  • Presented is a nonlinear constitutive model for progressive tensile fracturing of concrete. The model is incremental, path-dependent, and tensorialy invariant. The total strain tensor is assumed to be a sum of a purely elastic component and an inelastic component. The material is considered to contain weak planes of all directions which characterize the planes of the microcracks. A one-to-one functional dependence is assumed between the normal stress and the normal strain across each of the weak planes. The tangential stiffness of concrete is then derived form the principle of virtual work. The present theory can be applied to loading histories which are nonproportional or during which the principal directions rotate. Good agreement with the available direct tensile test data which cover strain-softening is demonstrated.

  • Generally existing structure analysis was applied to elastic analysis basically in practice. Considering the nonlinear material and the nonlinear geometric to be a more precise analysis, for this reason, The necessity for a structual analysis have been constantly required. Therefore, after optimization is performed, designed a simple model which is applied the principle of nonlinear in this study, a structural analysis of existing experienced users, have a aims at presenting theory and a method in order to perform anyone the analysis easily. In this study, the proposed model applied to die ribs, Regarding the shear load, less strain and stress was generated but strength was sufficient. The initial strain and stress was reconfigured to fit the size and shape, A hyperstudy in conjunction with Abaqus with nonlinear structural analysis, revealed an acceptable maximum and minimum range of stress and under the conditions of minimum strain, the plate made with a constant increment. In the experimental models, the plate thickness was given a power of 40 Newton, according to the thickness of the press die through an iterative process. When the stress and strain was applied to the die thickness, 7-8mm thickness could be obtained by optimizing.

  • In the prediction of response of a pile in soil, numerical approaches such as a finite element method are generally applied due to complicate nonlinear behaviors of soils. However, the numerical methods based on the finite elements require heavy efforts in pile and soil modelling and also take long computing time. So their usage is limited especially in the early design stage in which principal dimensions and properties are not specified and tend to vary. On the contrary, theoretical approaches adopting linear approximations for soils are relatively simple and easy to model and take short computing time. Therefore, if they are validated to be reliable, they would be applicable in predicting responses of a pile in soil, particularly in early design stage. In case of wind turbines regarded in this study, it is required to assess their natural frequencies in early stages, and in this simulation the supporting pile inserted in soil could be replaced with a simplified elastic boundary condition at the bottom end of the wind turbine tower. To do this, analysis for a pile in soil is performed in this study to extract the spring constants at the top end of the pile. The pile in soil can be modelled as a beam on elastic spring by assuming that the soils deform within an elastic range. In this study, it is attempted to predict pile deformations and influence factors for lateral loads by means of the beam-on-spring model. As two example supporting structures for wind turbines, mono pile and suction pile models with different diameters are examined by evaluating their influence factors and validated by comparing them with those reported in literature. In addition, the deflection profiles along the depth and spring constants at the top end of the piles are compared to assess their supporting features.

  • Curved beam structures are generally used as components in structures such as railroad bridges and vehicles. The stability analysis of curved beams has been studied by a large number of researchers. Due to the complexities of structural components, it is difficult to obtain an analytical solution for any boundary conditions. In order to overcome these difficulties, the differential quadrature method (DQM) has been applied for a large number of cases. In this study, DQM was used to solve the complicated partial differential equations for buckling analysis of curved beams. The governing differential equation was deduced and solved for beams subjected to uniformly distributed radial loads. Critical loads were calculated with various opening angles, boundary conditions, and parameters. The results of the DQM were compared with exact solutions for available cases, and the DQM gave outstanding accuracy even when only a small number of grid points was used. Critical loads were also calculated for the in-plane inextensional buckling of the asymmetric curved beams, and two theories were compared. The study of a beam with extensibility of the arch axis shows that the effects on the critical loads are significant.

  • The resonant column testing is a laboratory testing method to determine the shear modulus and material damping factor of soils. The method has been widely used for many applications and its importance has increased. Since the first use of the testing method in 1960's, the low-technology electronic devices fir testing and data acquisition have limited the measurement only to the amplitude of the linear spectrum. The limitations of the testing method are also attributed to the assumption of linear-elastic material in the theory of the resonant column testing and also to the incomplete understanding of the dynamic behaviour of the resonant column testing device. Recently, Joh et al. proposed a theory to overcome the limitations of the resonant column testing by deriving the equation of motion and providing its solution for the resonant column testing device. This study proposed the improved data reduction and analysis method for the resonant column testing, thanks to the advanced data acquisition system and the new theoretical solution for the resonant column testing system. For the verification of the proposed data reduction and analysis method, the numerical simulation of the resonant column testing was performed by the finite element analysis. Also, a series of resonant column testing were performed fir Joomunjin sand, which verified the feasibility of the proposed method and revealed the limitations of the conventional data reduction and analysis method.

  • The present investigation evaluates the flexural behavior of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams under two-point symmetrical concentrated loads according to the variation of the partial prestressing ratio and the effective prestress of prestressing strands. The designed compressive strength of the lightweight concrete with a dry density of 1,770 $kg/m^3$ was 35 MPa. The deformed bar with a yield strength of 383 MPa and three-wire mono-strands with tensile strength of 2,040 MPa were used for longitudinal tensile reinforcement and prestressing steel reinforcement, respectively. According to the test results, the flexural capacity of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams increased with the increase of the partial prestressing ratio and was marginally influenced by the effective prestress of strands. With the same reinforcing index, the normalized flexural capacity of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams was similar to that of pre-tensioned normal-weight concrete beams tested by Harajli and Naaman and Bennett. On the other hand, the displacement ductility ratio of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams increased with the decrease of the partial prestressing ratio and with the increase of the effective prestress of strands. The load-displacement relationship of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beam specimens can be suitably predicted by the developed non-linear two-dimensional analysis procedure. In addition, the flexural cracking moment and flexural capacity of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams can be conservatively evaluated using the elasticity theorem and the approach specified in ACI 318-08, respectively.

  • In order to promote the efficient use of composite materials, effort is currently being directed at the development of design criteria for composite structures. Insofar as design against buckling is concerned, it is well known that, for metal shells, a key step is the definition of 'knockdown' factors on the elastic critical buckling stress accounting mainly for the influence of initial geometric imperfections. At present, the imperfection sensitivity of composite shells has not been explored in detail. Due to the large number of parameters influencing buckling response (considerably larger than for isotropic shells), a very large number of tests would be needed to quantify imperfection sensitivity experimentally. An alternative approach is to use validated numerical models for this task. Thus, the objective of this paper is to outline the underlying theory used in developing a composite shell element and to present results from a validation exercise and subsequently from a parametric study on axially loaded glass fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP) curved panels using finite element modelling. Both eigenvalue and incremental analyses are performed, the latter including the effect of initial geometric imperfection shape and amplitude, and the results are used to estimate 'knockdown' factors for such panels.

  • A special purposed program for ship hull strength analysis considering whipping phenomena is developed. In this program, the non-linear hydrodynamic impact force is considered using the momentum slamming theory and the hull girder is modeled as elastic body on the base of Timoshenko's beam theory. The numerical verifications are conducted in the view points that the effect of slamming impact force, the effect of hydro-elastic formulation, and the effect of various design parameters such as ship speed, wave amplitude, wave length and others. By the application of a real ship design process, the availability of the program is proved. This program has a GUI function for many I/O data process as well as the function to show the 2-D ship motion in the graphic window, and has other available functions for the whipping analysis.

  • In this paper, the formulation of a new simplified finite element is made to analyze the ultimate strength of damaged tubular members subjected to combined axial force and end moment. A damaged tubular member that has the bending deformation and the local dent is modeled by beam elements. Tangent elastic stiffness matrix of a beam element which contains the effect of the geometric nonlinearity is derived by using the updated Lagrangian approach. Here the contribution of the stiffness in the dented area is neglected since its resistance against the external loads is considered to be small. A fully plastic interaction curve of the element under combined loads taking account of the local dent effect is selected as a yielding criterion at each nodal point. Also tangent elasto-plastic stiffness matrix of the element is formulated by plastic node method. Comparison with the present solution and the existing experimental results is made showing that the present method gives quite an accurate solution.

  • Situations where support is provided solely in shaft resistance of drilled shafts are where the base of the drilled hole cannot be cleaned so that it is uncertain that any end bearing support will be developed. Alternatively, where sound bed rock underlies low strength overburden material, it may be possible to achieve the required support in end bearing on the rock only, and assume that no support is developed in the overburden. However, where the drilled shaft is drilled some depth into sound rock, a combination of side wall resistance and end bearing can be assumed. Both theoretical and field studies of the performance of rock socketed drilled shafts show that the major portion of applied load is usually carried in side wall resistance. Normal stress at the rock-concrete interface is induced by two mechanisms. First, application of a compressive load on the top of the pile results in elastic dilation of the concrete, and second, shear displacement at the rough surface of the drilled hole results in mechanical dilation of the interface. If the stiffness of the material surrounding the socket with respect to normal displacement is constant, then the normal stress will increase with increasing applied load, and there will be a corresponding increase in the shear strength. In this study, the numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the behavioral characteristics of side of rock socketed drilled shafts. The cause of non-linear head load-settlement relationship and failure mechanism at side are also investigated properly and the design charts are suggested and verified for the leading to greater efficiency and reliability in the pile design.
