Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is a popular method for multivariate analysis of nonnegative data, the goal of which is decompose a data matrix into a product of two factor matrices with all entries in factor matrices restricted to be nonnegative. NMF was shown to be useful in a task of clustering (especially document clustering). In this paper we present an algorithm for orthogonal nonnegative matrix factorization, where an orthogonality constraint is imposed on the nonnegative decomposition of a term-document matrix. We develop multiplicative updates directly from true gradient on Stiefel manifold, whereas existing algorithms consider additive orthogonality constraints. Experiments on several different document data sets show our orthogonal NMF algorithms perform better in a task of clustering, compared to the standard NMF and an existing orthogonal NMF.
In this paper, we develop a multichannel blind source separation algorithm based on a beamspace transform and the multichannel non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) method. The NMF algorithm is a famous algorithm which is used to solve the source separation problems. In this paper, we consider a beamspace-time-frequency domain data model for multichannel NMF method, and enhance the conventional method using a beamspace transform. Our decomposition algorithm is applied to audio source separation, using a dataset from the international Signal Separation Evaluation Campaign 2010 (SiSEC 2010) for evaluation.
This paper proposes a novel method using K-means and Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) for topic -based multi-document summarization. NMF decomposes weighted term by sentence matrix into two sparse non-negative matrices: semantic feature matrix and semantic variable matrix. Obtained semantic features are comprehensible intuitively. Weighted similarity between topic and semantic features can prevent meaningless sentences that are similar to a topic from being selected. K-means clustering removes noises from sentences so that biased semantics of documents are not reflected to summaries. Besides, coherence of document summaries can be enhanced by arranging selected sentences in the order of their ranks. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better performance than other methods.
We proposes a new method using the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and clustering method to extract the sentences for personalized document summarization. The proposed method uses clustering method for retrieving documents to extract sentences which are well reflected topics and sub-topics in document. Beside it can extract sentences with respect to query which are well reflected user interesting by using the inherent semantic features in document by NMF. The experimental results shows that the proposed method achieves better performance than other methods use the similarity and the NMF.
Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is a method for updating dictionary and gain in alternating manner. Due to ease of implementation and intuitive interpretation, NMF is widely used to detect and separate overlapping sound events. However, NMF that utilizes non-negativity constraints generates parts-based representation and this distinct property leads to a dictionary containing fragmented acoustic events. As a result, the presence of shared basis results in performance degradation in both separation and detection tasks of overlapping sound events. In this paper, we propose a new method that utilizes K-Singular Value Decomposition (K-SVD) based dictionary to address and mitigate the part-based representation issue during the dictionary learning step. Subsequently, we calculate the gain using NMF in sound event detection step. We evaluate and confirm that overlapping sound event detection performance of the proposed method is better than the conventional method that utilizes NMF based dictionary.
Nonnegative tensor factorization(NTF) is a recent multiway(multilineal) extension of nonnegative matrix factorization(NMF), where nonnegativity constraints are imposed on the CANDECOMP/PARAFAC model. In this paper we consider the Tucker model with nonnegativity constraints and develop a new tensor factorization method, referred to as nonnegative Tucker decomposition (NTD). We derive multiplicative updating algorithms for various discrepancy measures: least square error function, I-divergence, and $\alpha$-divergence.

In this paper, we propose a method to improve the background sound separation performance by adding a Wiener filter to the end of the non - negative matrix factorization method. In the case of a mixed voice signal with background sound, a part that has not yet been completely separated may remain in the signal that separated first by the non-negative matrix factorization method. In this case, it can be reduced in proportion to the size of the residual signal due to the Wiener filter, so that the background sound separation or reduction effect can be expected. Experimental results show that the addition of the Wiener filter is more effective than the case of applying the non-negative matrix factorization method.

In part-based image representation, the partial shapes of an object are represented as basis vectors, and an image is decomposed as a linear combination of basis vectors where the coefficients of those basis vectors represent the partial (or local) feature of an object. In this paper, a face recognition for occluded faces is proposed in which face images are represented using non-negative matrix factorization(NMF), one of part-based representation techniques, and recognized using an artificial neural network technique. Standard NMF, projected gradient NMF and orthogonal NMF were used in part-based representation of face images, and their performances were compared. Learning vector quantizer were used in the recognizer where Euclidean distance was used as the distance measure. Experimental results show that proposed recognition is more robust than the conventional face recognition for the occluded faces.
To detect targets with active sonar system in the underwater environments, the targets are localized by receiving the echoes of the transmitted sounds reflected from the targets. In this case, reverberation from the scatterers is also generated, which prevents detection of the target echo. To detect the target effectively, reverberation suppression techniques such as pre-whitening based on autoregressive model and principal component inversion have been studied, and recently a Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF)-based technique has been also devised. The NMF-based reverberation suppression technique shows improved performance compared to the conventional methods, but the geometry of the transducer and receiver and attenuation by distance have not been considered. In this paper, the performance is improved through preprocessing such as the directionality of the receiver, Doppler related thereto, and attenuation for distance, in the case of using a continuous wave with a bistatic sonar. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, simulation with a reverberation model was performed. The results show that the detection probability performance improved by 10 % to 40 % at a low false alarm probability of 1 % relative to the conventional non-negative matrix factorization.

The active control of a vehicle based on vehicle recognition is one of key technologies for the intelligent vehicle, and the part-based image representation is necessary to recognize vehicles with only partial shapes of vehicles especially in urban scene where occlusions frequently occur. In this paper, we implemented a part-based image representation scheme using non-negative tensor factorization(NTF) and realized a robust vehicle recognition system using the NTF feature. The result shows that the proposed method gives more intuitive part-based representation and more robust recognition in urban scene.
