  • In this research, I would like to choose sliding distance and ventilated hole number which affect to the amount of wear of disk and pad as experiment conditions of 'the amount of wear' through wear test of motorcycle brake disk. Also, I analyze the amount of wear according to the variation of coefficient of friction by using design of experiment that is being widely used in diverse areas. With the tests of least, I present the correlation of each experiment condition. Therefore, I analyzed the variation of the amount of wear of disk and pad according to test factors such as ventilated hole number, applied load, sliding speed, and sliding distance in wear test of motorcycle brake disk by applying the design of experiment. Also, I analyzed quantitatively the influence of test factors through Taguchi Robust experimental design, response surface and examined the most suitable level and estimation of the amount of wear of disk. From these, I reached the following conclusions. response surface design, mathematical model was constructed about amount of wear of disk and pad. The amount of wear that decrease according to increase of ventilated hole number, and it's increase according to Increase of applied load, sliding speed, and sliding distance.

  • This study presents the thermal cracking on a commercial vehicle ventilated brake disk. Distributions of temperature and thermal stress of the disk were analysed, using FEM analysis, under the several driving conditions with actual vehicle specifications. The results from the fatigue tests on the disk material were compared with those from FEM analysis. In case of deceleration of 0.6 g with initial vehicle speed of 97, 140, and 160 km/h, the maximum compressive stress at the disk surface of disk due to braking was 224, 318, and 362 MPa, respectively. It was estimated that each damage fraction of 0.00005, 0.00050, 0.00136 per full stop was imposed on the brake disk in case of deceleration of 0.6 g with initial vehicle speed of 97, 140, and 160 km/h, respectively.

  • The friction test using disk-on-pad type was carried out and regression analysis with friction parameters was applied fur wear loss presumption of motorcycle break disk. The wear loss has an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors on wear loss of motorcycle break disk. From this study, the result was shown that the regression analysis equation containing 4 elements were constructed and this equation had a trust of 95% in wear loss presumption of motorcycle break disk. It is possible to apply for another automobile parts.

  • The effect of manufacturing parameters on friction characteristics of motorcycle break system was studied using a design of experiment. Such parameters conditions have an effect on the frictional factor such as applied load, sliding speed, and number of ventilated disk hole. However, it is difficult to know the mutual relation of these factors. In this study, the friction characteristics using design of experiment containing 3 elements were investigated for an optimal condition for the best motorcycle break system employing full factorial design. From this study, the result was shown that the applied load in frictional factors was the most important, next to sliding speed, number of ventilated disk hole.

  • Fatigue crack propagation tests for the brake disc cast iron were conducted for investigating fatigue crack propagation rate(da/dN), crack propagation path and fracture toughness($K_c$) of the material. The threshold stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, was found to be about $6MPa{\sqrt{m}}$ at the stress ratio of R = 0.1. Also, fracture toughness value was determined to be $24.7MPa{\sqrt{m}}$. Irregular fatigue fracture surfaces were observed, indicating that fatigue crack growth occurred at the interface between randomly scattered flak graphite and ferrite, where the interfacial strength was relatively weak.

  • The fatigue characteristics of the carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites (CFRC) material are necessary for the advanced industries requiring the thermal resistance. The research and development of CFRC have been in progress in the field of aerospace and defense industry. In this paper, we investigated the fatigue characteristics of CFRC by using an aircraft brake disk system. As the results of a series of tensile tests, the tensile strengths of CFRC were appeared 102.8 MPa ($0^{\circ}$), 98.6 MPa ($60^{\circ}$), and 95.5 MPa ($90^{\circ}$), respectively. It was showed that CFRC had better tensile property than the usual composite materials. As the results of fatigue tests, the fatigue limit was ~ 77 MPa, which is under the 75% of the maximum tensile load. CFRC is recommended as a strong potential composite materials because the carbon fibers are closely packed and strongly bonded between the carbon fibers.

  • The heat generated by the brake system of vehicles results in reduction of friction force on the brake surface and vibration during a braking. To solve these problems, extensive research for the brake shape has been conducted such as drilling cooling holes on the brake disc, accommodating ventilated holes and etc. In this study, we suggest the circumferential pressing type brake disc in order to improve its cooling performance. In order to compare the cooling-down efficiency between the conventional side-pressing type and the circumferential-pressing type, we adopted the FMVSS 105-77 as thermal analysis conditions and This newly proposed concept has been verified using Thermal-structure Coupled Field Analysis along with comparative analysis with the existing ventilated disk.

  • This research is to numerically investigate the convective cooling performance in the Disk brake. Research concentrates on the heat transfer coefficient and cooling performance which are selected with cooling local locations. Cooling performance of the Hole disk has been compared by Ventilated Disk. According to the results of heat transfer on the disk brake, activated velocity distributions more appear in the Hole disk. This is due to the fact that a number of hole units have exactly 120 on the surface of the hole disk. Therefore, velocity distributions of hole disk brake is better activated than Ventilated disk. According to the calculations of Nusselt number between surface and atmosphere in the interested cooling area, average value of cooling effect has been increased 13.5% by the hole disk at driving of speed 65 km/h situation and grown 18% by the hole disk at driving speed of 100 km/h. Due to the flow of air through the hole route, cooling performance of the hole disk was very excellent. In addition, cooling effect on edge of the bottom is better than the vicinity of center.

  • The disc-pad brake system is an important part of automobile safety system. During braking, the kinetic energy and potential energies of a moving vehicle are converted into the thermal energy through frictional heat between the brake disc and the pads. Most of the thermal energy dissipated through the brake disc. The temperature could be exceed the critical value for a given material, which leads to undesirable effects, such as the brake fade, premature wear, brake fluid vaporization, bearing failure, thermal cracks, and thermallyexcited vibration. The object of the present study is to investigate temperature field and temperature variation of brake disc and pad during single brake. The brake disc is decelerated at the initial speed with constant acceleration, until the disc comes to stop. The pad-disc brake assembly is built by 3D model with the appropriate boundary condition. In the simulation process, the mechanical loads are applied to the thermomechanical coupling analysis in order to simulate the process of heat produced by friction.

  • A two-degree-of-freedom model is suggested to describe basic dynamical behaviors of the interaction between the pad and the disc of a disc brake system. Although a pad (and a disc) has many modes of vibration in practice, only one mode of each component Is considered. In this paper, a linear analysis is performed by means of the stability analysis to show various conditions for the system to become unstable, and is based on the assumption that the existence of limit cycle (this corresponds to an unstable equilibrium point inside the limit cycle) represents the squeal state of the disc brake system. The results of the stability analysis show that the damping of the disc is as much Important as that of the pad, whereas the damping of the pad only is considered In most practical situations.
