Java has been established as one of the most widely-used languages owing to its support of object-oriented concepts, safety, and flexibility. Garbage collection in the Java virtual machine is a core component that relieves application programmers of difficulties related to memory management. In this paper, we propose a memory manager and a garbage collector that is implemented on a embedded java virtual machine. The memory manager divide a heap into various-sized cells and manages it as blocks of same-sized cells. So it is possible to allocate and free memory fast. We adopted the 3-color based Mark & Sweep garbage collector as our base algorithm and we propose 4-color based Mark & Sweep garbage collector for supporting multi-threaded program. The proposed garbage collector occurs memory fragmentation but we show through a experiment that the fragmentation ratio is almost fixed according as we create objects continuously.

Temporary files are generated when the Hash Join is performed on tables larger than the memory. During the join process, each temporary file is deleted sequentially after it completes the I/O operations. This paper reveals for that the fallocate system call and file deletion-related trim options significantly impact the hash join performance when temporary files are managed on SSDs rather than hard disks. The experiment was conducted on various commercial and research SSDs using PostgreSQL, a representative open-source database. We find that it is possible to improve the join performance up to 3 to 5 times compared to the default combination depending on whether fallocate and trim options are used for temporary files. In addition, we investigate the write amplification and trim command overhead in the SSD according to the combination of the two options for temporary files.
Recently, there have been large storage demands for manipulating multimedia data. To solve the tremendous storage demands, one of the major researches is the SAN(Storage Area Network) that provides the local file requests directly from shared-disk storage and also eliminates the server bottlenecks to performance and availability. SAN also improve the network latency and bandwidth through new channel interface like FC(Fibre Channel). But to manipulate the efficient storage network like SAN, traditional local file system and distributed file system are not adaptable and also are lack of researches in terms of a metadata structure for large-scale inode object such as file and directory. In this paper, we describe the architecture and design issues of our shared-disk file system and provide the efficient bitmap for providing the well-formed block allocation in each host, extent-based semi flat structure for storing large-scale file data, and two-phase directory structure of using Extendible Hashing. Also we describe a detailed algorithm for implementing the file system's device driver in Linux Kernel and compare our file system with the general file system like EXT2 and shard disk file system like GFS in terms of file creation, directory creation and I/O rate.
Researches in text categorization have been confined to whole-document-level classification, probably due to lacks of full-text test collections. However, full-length documents availably today in large quantities pose renewed interests in text classification. A document is usually written in an organized structure to present its main topic(s). This structure can be expressed as a sequence of sub-topic text blocks, or passages. In order to reflect the sub-topic structure of a document, we propose a new passage-level or passage-based text categorization model, which segments a test document into several Passages, assigns categories to each passage, and merges passage categories to document categories. Compared with traditional document-level categorization, two additional steps, passage splitting and category merging, are required in this model. By using four subsets of Routers text categorization test collection and a full-text test collection of which documents are varying from tens of kilobytes to hundreds, we evaluated the proposed model, especially the effectiveness of various passage types and the importance of passage location in category merging. Our results show simple windows are best for all test collections tested in these experiments. We also found that passages have different degrees of contribution to main topic(s), depending on their location in the test document.
Fast File System(FFS) utilizes large disk bandwidth to improve the write performance of large files. One way to improve the performance is to write multiple blocks of a large file at a single disk I/O through the disk bandwidth. However, rather than disk bandwidth, the performance of small file writes is limited by disk access times significantly impacted by disk movements such as disk seek and rotation because FFS writes each of small files at a single disk write. We propose CW-FFS (Co-Writing Fast File System) to improve the write performance of small files by minimizing the disk movements that are needed to write small files to disks. Its key technique called co-writing scheme is to dynamically collect multiple small files named by a given directory and then write them at a single disk I/O to contiguous disk locations. Co-writing several small files at a single disk I/O reduces multiple disk movements that are needed for small file writes to one single disk movement, thus increasing the overall write performance of write-intensive applications. Furthermore, a file allocation scheme is introduced to prevent co-writing scheme from having a negative impact on disk spatial locality of small files named by a given directory. The measurement of our technique implemented in the OpenBSD 4.0 shows that CW-FFS increases the performance of small file writes over FFS in the range from 5 to 35% in the Postmark benchmark.

In this paper, we proposed the image hiding method which decreases calculation amount by encrypt partial data using discrete wavelet transform and linear scale quantization which were adopted as the main technique for frequency transform in JPEG2000 standard. Also we used the chaotic system which has smaller calculation amount than other encryption algorithms and then dramatically decreased calculation amount. This method operates encryption process between quantization and entropy coding for preserving compression ratio of images and uses the subband selection method and the random changing method using the chaotic system. For ciphering the quantization index we use a novel image encryption algerian of cyclically shifted in the right or left direction and encrypts two quantization assignment method (Top-down/Reflection code), made change of data less. Also, suggested encryption method to JPEG2000 progressive transmission. The experiments have been performed with the proposed methods implemented in software for about 500 images. consequently, we are sure that the proposed are efficient image encryption methods to acquire the high encryption effect with small amount of encryption. It has been shown that there exits a relation of trade-off between the execution time and the effect of the encryption. It means that the proposed methods can be selectively used according to the application areas. Also, because the proposed methods are performed in the application layer, they are expected to be a good solution for the end-to-end security problem, which is appearing as one of the important problems in the networks with both wired and wireless sections.

This paper presents the window-based permit distribution scheme for efficient medium access control to support multiclass traffic in APON(ATM over passive optical network). The proposed MAC protocol considers the characteristics of QoS(Quality of Service) for various traffic classes. A periodic RAU(request access unit) in upstream direction, includes dedicative request fields for each traffic category within the request slot. The transmission of upstream cell is permitted by the proposed window-based spacing scheme which distributes the requested traffic into several segments in the unit of one spacing window. The delay sensitive traffic source such as CBR or VBR with the stringent requirements on CDV and delay, is allocated prior to any other class. In order to reduce the CDV, so that the permit arrival rate close to the cell arrival rate, Running-Window algorithm is applied to permit distribution processing for these classes. The ABR traffic, which has not-strict CDV or delay criteria, is allocated flexibly to the residual bandwidth in FIFO manner. UBR traffic is allocated with the lowest priority for the remaining capacity. The performance of proposed protocol is evaluated in terms of transfer delay and 1-point CDV according to various offered load. The simulation results show that our protocol has the prominent improvement on CDV and delay performance with compared to the previous protocol.

In this paper, we present a new buffer pool management scheme designed for video type news objects to build a cost-effective News On Demand storage server for serving users requests beyond the limitation of disk bandwidth. In a News On Demand Server where many of users request for video type news objects have to be serviced keeping their playback deadline, the maximum numbers of concurrent users are limited by the maximum disk bandwidth the server provides. With our proposed buffer cache management scheme, a requested data is checked to see whether or not it is worthy of caching by checking its average arrival interval and current disk traffic density. Subsequently, only granted news objects are permitted to get into the buffer pool, where buffer allocation is made not on the block basis but on the object basis. We evaluated the performance of our proposed caching algorithm through simulation. As a result of the simulation, we show that by using this caching scheme to support users requests for real time news data, compared with serving those requests only by disks, 30% of extra requests are served without additional cost increase.
