  • Seismic design codes developed taking into account the strong earthquakes may result in unnecessary economical loss in the low seismic area, and the importance of the performance based design considering the soil-structure interaction is recognized for the reasonable seismic design. In this study. elastic and inelastic seismic response analyses of a single degree of freedom system on the soft soil layer were performed considering the nonlinearity of the soil for the 1 weak earthquakes scaled to the nominal peak accelerations of 0.07g and 0.11g. The seismic response analyses were performed in one step applying the earthquake motions to the bedrock, utilizing a pseudo 3-D dynamic analysis software of the soil-structure system. The study results indicated that seismic response spectra of a system assuming the rigid base or the linear soil layer does not represent the true behavior of a structure-soil system, and it is necessary to take into account the nonlinear soil-structure interaction effects and to perform the performance based seismic design for the various soil layers, having different characteristics, rather than to follow the routine design procedures specified in the design codes for the reasonable seismic design. The nonlinearity of the soft soil excited with the weak seismic motions also affected significantly on the elastic and inelastic seismic response spectra of a system due to the nonlinear soil amplification of the earthquake motions, and it was pronounced especially for the elastic response spectra.

  • The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of the beam-columns and the columns was investigated in this paper. The energy method was deployed to study the inelastic buckling behavior of the beam-columns and columns. which requires the iterative solution of a fourth-order eigenproblem. Hitherto, the patterns of residual stress that satisfies the I-section manufacturing in Korea is not available, therefore the pattern of residual stress used in this study is a 'well-known' simplified pattern. The simplified pattern of the residual stresses is incorporated with the flow theory of plasticity to model the inelastic response. Firstly, this study investigates the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of the I-section beam-columns under a concentric axial compressive force and uniform bending, and the effect of residual stress on the inelastic buckling behavior of beam-columns is studied. The study is then extended to the inelastic buckling of the columns by eliminating a bending moment. These results are compared it with the design method in the Korean Steel Designers Manual (KSDM 1995). This study has found that design method in KSDM (1995) is excessively conservative.

  • In design of steel frames, it is generally believed that elastic system buckling analysis cannot predict real behaviors of structures, while inelastic system buckling analysis can give informative buckling behaviors of individual members considering inelastic material behavior. However, the use of Euler buckling equation with these system buckling analyses have the inherent problem that the methods evaluate unexpectedly large effective lengths of members having relatively small axial forces. This paper proposes a new method of obtaining elastic and inelastic effective lengths of all members in steel frames. Considering a fictitious axial force factor for each story of frames, the proposed method determines the effective lengths using the inelastic stiffness reduction factor and the iterative eigenvalue analysis. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method, the effective lengths of example frames by the proposed method were compared to those of previously established methods. As a result, the proposed method gives reasonable effective lengths of all members in steel frames. The effect of inelastic material behavior on the effective lengths of members was also discussed.

  • The cross-sections of continuous multi-span beams sometimes suddenly increase, or become stepped, at the interior supports of continuous beams to resist high negative moments. The three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) was used to analytically investigate the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of stepped beams subjected to linear moment gradient and resulted in the development of design equations. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered for the analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. First, the distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995), and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The new proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.

  • The flexural behavior of HSB I-girder with a non-slender web attributed to inelastic lateral-torsional buckling under uniform bending was investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis of ABAQUS. The girder was assumed to have a compact or noncompact web in order to prevent premature bend-buckling of the web. The unbraced length of the girder was selected so that inelastic lateral-torsional buckling governs the ultimate flexural strength. The compression flange was also assumed to be either compact or noncompact to prevent local buckling of the elastic flange. Both homogeneous sections fabricated from HSB600 or HSB800 steel and hybrid sections with HSB800 flanges and SM570-TMC web were considered. In the FE analysis, the flanges and web of I-girder were modeled as thin shell elements. Initial imperfections and residual stresses were imposed on the FE model. An elasto-plastic strain hardening material was assumed for steel. After establishing the validity of the present FE analysis by comparing FE results with test results in existing literature, the effects of initial imperfection and residual stress on the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior were analyzed. Finite element analysis results for 96 sections demonstrated that the current inelastic strength equations for the compression flange in AASHTO LTFD can be applied to predict the inelastic lateral torsional buckling strength of homogeneous and hybrid HSB I-girders with a non-slender web.

  • In this paper, the optimum design of plane steel frames using second-order inelastic analysis and section increment method is presented. Since the second-order inelastic analysis accounts for geometric and material nonlinearities of the whole system as well as its component members, the design method based on second-order inelastic analysis does not require separate member capacity checks after analysis. A section increment method proposed by this paper is used as optimization technique. The weight of structures is treated as the objective function. The constraint functions are defined by load-carrying capacities, deflections, inter-story drifts, and ductility requirement. The effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by comparing the results of the proposed method with those of other method.

  • The actual hysteretic behavior of structural elements and systems is smooth. Smooth hysteretic behavior is more representative of actual behavior than bi-linear or piece-wise linear stiffness degrading models. The strength reduction factor in seismic design is used to reduce the elastic strength demand to design levels. In this study, the effect of smoothness on the strength reduction factor is evaluated for several smooth hysteretic systems subjected to near-fault and far-fault earthquakes. For design purposes, a simple expression of the strength reduction factor considering hysteretic smoothness and earthquake characteristics, represented as near-fault and far-fault earthquakes, is proposed. The strength reduction factors calculated by the proposed simple formulation are more similar to the factors directly obtained from inelastic response spectrum analyses than those calculated by several existing formulas.
