  • Fatigue cracks of the turbocharger are often observed for high performance engines under thermal shock tests. Maximum exhaust gas temperature of recently developed gasoline engines could reach approximately $950^{\circ}C$. It's very important to estimate transient temperature histories during thermal shock cycles to predict the stress and the fatigue life of the turbocharger. With these temperature profiles, temperature-dependent material properties and boundary conditions, we could identify critical locations by the application of finite element simulation technologies. In this paper, we applied the reliable analysis approach to the actual turbocharger to predict the weak locations due to the repetitions of plastic strains and compared the results with the crack locations under physical engine test.

  • Numerical simulations on the close-coupled supersonic gas atomizer for metallic powder production were performed in this study. A proper turbulence model was chosen and then VOF(Volume of Fluid) and DPM(Discrete Phase Model) methods were sequentially applied for the simulations of primary and secondary break-up processes of liquid metal. Diameters of parent droplets were calculated by analyzing Level-Set function contour from the VOF result. Finally, the distribution of particle diameter was obtained from the DPM result at exit of the computational domain.

  • Recently, ultrafine particles emitted from internal combustion engine is main concern because of its well known adverse health effects. So Europe decided to start the regulation about diesel engine particle number emissions. The nanoparticles smaller than 50nm in diameter have the ability to penetrate deep into interstitial tissue of luge, where they may cause severe respiratory inflammation and acute pulmonary toxicity. Recent studies have showed that spark ignition engines emit particles number concentration comparable to those from diesel engines with DPF under high load and rich mixture conditions, including cold starts and acceleration. So this study investigated emission characteristics of ultrafine particles according to fuel injection type in gasoline vehicles and LPG vehicles. The test vehicles were tested on CVS-75 and NEDC vehicle test mode using the chassis dynamometer, CPC system applied as a particle measuring instrument at the end of dilution tunnel. As a result, the correlation between fuel injection type and particulate emission was determined. GDI vehicle emitted 10 times higher particles than PFI vehicles, and compared to Mixer and LPGI type LPG vehicle, LPLI vehicle emitted particles high.

  • The ignition characteristics of liquid rocket engine thrust chambers which have been developed by domestic technology were analyzed through hot-firing tests. Thrust chambers used in hot-firing tests have different characteristics in terms of the injector for ignition, film cooling method and the position of the oxidizer inlet. Also, these thrust chambers used their respective startup sequences. Analysis results showed that according to temperature profiles of the oxidizer manifold, low frequency fluctuation was appeared in ignition area. This low frequency fluctuation didn't give rise to violent malfunction of the thrust chamber, but the continuous observation as a concern parameter in the side of interfaces with engine system and launch vehicle should be demanded.

  • The fuel pressure regulator mounted on CNG vehicles is used to maintain a constant pressure in the fuel injection system. It needs precise fuel pressure control to obtain benefits of high efficiency and low emissions in CNG vehicles. In this study, a high pressure test rig for the performance evaluation of CNG regulators was introduced. Two different CNG regulators were tested and compared each other at various test conditions. Results showed that dynamic response and creep characteristics are directly effected by the valve assembly design. Gas temperature was dramatically dropped at hish supply pressure conditions, so that effective design for coolant bowl is needed to prevent icing problem.

  • The washing efficiency of two types of washing machine- drum(drum washing) and drum using steam jet system(steam drum washing) was studied. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the performance of new steam drum washing. The relationship between washing temperature and washing efficiency(reflectance(%)) by soil removal, and that between washing temperature and electric energy consumption, Fabric damage evaluated by Danish wear method, Fabric shrinkage(%) during laundering were investigated, and compared with those in drum washing machine. Washing efficiency of steam drum washing according to washing temperature is better than that of drum washing. Electric energy consumption and fabric damage in steam drum washing are lower than those of drum washing. Fabric damage increased as washing temperature increased. Shrinkage of fabrics in steam drum washing and drum washing are about same. Therefore, we assumed that in the case of steam drum washing using steam jet system, washing efficiency remarkably increased, and fabric damage decreased, even with a lot of saving in given electric energy and water used.

  • The use of clean gaseous fuels for the purpose of high efficiency and low emission in automotive engines has tendency to increase in order to meet the reinforcing emission regulations and to efficiently utilize limited natural resources. Automotive companies developed and commercialized a LPG liquid injection system, which is mounted on LPLi(Liquid Phase LPG Injection) engines and vehicles based on this research trend. This research examines the biggest problem in LPLi engine, that is, the leakage characteristics of low viscosity LPG fuel according to the injector design variables. This study is also aimed to improve the performance of fuel-leakage in LPLi engine through the addition of a lubrication improver in HFRR(High Frequency Reciprocating Rig) facility. The needle displacement and the spring displacement of an LPLi injector are found to be already optimized. The possibility of a maximum of 70% leakage reduction compared to a conventional case, is verified when 1000ppm of a lubrication improvement material is added and 40% increase of a injector spring constant (K) is applied.

  • A laser based needle-free liquid drug injection device has been developed. A laser beam is focused inside the liquid contained in the rubber chamber of micro scale. The focused laser beam causes explosive bubble growth, and the sudden volume increase in a sealed chamber drives a microjet of liquid drug through the micronozzle. The exit diameter of a nozzle is 125 ${\mu}m$ and the injected microjet reaches an average velocity of 264 m/s. This device adds the time-varying feature of microjet to the current state of liquid injection for drug delivery.

  • Large eddy simulation was conducted for flow development in a chamber with wall injection which simulates the cold flow in an idealized hybrid rocket motor. It was found that a peculiar timescale, roughly corresponding to St~0.5, resides in the flowfield resulting from the interaction between the main oxidizer and wall injected flows. However, the fact that this time characteristics is absent in the temperature field in the vicinity of the wall indicates that even a small regression rate renders the passive scalar, such as temperature, dissimilar to the velocity field. This implies that a classical approach, which assumes that constant turbulent Prandtl number, should be replaced by a more sophisticated turbulence models to accurately predict the temperature field in the hybrid motor.
