Spray Characteristics of Impinging Injectors in Crossflows (횡방향 유동에서 충돌형 분사기의 액체제트 분무 특성)

  • Spray characteristics of the impinging injectors in subsonic crossflows were experimentally studied and compared with the plain-orifice injectors. By changing the impingement angle (60, 90, 120) which is the same orifice length to diameter ratio (L/d = 5), spray characteristics were investigated. In the view of the top view from the impinging injectors, as the impingement angle increases, the liquid column breakup length in the y-direction was decreased. On the other hand, when the impinging injector is viewed from the side view, the breakup length in the x direction is smaller than the previous plain-orifice injectors, which mean that the atomizing performance of the impingement-type injector is better than that of the single-hole orifice.

  • Four swirl coaxial injectors with different recess lengths were manufactured using an additive manufacturing method. Single-injection and bi-injection cold-flow experiments were performed using water and air as simulated propellants in an atmospheric pressure environment. According to the recess length and propellant flow conditions, the injection pressure drop and discharge coefficient were investigated, and the breakup length and spray angle were measured using an image processing technique. In the bi-injection pressure drop and discharge coefficient results, the liquid-side injector was not affected by the recess. For the gas-side injector, however, the injection pressure drop increased and the discharge coefficient decreased as the recess length increased. The breakup length in the single-injection increased with the increase of the recess, but decreased in the bi-injection.

  • The role of the injector as an acoustic resonator is studied for the high performance rocket engine adopting the gas-liquid scheme injector. Acoustic behavior in the combustor with single injector is investigated numerically adopting linear acoustic analysis for cold condition. Acoustic-damping effect of the injector is evaluated by damping factor as a function of the injector length. From the numerical results, it is found that the injector can play a significant role in acoustic damping and the optimum length of the injector corresponds to half of a full wavelength of the longitudinal mode with the acoustic frequency to be damped in the chamber. In baffled chamber, the optimum lengths of the injector are calculated as a function of baffle length for both cold and hot conditions.

  • Spray characteristics of liquid jets in crossflow, which can be observed in the liquid jet injection system of a gas turbine or ramjet engine, were experimentally investigated. By measuring liquid jet penetration in the case of single orifice and double orifice injectors, the experimental formula for jet penetration was modified to consider penetration distances greater than that considered in a previous study. The changes in spray characteristics resulting from changes in the liquid jet and crossflow pressure, including SMD and jet disintegration, were carefully studied. Specifically, the jet penetration was measured for different injector shapes, and in the case of a double orifice injector, the penetration of the rear orifice jet was found to be greater by approximately 20% ($L_h$ = 4 mm) compared to that in the case of a single orifice injector because of the influence of the front orifice.

  • A study on the variation of combustion characteristics by injector geometries was conducted. Coaxial swirl injectors were used. Existence of swirl chamber and variation of a nozzle length become key parameters. Injectors were identified as open, closed and mixed type by existence of swirl chamber. Variation of nozzle length was made extruding the both nozzle along the axis while other design parameters remain the same. A uni-element combustor with ablative material liner and a water cooled nozzle made by oxygen free copper with outer stainless steel casing were used.

  • Acoustic coupling between combustion chamber and gas-liquid scheme injectors are studied numerically in liquid rocket engine adopting linear acoustic analysis. The injectors can play a role as half-wave resonators. The combustion chamber with numerous injectors shows peculiar acoustic coupling with the injectors. As the injector length approaches a half wavelength or the original tuning length, new injector-coupled acoustic modes show up in the chamber and thereby, the acoustic-damping effect of the tuned injectors is appreciably degraded.

  • In this study, model combustion tests were conducted to investigate the combustion instability characteristics of swirl coaxial injectors for a liquid rocket engine. To examine the effects of the combustion chamber resonant frequency and the injector mixing conditions, pressure fluctuations in the combustion chamber were measured by changing the combustion chamber length, injector recess length, and propellant mixture ratio. From the test results, the variation in the pressure fluctuations for each experimental condition was confirmed and the combustion stability was evaluated by stability mapping. It was found that the longitudinal mode and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities occurred due to the change in the combustion chamber and recess lengths.

  • Effect of elliptical orifice on the spray characteristics of liquid jet ejecting into subsonic crossflows were experimentally studied. Circular/elliptical plain-orifice injectors, which had different ratios of the orifice length to diameter and major axis to minor axis, were used for transverse injection. Compared with the previous research, breakup lengths of elliptical nozzles are shorter than circular nozzles at all experimental condition. Cavitation/hydraulic flip are considered as a reduction in the breakup length at all circular/elliptical nozzle. In the case of liquid column trajectories, major axis which was placed to the crossflows, increases the frontal area of the liquid column exposed to the crossflows. Hence, the aerodynamic force exerted on the jet is increased and the penetration depth is reduced.

  • The spray characteristics of coaxial swirl injector under ambient high pressure conditions were investigated in this paper. Three injectors were used to study the effect of recess length and fuel injector type(open or closed). In this research, experimental conditions(ambient gas density) were calculated by Buckingham Pi-theory and spray characteristics of the injectors were represented by mass flow rate according to the injection pressure, the spray angle, mass distribution, and mean diameter of droplet.
