In this study, we studied the gamma-radiation effect of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) manufactured by array sensors. The array FBGs were fabricated in a different Bragg wavelength using the same commercial Ge-doped fiber and exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of about 100 kGy at the dose rate of 113 Gy/min. It was analyzed radiation effects by measuring the radiation-induced change in the temperature sensitivity coefficient and Bragg wavelength shift after irradiation.

For the simultaneous measurement of strain and damage signal a fiber Bragg grating sensor system with a dual demodulator was proposed. The dual demodulator is composed of a demodulator using a tunable Fabry-Perot filter measuring the low-frequency signal with large magnitude such as strain and the other using a passive Mach-Zehnder interferometer detecting the high-frequency signal with small amplitude such as impact or damage signal. Using the proposed fiber Bragg grating sensor system, both the strain and damage signals of a cross-ply laminated composite beam under tensile loading were simultaneously measured. The strain and damage signals detected by single fiber Bragg grating sensor showed that sudden strain shifts were accompanied with vibration at a maximum frequency of several hundreds of kilohertz at the instant of matrix crack propagation in the 90 degree layer in composite beam.

A fiber optic based weight sensor has fabricated using a fiber Bragg grating with a weight sensitive. The sensing concept exploits the inherent characteristics of the FBG and is based on the strain effect induced in the fiber Bragg grating through. A direct indication of the weight level is given by the shift of the Bragg wavelength caused by the expansion of the sensing material. A FBG behaves like a spectral filter which has inherent characteristics that render it very sensitive to strain and temperature. The sensing principle is also based on the strain effect induced in the FBG through the caused by the weight. The experimental setup used for the initial investigation to characterize the mass response of the sensor. The transmitted signal from the sensor was monitored using an optical spectrum analyzer with a resolution bandwidth of 0.4nm. In this paper, we presented the spectral characterization and shaping of FBG by scanning a mass element that affects a small grating fraction at a time, without permanent effects on the optical fiber when the various wavelength and strain is removed. That is, destruction when the optical fiber for weight is physically damaged.

In this paper, the transverse strain was measured using polarization maintaining fiber Bragg grating(PMFBG) sensor. PMFBG sensor was fabricated using phase mask and Excidmer laser. The reflected wavelength of PMFBG sensor had dual peaks due to intrinsic birefringence. To find the polarization axes, peak sensitivity was measured under compression test. The signal characteristics of PMFBG sensor were also examined in embedding condition. The embedded PMFBG sensor in epoxy block was loaded for the transverse strain measurement, The wavelength-swept fiber laser(WSFL) was used to construct the PMFBG sensor system. Experiments showed that the PMFBG sensor could successfully measure the transverse strain.

Emerging fiber optic sensor technologies have shown great potential to overcome the difficulties associated with conventional sensors. Fiber optic sensors are immune to EM noise and electric shock and thus can be used in explosion-prone areas. Several kinds of fiber optic sensors have been developed over the last two decades to take advantage of these merits. There have also been many field applications of fiber optic sensors for structural health monitoring as NDT/HDE. However, very few sensors, particularly a load cell have been successfully commercialized. This Paper Presents a load cell using fiber Bra99 gra1ing (FBG) sensors. The shape of the load cell is a link type, and three FBG sensors are used for measuring strains at three different points. Especially, these strains are processed with a differential method in order to exclude common mode noise such as temperature. Moreover, the sensitivity, the linearity and the resolution of the load cell were successfully verified from the experiment of tension test.

This paper investigates the influence of hydrogen loading process on the radiation sensitivity of fiber Bragg gratings (FBG). We made the FBG inscribed in the same commercial Ge-doped fiber with different hydrogen loading periods. We measured the Bragg wavelength shift (BWS) of the FBG exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 18 kGy, and evaluated the change of full width at half maximum (FWHM) and the FBG temperature sensitivity coefficient after irradiation. Varying hydrogen loading parameter led to BWS differences up to nearly a factor of two.
A novel fiber optic sensor is demonstrated using a FBG in PM(Polarization-Maintaining) fiber. Gratings have been written in a Bow-Tie type fiber using the phase mask. The operation of the sensor simply involves monitoring back-reflected Bragg wavelengths from the grating. Since PM fiber has two principal semi-axes with two indices of refraction, two Bragg wavelengths were observed. We have observed the position of Bragg wavelengths for PM FBG shifted simultaneously by either applying the longitudinal strain or temperature change. The wavelength sensitivity of 1.2pm/$\mu$$\varepsilon$ about a longitudinal strain and the wavelength sensitivity of 11.4pm/$^{\circ}C$ about a temperature have been experimentally achieved. The wavelength sensitivity of both longitudinal strain and temperature are approximately same with the reported values for the single mode FBG. On the other hand, the change of separation between Bragg wavelengths was observed by the applying transverse stress. We observed that the separation between two Bragg wavelengths is proportional to the applied transverse stress. The wavelength sensitivity of 14.6 pm/N about a transverse stress has been achieved. We have demonstrated PM FBG sensors can measure the transverse stress independently from the effects of temperature.

An optical fiber sensor is capable of nondestructive measurement of a structure and it has an advantage of the immunity to electromagnetic interference because light is not affected by electromagnetic wave. In addition, if optical fibers are buried in an object like a concrete, this sensor tan analyze defects and physical status of the object without disassembling it. Especially, the fiber Bragg grating sensor is a promising optical fiber sensor capable of nondestructive test of such an object. A fiber Bragg grating has the characteristics of reflecting or blotting light of a specific wavelength. If we apply physical quantity like strain to the fiber Bragg grating, the center wavelength of the reflected light is shifted and then we can find the physical quantity applied to the fiber Bragg grating by measuring the center wavelength shift of the reflected light. The fiber Bragg grating sensor capable ot static and dynamic strain measurement is being used in health-monitoring of buildings, structures, etc. Recently increasing is interest in dynamic strain measurement inevitable to the civil structures such as roads and bridges. In this study we implemented the optical fiber sensor system which can measure dynamic strain at multiple points using Fabry-Perot wavelength demodulation. And we measured the static and dynamic strain using this sensor system with a test structure(cantilever). Measurement results were similar to those obtained with the conventional electrical measurement methods.
Among many fiber optic sensors, FBG sensors are being studied more actively than any other sensor due to good multiplexing capabilities. Recently, the application fields of FBG sensors are mainly focused on the composite materials through embedding rather than attaching on the surface. However, there are many limitations on the embedding FBG sensors into composite materials because of the birefringence effects which is induced when FBG sensors are not embedded parallel to the reinforcing fiber. In this study, the fabrication method of FBG sensors with various grating length that are easy to fabricate with good multiplexing capabilities and more stable from the birefringence effects are investigated. The signal characteristics of the FBG sensors are also verified through the cure monitoring of 2 kinds of composite materials.

A fiber Bragg grating sensor is considered a smart sensor that shows outstanding performance in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). It has a powerful advantage, especially that of multiplexing, which enables several parameters to be sensed at multiple points by using a single optical fiber line. Among several parameters, the thermal expansion coefficient and thermo-optic coefficient are required to measure temperature. In previous studies, these were considered constant variables. This study shows that two parameters vary with temperature and newly proposes a temperature function for these two parameters. Specifically, these two parameters were defined as a single variable, and then, it was experimentally verified that this variable is a function of temperature. Finally, it was shown that temperature from RT to $100^{\circ}C$ was precisely measured by using the temperature function that was defined through the experiment.
