  • Numerical simulations of the steady and unsteady state were conducted for a coaxial swirl injector with Kerosene fuel. Non-premixed equilibrium model based on chemical equilibrium assumption was used as turbulence-chemistry interaction model. As an equations of state, SRK(Soave-Redlich-Kwong) EOS was applied to deal with the behavior of real fluid in a high pressure condition. Through the steady and unsteady computations, mean values of steady and time-averaged unsteady state were compared on the temperature and OH mass fraction and it was shown that the flame structure of steady state was different to that of time-averaged unsteady state.

  • An unsteady numerical simulation method for an autorotating rotor in forward flight was developed. The flapping and rotational equations of motion of autorotation are continuously integrated for given time steps, meanwhile the induced velocity field at disc plane is obtained by the dynamic inflow theory embodying the unteadiness. The transitions from arbitrary initial states to equilibrium states were simulated. Steady autorotations as numerical solutions of equations were predicted by using two sources of blade airfoil data. The simulations using airfoil data which were obtained by a two dimensional Navier-Stokes solver in terms of angles of attack and Reynolds numbers have shown good agreements with wind tunnel experimental results.

  • This paper describes a potential-based panel method for the prediction of unsteady performance of a marine propeller operating in a non-uniform flow field. Boundary-value problem, formulated by distributing the normal dipoles and sources on the blade, the hub and the shed wake, is descretized and numerically analyzed in a discretized time domain. Through an extensive test and comparison with the analytic solution, the convergence in time step is verified for a two-dimensional foil. Unsteaty analysis is then carried out for the DTRC 4118 propeller operating in a harmonic wake, and compared favorably with the experimental result. The present method is shown applicable to the analysis of unsteady performance of the propellers.

  • To estimate accurate design quantiles considering statistical characteristics of hydrological data is one of the most important procedures in the design of hydraulic structures. While at-site frequency analysis estimates design quantile using observed data at a site of interest, regional frequency analysis (RFA) utilizes a number of sites included in a hydrologically homogeneous region. Therefore, RFA could provide a more accurate design quantile at ungauged site or sites with short observation period. In this review article, RFA is classified into stationary RFA and nonstationary RFA depending on the characteristic of hydrological data, and the basic concept, procedure, and application of each technique are explained in detail focused on the index flood method. Additionally, a review of the state of the art for RFA procedure is presented. This paper is finalized by describing the stationary regional rainfall frequency analysis over South Korea contained in the amendment of "Standard guidelines for design flood estimation" and various future study topics related to nonstationary RFA.

  • This paper describes the numerical modelling for the steady and unsteady forces of 3-D wings flying near the free surface based on a potential based panel method. For the steady problem where a wing flies over the fixed float surface, steady lift and drag forces are calculated for wings with and without end-plates having different sections, angle of attacks, aspect patios and flying heights. These numerical results are compared with the wind tunnel test results. The unsteady problem is treated as a boundary value one where a wing flies over the described wavy surface. The unsteady lift force variations of a wing due to different wave lengths and heights are calculated at different flying heights.

  • In this paper, we present and verify an aerodynamic reduced-order model (ROM) based on a quasi-steady flow method to reduce the computational cost of supersonic aeroelastic analysis. For supersonic flows, especially when the characteristic time scale of the flow is small compared to that of the structural motion, the unsteadiness of flow can be negligible, and quasi-steady solutions can be used instead of the unsteady solutions for the aeroelastic analysis. Kriging method is used to build the ROM of the aerodynamics. The surface solutions from the ROM are used as the boundary conditions for the structural analysis at each time-step. The ROM is validated against the unsteady solutions.

  • Birds and insect in nature morph their mean camberline shapes to obtain both lift and thrust simultaneously. Previous unsteady thin airfoil theories were derived mainly for a rigid flapping airfoil. An extended unsteady thin airfoil theory for a deformable airfoil is required to analyze the unsteady two-dimensional aerodynamic characteristics of a biomorphing wing. Theodorsen's approach is extended to calculate the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of a biomorphing airfoil. The mean camberline of the airfoil is represented as a polynomial. The unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the morphing airfoil are represented as noncirculatory and circulatory terms. Present theory can be applied to the unsteady aerodynamic analysis of a flapping biomorphing airfoil and the aeroelastic analysis of a morphing wing.

  • A typical unsteady internal ballistic analysis model was proposed to take account the erosive burning with the variance of local velocity and pressure along grain surface to the axis of a solid rocket combustor. The model introduced in this study showed good agreements with the results of previous research. It was investigated that the combustion pressure, grain length, initial temperature, and vaporization temperature of propellant affect on the erosive burning.
