Microstructure and Thermal Behaviors of Droplets During the Formation of Particle Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites by Spray Casting Process (분사주조에 의한 입자강화 금속기지 복합재료의 제조시 액적의 열적거동과 미세조직에 대한 고찰)

  • Particle-reinforced metal matrix composites via the Osprey spray casting process were fabricated by injecting second phase particles of $Al_2O_3$(<$40{\mu}m$) and W($6{\mu}m$) into the spray of Cu droplets, and the thermal behaviors of the composite droplets during flight were considered theoretically on the basis of mixing modes between the Cu droplets and the reinforced particulates injected. It was found that the W-injected spray is comprised of particle-embedded droplets, and the $Al_2O_3-injected$ spray comprises particle-attached droplets. From the predicted results of the thermal behaviors of the composite droplets and preforms produced, it is concluded that the thermal behaviors of the composite droplets during flight, and during the subsequent deposition are strongly influenced by its mixing modes between the reinforced particulates and Cu droplets during flight.

  • In the present study, the numerical investigation on the effects of water-mist characteristics has been carried out for the fire suppression mechanism. The FDS are used to simulate the interaction of fire plume and water mists, and program describes the fire-driven flows using LES turbulence model, the mixture fraction combustion model, the finite volume method of radiation transport for a non-scattering gray gas, and conjugate heat transfer between wall and gas flow. The numerical model is consisted of a rectangular enclosure of $L{\times}W{\times}H=1.5{\times}1.5{\times}2.0m$ and a water mist nozzle that be installed 1.8m from fire pool. In the study, the parameters of nozzle for simulation are the droplet size and the spray velocity. Finally, the droplet size influences to fire flume on fire suppression than spray velocity because of the effect of terminal velocity, and the optimal condition for fire suppression is that the droplet size and the spray velocity are $100{\mu}m$ and 20m/s, respectively.

  • Recently, according to increase in the requirement of electric power, a thermoelectric power plant equipped with pulverized coal combustion system is highly valued, because coal has abundant deposits and a low price compared with others. For efficient use of coal fuel, most of plant makers are studying to improve combustion performance and flame stability, and reduce pollutants emission. One of these studies is how to control the profile of particle injection and velocity dependant on coal nozzle configuration. Basically, nozzle which has mixed flow of gas and particle is required to have the balanced coal concentration at exit, but it is very difficult to obtain that by itself without help of other device. In this study, coal distribution and pressure drop in gas-solid flow are calculated by numerical method in nozzle with various shapes of venturi diffuser as a means to get even coal particle distribution. The tentative correlations of pressure drop and exit coal distribution are deduced as function of the height, length and reducing angle of venturi from the calculated results. When coal hurner nozzle is designed, these equations are very useful to optimize the shape of venturi which minimize uneven particle distribution and pressure drop within coal nozzle.

A Study on the Applicability of Copper Slag as Drainage Material (산업폐기물인 동슬래그의 배수재로서의 활용에 관한 연구)

  • Within a country, owing to the restriction of aggregate which have been supplied to construction sites, applicability of byproducts such as the copper slag is expected to be more reasonable. In this study, on the basis of characteristics, grain distribution and environmental stability of copper slag, its engineering application was estimated as the vertical and horizontal drainage material. As a results of laboratory tests, it was shown that the permeability of the copper slag was similar to that of sands under vertical drainage condition. In addition, the copper slag showed higher critical hydraulic gradient than that of sand under upward vertical flow state. The copper slag has potential safety against piping and it that the copper slag is suitable for drainage and filter material.

  • In this study, the optical depth is analyzed with the effects of droplet size distribution of the water curtain nozzle to attenuate the radiative heat transfer. The HELOS/VARIO equipment is used for the measurement of the droplet size distributions. The spray characteristics are quantified by the investigation of Deirmenjian's modified gamma distribution function. The distribution constant of the nozzle can be obtained as ${\alpha}=1$ and ${\gamma}=5.2$. The generalized equation of the optical depth related with the droplet size distribution is introduced. These results will be applicable to the analysis of the design condition of the water curtain nozzle.

Polishing Characteristics and Development of Automatic Die Polishing Machine by Liquid Honing (액체호닝에 의한 금형 자동 사상기계개발 및 가공 특성)

  • The automatic die polishing machine by liquid honing has been developed and experimented on the surface of machined die. The goal of development in the automatic die polishing machine by liquid honing is to increase the accuracy and the productivity in die polishing. To reach this goal, the polishing machine consists of the automatic measuring device for contour of die, the nozzle and pumping system to spray the powder mixed with liquid, and the 3-axis guides. Before polishing, the measuring device with a semiconductor laser scans the surface of mould to get the data of contour. The data store a PC and use to control the nozzle head to move above a couple of centimeters on the machined surface of die. The experimental parameters are the spraying time, the pressure, the size of abrasive grain and the mixing ratio between abrasive grain and liquid. The surface roughness is measured on the polished die which are SKDl 1 and Al7075 machined by NC. The surface roughness indicates the values of Rmax 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for Al7075 and Rmax 1.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for SKDl 1. It reduces the polishing time significantly and reduces the monotonous work for labors. As the results, the liquid honing system is useful method to apply for the die polishing and the automatic die polishing machine using liquid honing shows that it's very effective processing ability.

  • The cleaning process of contaminant particles adhering to the microchips, integrated circuits (ICs) or the like is essential in modern microelectronics industry. In the cleaning process particularly working with the application of inert gases, the removal of contaminant particles of submicron scale is very difficult because the particles are prone to reside inside the boundary layer of the working fluid, The use of cryogenic $CO_2$ cleaning method is increasing rapidly as an alternative to solve this problem. In contrast to the merits of high efficiency of this process in the removal of minute particles compared to the others, even fundamental parametric studies for the optimal process design in this cleaning process are hardly done up to date, In this study, we attempted to measure the cleaning efficiency with the variations of some principal parameters such as mass flow rate, injection distance and angle, and tried to draw out optimal cleaning conditions by measuring and evaluating an effective cleaning width called $d_{50}$.

Resuspension of Cohesive Sediment under Presence of Gas Bubbles (기포에 의한 점착성 퇴적물의 부유)

  • The elimination and erosion of cohesive sediments in port and reservoir water can so far be processed only with mechanical evacuation methods under extreme energy expenditure. The so-called flushing jets do not serve the purpose because they cannot set the material spaciously in motion despite high shear stresses at the bed. Therefore this study aims to examine the resuspension of the deposited fine material($Al_{2}O_3$) under presence of gas bubbles in order to decreased cohesive sediments in multipurpose dam, port and lakes. In the case of laboratory trial important parameters considered are supplied amount of air and the consolidation time of the solid materials. With increasing gas content alumina remains in suspension at high pH values in the laboratory test, where the particles fall mote rapidly without air addition.

Combustion Characteristics of the Slinger Combustor (슬링거 연소기의 연소특성)

  • The study was performed to understand combustion characteristics of the slinger combustor. Liquid fuel is discharged radially outwards through injection holes drilled in the high speed rotating shaft. We observed atomizing characteristics with variation of fuel nozzle rotating speed by using PDPA system. The mean drop diameter highly depends on fuel nozzle rotating speed. In KARI combustion test facility, Ignition and combustion tests were performed by using real scale combustor. In the test results, ignition and combustion efficiency were increased according to increasing fuel nozzle rotating speed. The measured radial temperature distribution at the combustor exit shows stable and fairly good distribution.

Characteristics of ultrafine $SiO_2$ particle synthesized by Electro-hydyodynamic spray (전기-수력학적 분사에 의해 합성된 초미세 $SiO_2$ 입자의 특성)

  • Ultrafine particles have been used widely in many high technology industrial areas. The spherical nonagglomerated and uniform nanometer-size $SiO_2$ particles are synthesized by the direct injection of TEOS(Tetraethyorthosilicate) using electro-hydrodynamic spray ins method. Electro-hydrodynamic spray can generate in the range of submicron-size TEOS particles with high electric charge by applying a high electric field between the liquid injection nozzle and the reaction tube. This TEOS particles are thermally decomposed or oxidized to produce nanometresized $SiO_2$ particles in the reaction tube. Spherical, nonagglomerated and ultrafine particle generated and examined at furnaced temperature, $800^{\circ}C$ and TEOS flowrate of 0.49 or $1.00cm^3/hr$ using SEM and SMPS. As the total gas flowrate changes from 1.51pm to 5.01pm, the mean diameter of $SiO_2$ particle decreases from 120 nm to 68nm.
