  • This study proposed a new methodology for seismic capacity evaluation of low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) buildings based on non-linear required spectrum. In order to verify the reliability of the proposed method, relationships between results obtained using the proposed method and the non-linear dynamic analyses were investigated. Compared with the seismic protection index (Es=0.6) defined in the Japanese Standard, the applicability of the method was also estimated. Research results indicate that the method proposed in this study compares reasonably well with the detailed evaluation methods. Using the seismic evaluation method developed in this study, the seismic capacity category and earthquake damage degree of low-rise RC buildings corresponding to a specific earthquake level can be effectively estimated.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns using nonlinear finite element analysis. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Damage index aims to provide a means of quantifying numerically the damage in reinforced concrete bridge columns sustained under earthquake loading. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge columns is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.

  • Determination of ductility demand and prediction of nonlinear seismic responses of a structure under the earthquake ground motions have become a very important subject for evaluation of seismic performance in the performance based seismic design. In this study, the system ductility demand and nonlinear seismic responses of the steel moment framed structures by the nonlinear time history analysis are estimated and compared with those obtained from the capacity spectrum method suggested in ATC-40 and proposed method that is an improvement on the capacity spectrum method using the equivalent responses derived directly from a multi degree of freedom system. the adequacy and validity of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results evaluated by the method proposed in this study and the results obtained from method suggested in ATC-40 to the nonlinear seismic responses of the example structures from the nonlinear time history analysis.

Material nonlinearity is taken into account by comprising tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach is incorporated. The proposed numerical method is applied to reinforced concrete bridges and compared.

  • The seismic performance evaluation and retrofit process are very important in old existing bridges. If the result is not appropriate. then a retrofit process are required. Among various retrofit methods, the seismic isolation is a very useful method. because it can be applied by replacing old bridge bearings. In this study, the effectiveness of seismic isolation is rationally verified. For this purpose, two seismic isolations used widely are selected and non-linear static and dynamic analyses are performed. The responses of existing bridges are compared with those of retrofited bridges by seismic isolation bridge for earthquake of target level. and seismic performances are evaluated.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of domestic unreinforced masonry(URM) buildings using nonlinear dynamic analysis. For that, the nonlinear hysteresis models suggested in the previous research were validated for the dynamic analysis. The results of the shaking table test were compared with the dynamic analysis results using the suggested nonlinear hysteresis models. As a result, the nonlinear hysteresis models were expected to be applicable to the dynamic analysis of URM buildings. Based on the models, the dynamic analysis of domestic URM buildings varying the number of stories and opening ratio was carried out. The analysis results showed that most of the domestic URM buildings were very vulnerable to design earthquake in Korea.

  • It is very important that predict the inelastic seismic behavior exactly for seismic performance evaluation of a building in the performance based seismic design. But, it is difficulty that predict the building behavior of actual and exact in simplified load-deformation relation of structural material and members. In this study, system ductility and story ductility capacity of building structure used to the Backbone hinge Model are estimated and compared considering the characteristics of load-deformation relation of structural material and members. Analyses results, bilinear hinge model has lower system ductility and story ductility demands than those of backbone hinge model.

  • Two methods of the nonlinear static pushover analysis have been presented for the performance-based seismic design and evaluation of MDOF continuous bridges. Guidelines for buildings presented in FEMA-273 applying the Displacement Coefficient Method (DCM) and in ATC applying the Capacity Spectrum Method(CSM) have been modified for MDOF bridges. Two methods are compared with the time- history analysis. The lateral load distribution pattern for seismic loads has been examined in the static pushover analysis. The force-based fiber frame finite element has been implemented in the modeling of reinforced concrete piers.

  • In this study, nonlinear finite element analysis procedures are presented for the seismic performance assessment of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel. This paper defines a damage index based on the predicted hysteretic behavior of a circular reinforced concrete bridge pier. Damage indices aim to provide a means of quantifying numerically the damage in circular reinforced concrete bridge piers sustained under earthquake loading. The proposed numerical method is applied to circular reinforced concrete bridge piers with confinement steel tested by the authors. The proposed numerical method gives a realistic prediction of seismic performance throughout the loading cycles for several test specimens investigated.
