In this paper proportional hazards models for the first through seventh break of 150 mm cast iron pipes in a case study area are established. During the modeling process the assumption of the proportional hazards for covariates on the hazards is examined to include the time-dependent covariate terms in the models. As a result, the pipe material/joint type and the number of customers are modeled as time-dependent for the first failure, and for the second failure only the number of customers is modeled as time-dependent. From the analysis on the baseline hazard functions the failure hazards are found to be generally increasing for the first and second failure, while the hazards of the third break and beyond showed a form of a bath-tub. Furthermore, the changes in the baseline hazard rates according to the time and number of break reflect that the general condition of the pipes is deteriorating. The factors causing pipe break and their effects are analyzed based on the estimated regression coefficients and their hazard ratios, and the constructed models are verified using the deviance residuals of the models.
This paper proposes methodologies for analyzing the accuracy of the proportional hazards model in predicting consecutive break times of water mains and estimating the time interval for economical water main replacement. By using the survival functions that are based on the proportional hazards models a criterion for the prediction of the consecutive pipe breaks is determined so that the prediction errors are minimized. The criterion to predict pipe break times are determined as the survival probability of 0.70 and only the models for the third through the seventh break are analyzed to be reliable for predicting break times for the case study pipes. Subsequently, the criterion and the estimated lower and upper bound survival functions of consecutive breaks are used in predicting the lower and upper bounds of the 95% confidence interval of future break times of an example water main. Two General Pipe Break Prediction Models(GPBMs) are estimated for an example pipe using the two series of recorded and predicted lower and upper bound break times. The threshold break rate is coupled with the two GPBMs and solved for time to obtain the economical replacement time interval.

In this experiment, persulfate, a strong oxidant for ISCO (In-Situ Chemical Oxidation) was used to degraded RDX in artificial ground water at ambient temperature. Results of RDX degradation by persulfate in a batch reactor showed that the oxidation reaction was pseudo first order with estimated Ea (activation energy) of $1.14{\times}10^2kJ/mol$ and the rate was increased with the increase of reaction temperature. The oxidation of RDX by persulfate increased slightly with the increase of initial solution pH from 4 to 8. The RDX oxidation rate increased 13 times at pH 10 compared with that at pH 4, however, alkaline hydrolysis was found to be the main reaction of RDX degradation rather than oxidation. The study also showed that the oxidation rate of RDX by persulfate was linearly dependent upon the molar ratios of persulfate to RDX from 5 : 1 up to 100 : 1, with a proportion constant of $4{\times}10^{-4}$ ($min^{-1}$/molar ratio) at $70^{\circ}C$. While NOM (Natural Organic Matter) exerted negative effects on the oxidation rate of RDX by persulfate, with a proportion constant of $1.21{\times}10^{-4}$ ($min^{-1}{\cdot}L/mg-NOM$) at $70^{\circ}C$ and persulfate/NOM molar ratio of 10/1. The decrease in RDX oxidation rate was linearly dependent upon the added NOM concentration. However, the estimated activation energy in the presence of 20 mg-NOM/L was within 3.3% error compared to that without NOM, which implies the addition of NOM does not alter intrinsic oxidation reaction.
Spectral gain variation characteristics of the silica-based erbium doped fiber amplifiers is investigated in the 1545-1557 nm wavelength region. For a given length of the erbium doped fiber, the gain($G_0$) with minimum spectral gain variation is uniquely determined. The spectral gain imbalance DG is nearly proportional to the difference between G0 and the operating gain(G) with the proportional constant of 0.1-0.2 dB/dB. For the gain flattened EDFA at the input power of -20 dBm/ch. and the gain of 21 dB, the output power and the optical signal to noise variations after 12 cascaded EDFAs were 5 dB and 3 dB, respectively.
Dielectric constant measurement has drawn much attention in the investigation of the properties and contaminations of subsurface. In this study, by varying the frequency from 75 kHz to 12 MHz, dielectric constant was measured for the weathered granite soil and Jumunjin sand having different water contents and dry density. The dielectric constant of sand showed the dispersive behavior indicating that dielectric constant decreased with frequency of an electric field. And the dielectric constant of soil increased as water content and/or dry density increased due to the decrease of air portion and/or the increase of amount of water molecules which could contribute to the development of orientation polarization. The dielectric constant of sand showed a linear relationship with the moisture density, considering both water content and dry density. At low frequency, the dielectric constants calculated by Maxwell's, Topp's and CRIM equation deviated from measured values. It could be explained by the fact that those equations did not consider dispersive behavior of dielectric constant with the frequency.

This study focuses on understanding proportionality, in particular, what constitutes relational understanding of a:b=c:d, which is called proportional expression. The meanings of a:b=c:d are analyzed and some suggestions are offered for improving the teaching and learning of it. The equation a:b=c:d has three different meanings. First, it represents two different structures in one proportional situation. Second, it represents a common structure in two different proportional situations. Finally, it represents a number or a quantity underlying in different proportional situations. It is important to choose and use a unit flexibly to understand the first and the second meanings of a:b=c:d, Double strip diagram and double number line are useful to visualize the meanings of a:b=c:d. In addition, what a number or a quantity in the third meaning of a:b=c:d refers to in proportional situations should be emphasized in teaching and learning of a:b=c:d.
Source parameters for forty four earthquakes which occurred in and around the Korean Peninsula were determined and the relations between them were studied. Snoke's method (Snoke, 1987) was applied in determining the corner frequencies and seismic moments. In general, the source parameters estimated at different stations for an earthquake show different values. These disagreements have been interpreted as originating, in principle, from an inadequate consideration of the source radiation pattern and direction dependent attenuation and amplification. The comer frequencies and seismic moments were averaged to exclude the such directional effects. Other source parameters were estimated from the mean corner frequency and seismic moment. The static stress drops, determined in this study, tend to be independent of seismic moment for events greater than a specific magnitude. For earthquakes with a size less than about $1.0{\times}10^{22}$ dyne-cm (nearly same as $M_L = 4.0$), the stress drop tends to decrease with the decreasing moment. This fact suggests a breakdown of the scaling law of source parameters in earthquakes below the threshold magnitude.
This study theoretically reviews the basin storage coefficient and concentration time using the Nash model, a simple unit hydrograph theory. First, the storage coefficient and concentration time of Nash instantaneous unit hydrograph (IUH) are derived based on their definitions, whose characteristics as well as their relationship are also reviewed. Additionally, several empirical equations of storage coefficient and concentration time commonly used in Korea are evaluated by comparing them with those for the Nash IUH. Major results of this study are summarized as follows. (1) The concentration time of Nash IUH is approximately linearly proportional to the number of linear reservoirs, but the storage coefficient non-linearly to the square root. That is, if increasing the number of linear reservoirs by four times, the concentration time becomes also increased by about four times, but the storage coefficient only about two times. This result has a special meaning to understand the effect of basin subdivision on the concentration time and storage coefficient. (2) The storage coefficient and concentration time of Nash IUH are not independent each other, so their independent estimation does not make any physical sense. As the concentration time among the two is more sensitive to the number of linear reservoirs, which should be estimated first, then the storage coefficient considering the concentration time estimated. (3) Empirical equations of concentration time can be divided into two groups, one following the linear channel theory and the other not, whose equation forms are also found to be very similar. This result indicates that the characteristic factors dominating the concentration time are very similar, indicating the possibility of its regionalization over a basin with consistent equation forms. (4) Those for storage coefficient like the Russell formulae are found to consider the physical characteristics of a basin, so their unreasonable applications could sufficiently be excluded.

In this paper, an improved method is proposed to eliminate the chattering for Sliding Mode Controller. The differential-calculus of a switching function is converged to a particular constant or the proportional term so that the chattering in transient state is eliminated in the conventional method. However, by using the improved method, it is converged to its proportional-integral term so that the chattering is eliminated in transient state and steady state both. The computer simulation for brushless DC motor speed controller is used to compare the improved method with the conventional method and to verify the useful effect of the method in this paper.
