  • The kiln at Chollanamdo Kwangjusi Ch'unghyodong, which produced punch'ong and white wares for a period of 70 to 80 years in the 15th century, is examined for their scientific technological param-eters. Punch'ong sherds were divided into seven different groups according to the location and the layer of the waste mounds from which they were excavated. Optical and scanning electron microscope were used for microstructural observations and X-ray diffraction and polarized microscope for mineral characteristics. For determining the firing temperature, sherds were refired at different temperatures and their micro-structural changes were observed. Some wares such as the group CHE2 was high quality wares fired at high emperature around 1200$^{\circ}C$ for palace use, but as the ceramics ware became more widely used and the white wares increasingly preferred over punch'ong, lower quality wares of rougher raw materials were firedat lower temperatures around 1100-1150$^{\circ}C$ in quantity. They used local raw materials of several types, all available locally.

  • As part of supporting projects, the conservation science team of National Museum of Korea has treated 12 items of the porcelains entrusted by Jeonju National Museum for conservation. This paper is about the porcelains called the rice-bale-shaped battle white porcelain (No. Junju 97) and the big jar with incised fish design buncheon ware (No. Junju 5630) among the 12 items of porcelains finished with treatment, and by analyzing the information collected in the process of treating the rice-bale-shaped battle white porcelain, the manufacturing method and the use of the needle was presumed. As the big jar with incised fish design buncheon ware had been damaged extensively, it was unclear whether it could be repaired or not, but now I am going to introduce how it can be repaired more efficiently.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of Punchong and Whiteware pottery excavated from the kiln site in Dongkok-Town, Gimge. Scientific analysis is carried out to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of the body and glaze. The physical properties indicate the gradual development of the production technology with respect to the kiln operating conditions and period. In chemical properties, the ceramic body is found to be made of raw materials from the same source, but the mixing method depends on the type of Punchong and Whiteware pottery, the production kiln, and period. Whiteware pottery is manufactured with less over 1.3% of the colorant content and more about 1.2% of the $K_2O$ flux content than Punchong pottery. This compositions allow easier vitrification at the same temperature. These characteristics which is low colorant content and high flux content become more prominent as lately. The ceramic glaze is likely to have changed the type of raw materials used after 16~17C, as the contents of MgO, $TiO_2$, MnO, $P_2O_5$ are less three to ten times than 15C.

  • This study focuses on the raw material characteristics, including firing temperature and the similarity of clay body, and making techniques on the underwater ceramics from offshore of Taean Mado, the Republic of Korea. The ceramic specimens include various types of celadons, Buncheongwares and white porcelains with very similar physical characteristics. All the clay bodies composed of same mineral phases within mullite and quartz, while cristobalite were also found in some white porcelains. Also, the geochemical composition of the clay body shows regular behavior properties for all the elements consisting of the celadons and Buncheongwares. In contrast, the irregular properties of trace and incompatible elements were found in white porcelains. Therefore, it is presumed that the white porcelains were made using the clay body with different source from the celadons and Buncheongwares. Notably, some white porcelains in low Th content are assumed to be made with clay formed in a different environments. Meanwhile, most of the ceramics had gone through the firing of 1,200 to 1,300℃, with some celadons fired from 1,150℃ to 1,200℃. Also, it can be interpreted as some white porcelains were fired on even up to 1,500℃.

  • As described above, the location of Jagiso eunchon in Goheung-hyeon and the nature of Undae-ri kiln site were examined. Goheung-hyeon's administrative agency was moved to Joyang-hyeon, which is now Joseong-myeon, Boseong-gun in 1395. Therefore, Goheung-hyeon Jagiso Eunchon in Sejongsillok Jiriji corresponding to 1424~1432 should be found in the west of Joseong-myeon, Boseong, where the administrative agency was moved in 1395. Among the four boundaries of Goheung-hyeon recorded in the 『Sejongsillok』 Jiriji, it is recorded as 2-ri by the sea in the south and 8-ri by Nakan in the east. If the current Goheung-hyeon is Goheung-hyeon's administrative agency in the Sejongsillok Jiriji Records Compilation Period, it cannot be the boundary the south and east mentioned above. This is because it cannot be 2-ri from the current Goheung-eup to the sea in the south, and Nakan is close to the north, not the east, as recorded. However, it has already been suggested that Joyanghyeonseong(朝陽縣城), located in Gonae Village, Ucheon-ri, Josung-myeon, Boseonggun is an Goheunghyeon's administrative agency. And if the four-way boundary of Goheung-hyeon was converted into the current distance unit based on this place(Joyanghyeonseong, 朝陽縣城), an approximate result could be obtained even if it did not exactly match. Therefore, it is highly likely that Goheung-hyeon's administrative agency, which was moved to Joyang-hyeon, Boseong in 1395, is Gonae Village, Ucheon-ri, JoSeong-myeon, Boseong. Jagiso eunchon(犾村) in Goheung-hyeon can be interpreted as a "dog-shouting village." It is thought to be a meaning structure of "animal + sound". A place name thought to have the same structure was identified in Jeongheung-ri, west of Ucheon-ri, Joseongmyeon, Boseong. It is the name of a village called Hoeum-dong(虎吟洞), and it is interpreted as the sound of a tiger or the bark of a tiger, which is the same as the meaning structure of Eunchon. However, there is Gaesan Village in the south of Hoeum-dong, and a Buncheong ware kiln site was identified around it. At this kiln site, a fragment of carved Buncheong ware engraved with the character "Eon", which corresponds to the right stroke of the character "Seom (贍)" in the name "Naeseom (內贍)" was identified. A small amount of Buncheong ware and Joseon celadon pieces were also identified. It can be seen that the Buncheong ware paid to the government was made by checking the Buncheong ware with the government name engraved on it. On the west side of Joyanghyeonseong Fortress in Ucheon-ri, joseong-myeon, Boseong, which was the administrative agency of Goheung-hyeon and the area around the Gaesan Buncheong ware kiln site in Jeongheung-ri, where the Buncheong ware paid to the government was, is thought to be Jagiso Eunchon, Goheung-hyeon. Jagiso and Dogiso are located in the four directions based on the administrative agency. Naturally, the location of Jagiso and Dogiso is also determined on where the administrative agency of Hyeon is. Since the Goheung-hyeon's administrative agency in the early Joseon Dynasty was moved to Ucheon-ri, joseong-myeon, Boseong-myeon, it is necessary to naturally find Jagiso and Dogiso in Boseong. In addition, regarding the nature of the kiln site in Undae-ri, the aspects of the excavated relics were considered. As a result, it is believed that the Undae-ri kiln site functioned as a jagiso in Heungyang-hyeon from February 1441 to the 1470s. If so, the "Ye" Buncheong ware, which was collected around Undae-ri kiln No. 7, could be naturally understood.

  • Twelve Punchong sherds collected in Hakbongni, Kongju where the well known iron-painted on white slip were manufactured from late 15C to early 16C were analyzed for their composition and microstructure. The composition of the body was analyzed by X-ray fluorescence and that of glaze by electron probe micro-analyzer. Microstructure was observed by optical microscope, polarizing microscope, EPMA, and X-ray diffractometer. The results of composition of body and glaze of Hakbongni were compared with those of Punchong from Yongsuri, Boryong which was close to Hakbongni. The composition of body and glaze of these two areas were compared by principal component analysis using SPSS program. Hakbongni bodies have higher silica and flux materials but lower alumina and their glaze have higher silica, soda, iron oxide but lower alumina, calcia. Hakbongni punchong itself is divided into two groups. Their glaze is lime type. There are many remnant minerals, such as quartz, large feldspar mass with partially melted surrounding area, albite, biotite, and iron-oxide. From such a microstructure we can assume that preparation of raw material was rather crude and firing temperature quite low. Iron-painted material is identified as Mg/Fe/Al spinel by composition analysis and XRD pattern.

  • We fabricated the gap-filling material for antic-ceramics restoration which were made up polyvinyl butyral (butvar) base and silane system additive in iso-propyl solvent. This was made hardness control possible that user want. And it have very strong adhesion and shear strength properties and is shown the best properties for pigment filling, anti-contractibility, coloring as like epoxy system materials. Particularly, the yellowing and ir-reversibility problem in Epoxy restoration material were finally steadiness. So, there is guarantee in the eternity and stabilization of restoration for antic-celamics. And in order to show the reversible state of the restoration, we successfully dissolve this polyvinyl butyral gap-filling materials in solvent after perfect restoring the Punchong plate from sam-chun temple site subsequently.

  • To do conservation for ceramics, sometimes it needs to clean the ceramics chemically to remove stains on the ceramics, which should be performed with caution. This study will provide quantitative data about the extraction characteristics of major elements from ceramics through the soaking test to evaluate the stability of ceramic cleaning agents. As soft textured pottery(fired at $700^{\circ}C$) had high absorption, it showed higher extraction characteristics in short soaking time. Especially the strong acid among chemical cleaning agents caused the expoliation and the color change on the surface of soft textured pottery. But these color change had no effect on the physical characteristics of soft textured pottery. The hard textured pottery(fired at $1,000^{\circ}C$) is relatively stable in the cleaning agent because it is ascertained the extraction of that was not enough and also it had little chromatic and physical change by strong acid. Porcelains(Celadon, Whiteware and Puncheong ware) was safer than the soft textured pottery due to their low extraction. But it should take precautions to clean the porcelains with lots of cracklewares such like Puncheong ware chemically in connection with the extraction characteristics and their cracklewares.
