Effect of Injector Cooling on Ignition of Cryogenic Spray (분사기 냉각이 초저온 분무의 점화에 미치는 영향)

  • The cooling of a injector effects on the vapor pressure of cryogenic oxidizer spray, and it decides the phase transition point at the ignition process, when the combustion chamber pressure increases drastically. The phase transition of oxidizer spray affects the ignition characteristics, and several ignition tests with the LOx/$GCH_4$ uni-element coaxial swirl injector was performed in the different initial temperatures of oxidizer injector, in order to investigate the effect of injector cooling on the ignition transient characteristics. At the transition point of oxidizer phase, where the combustion chamber pressure increased over the LOx vapor pressure, the temporary quenching phenomenon of the flame occurred. The lower temperature of chilled down injector and tubing tends to move up the phase transition earlier.

  • This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of a co-axial swirl injector. Especially to predict the initial liquid sheet thickness and spray cone angle of an outer orifice a concept of effective area was introduced from hydraulic analysis. In addition, the parameters determining the characteristics of a co-axial swirl injector were re-defined around outer orifice. The calculated results-SMD, spray cone angle, and spray thickness agreed well with the test results qualitatively.

  • 슬러리 기포탑 반응기는 열 및 물질 전달의 용이성, 낮은 운전비용 및 장치의 간단성의 장점을 가지고 있어서 Fischer-Tropsch 반응, bio-reaction 등에 많이 응용되고 있다. 그러나 기포탑 반응기 내의 물질 거동은 매우 복잡하기 때문에 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있음에도 불구하고 그 현상에 대한 명확한 이해는 어려운 상황이다. 특히 기포탑반응기내에 기체의 포집율(gas hold-up)을 증가시키는 것을 목적으로 하는 연구들이 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기체의 분사 방향에 따른 기체 포집율의 변화를 관찰하였다. 기체 분사는 0.6 mm의 pore가 66개로 구성된 perforated plate를 통해서 이루어졌고, 수직방향, 수평방향, 45도 그리고 수직/수평 조합의 네 가지 분사방향에 대해서 실험을 수행하였다. 반응기는 내경이 0.15 m이고 높이 2.0 m 아크릴 반응기를 이용하였다. 사용된 연속상은 수돗물을 사용하였고 분산상 기체로는 압축 공기를 이용하였다. 전체적인 기체 포집율은 수직방향의 분사방향에서 가장 높게 측정되었다. 그리고 수직/수평의 조합 분사방향의 경우, 기체 포집율이 가장 낮게 관찰되었다. 이것은 분사방향이 수직/수평으로 서로 엇갈릴 경우, 기포간의 충돌 가능성이 높아지고 bubble coalescence가 증가하였기 때문인 것으로 보인다. 실제로 homogeneous flow regime에서 heterogeneous flow regime으로 전환되는 기체선속도는 분사방향이 수직, 45도, 수평, 수직/수평 조합의 순서로 감소하였다. 즉 이 순서로 기체흐름의 와류가 증가하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 Dynamic Gas Disengagement(DGD) 분석을 통하여 큰 기포가 발생하기 시작하는 기체 선속도의 변화를 관찰하였다. 이 경우, 예상되듯이 수직/수평 조합에서는 1.5 cm/sec 기체 선속도에서 큰 기포가 발생하기 시작한 반면 수직 방향 분사의 경우에는 2.5 cm/sec의 보다 높은 기체 선속도에서 관찰되기 시작하였다. 이러한 현상들을 종합하였을 때, 기체 분사방향을 수직으로 일정하게 했을 때, 기포간 출동을 최소화하고 와류발생을 최대한 지연시키며 전체 기체 포집율을 증가시킬 수 있음을 알 수 있다.

  • Liquid rocket injectors play crucial roles on propulsive performance, combustion stability, and heat transfer characteristics. Nevertheless, their developments have mainly relied on empirical methods and expensive hot-firing tests due to lack of fundamental understanding of high pressure combustion phenomena in the near-injector regions. The present study was motivated by recent efforts to develop reliable modeling of liquid rocket combustion. The turbulent combustion model based on the flamelet concept has been extended to take into account real-fluid behaviors occurred at supercritical pressures, and validated against measurements for a cryogenic nitrogen injection, a non-premixed turbulent jet flame at atmospheric pressure, and a LOx/$GH_2$ coaxial shear injector at a supercritical pressure.

  • Experimental study on combustion characteristics of double swirl coaxial injectors has been conducted for the assessment of critical injector design parameters. A reusable, subscale thrust chamber has been fabricated with a water-cooled copper nozzle. Two different configurations of injectors have been tested for the understanding of the effects of recess length on high pressure combustion. Clearly, the recess length drastically affects the combustion efficiency and hydraulic characteristics of an injector. Internal mixing of propellants in an injector with recess number of two increases a combustion efficiency and reveals sound combustion although a pressure drop required for the same amount of mass flow rates increases compared with an injector of recess number of one.

  • 인공위성의 궤도진입에 사용되는 액체추진제 로켓엔진의 개발에서 분사기 설계를 적절히 수정, 보완 할 목적으로 수행된 핵심부품별 유동해석의 내용이 기술되었다. 단일 격자계를 구성하기 어려운 복잡한 형상의 분사기 유동장에 대한 격자계 구성을 용이하게 하고, 3차원의 점성 유동해석을 컴퓨터 기억 용량에 제한없이 수행하기 위한 다중블럭 격자기법이 사용되었다. 분사기의 내부유동은 3차원 비압축성 Navier-Stokes 방정식으로 pseudocompressibility 방법을 이용하여 수치모사되었다. 정상상태의 해는 근사 인자분해에 의한 ADI 기법으로 계산되고, 공간미분항에 대해 nonstaggered 격자계에서 2차 중앙차분을 사용하며 수치해의 안정성을 위해 인공점성항을 추가하였다. 난류계산을 위해 Baldwin- Lomax의 대수적 난류모델에 다수의 벽면효과를 고려하였다. 해석결과는 분사기의 성능에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 유동조건에 따라 분석되었다.

Combustion Stability Rating Test under Low Pressure Condition of a 75-tonf-class LRE Thrust Chamber (75톤급 액체로켓엔진 연소기의 저압 조건에서 수행된 연소안정성 시험)

  • Combustion stability rating tests of 75-tonf-class thrust chamber for technology demonstration were carried out at a low pressure. Two kinds of mixing heads were used in this study. One of them has injectors of 631 and the other has injectors of 721. Mixing head with injectors of 631 showed a self-oscillation instability at the chamber pressure of 30 bar. Mixing head with injectors of 721 showed that a high frequency combustion stability was maintained under the same pressure and the same mass flow rate. But mixing head with injectors of 721 generated a self-oscillation instability at the chamber pressure of 20 bar and it was found that stability boundary region was changed due to the configuration of a mixing head from these results.

  • With the mathematic linear model of a combustor which consists of a combustion chamber and injectors, the analysis of low frequency dynamic characteristics of a liquld-propellant rocket engine combustor was performed. Propellant mass flowrate was varied by combustion chamber pressure feedback, therefore low frequency oscillation was appeared. Increasing the time constant of a combustion chamber and injector pressure differences and decreasing combustion time delay increased the combustor system stability. The variation of injector time constant little affected stability. The system was always stable, when there was no combustion time delay. Increasing combustion time delay decreased oscillation frequency and damping ratio, and the system eventually became unstable.

  • This study investigated the spray modeling of the pressure-swirl atomizer installed in liquid rocket engine and the effect of drop distribution function especially. The $X^2$, originally implemented to KIVA, Rosin-Rammler and modified Rosin-Rammler distribution functions were investigated theoretically and compared to each other. Also, they were applied to pressure-swirl atomizer similar to the injector installed in liquid rocket engine to evaluate the feasibility for LRE injector. Among the distribution functions, original Rosin-Rammler distribution function was the most compatible with predicting the spray characteristics of pressure-swirl atomizer installed in liquid rocket engine.

  • Spray and Mixing characteristics of the unlike impinging triplet injectors (F-O-F, O-F-O) were investigated with the variation of the momentum ratio of oxidizer to fuel. The spray pattern was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique, and mixing efficiency was measured using a mechanical patternator. Kerosene/water were used as a propellant simulant. From the experimental results, it is found that a O-F-O type injector has a good atomization. And as the momentum ratio increases, the mixing efficiency decreases rapidly.
