to be an index for the inelastic response of structures under seismic conditions.

  • This paper presents the results of an analytical study to evaluate the inelastic seismic response characteristics of multistory building structures, the effects of gravity load on the seismic responses and its implications on the earthquake resistant design. Static analyses for incremental lateral force and nonlinear dynamic analyses for earthquake motions were performed to evaluate the seismic response of example multistory building structures. Most of considerations are placed on the distribution of inelastic responses over the height of the structure. When an earthquake occurs, bending moment demand is increased considerably from the top to the bottom of multistory structures, so that differences between bending moment demands and supplies are greater in lower floos of multistory structures. As a result, for building structures designed by the current earthquake resistant design procedure, inelastic deformations for earthquake ground motions do not distribute uniformly over the height of structures and those are induced mainly in bottom floors. In addition, gravity load considerded in design procedure tends to cause much larger damages in lower floors. From the point of view of seismic responses, gravity load affects the initial yield time of griders in earlier stage of strong earthquakes and results in different inelastic responses among the plastic hinges that form in the girders of a same floor. However, gravity load moments at beam ends are gradually reduced and finally fully relaxed after a structure experiences some inelastic excursions as a ground motion is getting stronger. Reduction of gravity load moment results in much increased structural damages in lower floors building structures. The implications of the effects of gravity load for seismic design of multistory building structures are to reduce the contributions of gravity load and to increased those of seismic load in determination of flexual strength for girders and columns.

  • The inelastic displacement ratio is defined as the ratio of the peak inelastic displacement to the peak linear elastic displacement. The inelastic displacement ratio allows simple evaluation of the peak inelastic displacement directly from the peak elastic displacement without computation of the inelastic response. Existing research of the inelastic displacement ratio is limited to piece-wise linear systems such as bilinear or stiffness degrading systems. In this paper, the inelastic displacement ratio is investigated for smooth hysteretic behavior systems subjected to near- and far-fault earthquakes. A simple formula of the inelastic displacement ratio is proposed by using a two step procedure of regression analysis.

  • The base isolation technique and its benefits in reducing the transmitted earthquake energy into a structure have gained increasing recognition during the last two decades. Unfortunately, the current available design procedures, especially for base-isolated bridges, seem inadequate and too restrictive. As a result, practical design procedure still relies upon a series of deterministic time history analyses. In this study, the evaluation of the possibility of the normal mode method to predict the nonlinear seismic responses of base isolated bridges has been performed. The applicability has been examined through the numerical approach with isolator's elastic or plastic states of the base isolated bridges. Numerical results show that the 1st. mode period and the various responses are varied with the state but are conversed. And, the result show that the normal mode method is applicable to predict the seismic responses and to design the babe isolated bridge. Various analysis method to bridges with bilinearized hysteresis isolator and various pier heights are evalulated.

  • In this study, improved capacity spectrum method (CSM) is proposed. The method can account for higher mode contribution to the seismic response of MDOF systems. The CSM has been conveniently used for determining maximum roof displacement using both demand spectrum and capacity curve of equivalent SDOF system. Unlike the conventional CSM, the maximum roof displacement is determined without iteration using inelastic displacement ratio and R factor calculated from demand spectrum and capacity curve. Three moment resisting steel frames of 3-, 9- and 20-stories are considered to test the accuracy of the proposed method. Nonlinear response history analysis (NL-RHA) for three frames is also conducted, which is considered as an exact solution. SAC LA 10/50 and 2/50 sets of ground motions are used. Moreover, this study estimates maximum story drift ratios (IDR) using ATC-40 CSM and N2-method and compared with those from the proposed method and NL-RHA. It shows that the proposed CSM estimates the maximum IDR accurately better than the previous methods.

  • In the nonlinear response history analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on the nonlinear response characteristics of structural systems. As the properties of the ground motion, using time history analysis, are interrelated with many factors such as the fault mechanism, the seismic wave propagation from source to site, and the amplification characteristics of the soil, it is difficult to properly select the input ground motions for seismic response analysis. In this paper, the most unfavourable real seismic design ground motions were selected as input motions. The artificial earthquake waves were generated according to these earthquake events. The artificial waves have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake waves, and their overall response spectra are compatible with the seismic design spectrum with 5% of critical viscous damping. It is concluded that the artificial earthquake waves simulated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures.

  • The capacity spectrum method (CSM), which is known to be an approximate technique for assessing the seismic capacity of an existing structure, was originally proposed for simple building structures that could be modeled as single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems. More recently, however, CSM has increasingly been adopted for assessing most bridge structures, as it has many practical advantages. Some studies on this topic are now being performed, and a few results of these have been presented as ground-breaking research. However, studies have until now been limited to symmetrical straight bridges only. This study evaluates the practical applicability of CSM to the evaluation of irregular curved bridges. For this purpose, the seismic capacities of 3-span prestressed concrete bridges with different subtended angles subjected to some recorded earthquakes are compared with a more refined approach based on nonlinear time history analysis. The results of the study show that when used for curved bridges, CSM induces higher inelastic displacement responses than the actual values, and that the gap between the two becomes larger as the subtended angle increases.
