  • Landslides occur due to heavy rainfall in the summer season. Some of water may infiltrate into the ground; it causes a high saturation condition capable of causing a landslide. Soil properties are crucial in estimating slope stability and debris flow occurrence. The main study areas are Gwanaksan, Suraksan and Bukhansan (Mountain) in Seoul. A total of 44 soil samples were taken from the study area; and a series of geotechnical tests were performed. Physical and mechanical properties were obtained and compared based on region. As a result, among well-graded soils, they are classified as a clayey sand. Coarse-grained and fine-grained contents are approximately 95% and 5%, respectively, with very low amount of clay content. Density, liquid limit and dry unit weight are ranged in $2.62{\sim}2.67g/cm^3$, 27.93~38.15% and $1.092{\sim}1.814g/cm^3$. Cohesion and internal friction angle are 4 kPa and $35^{\circ}$ regardless of mountain area. Coefficient of permeability is varied between $3.07{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}4.61{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$; it means that it results in great seepage. Permeability is inversely proportional to the uniformity coefficient and is proportional to the effective particle size. In the formal case, there was a difference by mountain area, while in the latter, the tendency was almost similar.

  • A Potential acid sulfate soil derived from continental Holocene deposits on the fan-base was found and it was characterized with improvement practices. Artesian wells were scattered in the area, and the imperfectly drained soils were featured by having fine loamy with 7~30% of gravels. The potential acid sulfate soil layers were typified by having darkness in color with around 3.3~3.8% of O.M. and 0.34~0.41% of total sulfur. Soil pH ranged from 3.4 to 3.8 but it was decreased to 1.9~2.5 after oxidation with $H_2O_2$. Ground water sprang out from an artesian well contained a high amount of minerals such as Na, Ca, Mg, K, etc. and about 80ppm of sulfate which seemed to be responsible for pyrite formation. The soil was classified to member of "Fine loamy, mixed, acid, mesic, sulfic Haplaquepts" in taxonomically, and "weak potential acid sulfate soils" in interpretatively. The installation of tile drains with adding fine earth and liming were effective. However, the pH goes down to 4.8 again after 3 years of improvement practices.

  • In this study, the soil characteristics are analyzed using the result of various soil tests as an object of the soil layer of natural slopes in landslides areas. Also, the relationship with landslides and interrelation with each soil properties are analyzed. The landslides in three areas with different geological condition are occurred due to heavy rainfall in same time. The geology of Jangheung area, Sangju area and Pohang area is gneiss, granite, and the tertiary sedimentary rock, respectively. However soil characteristics have a little differentiation to geological condition, the soils sampled from landslide area have higher proportion of fine particle and porosity, and lower density than those from non landslide area. In case of same geological condition, landslides are occurred in the terrain slope with high permeability. The permeability is mainly influenced by the soil characteristics such as particle size distribution, porosity, particle structure, and the geological origins such as weathering, sedimentary environment. The soil layer with high internal friction angle is more stable than that with low internal friction angle in all geological condition. The permeability is mainly influenced by effective particle size, coefficient of uniformity, coefficient of gradation, porosity, density and so on. Also, those have interrelation with each factor. These interrelations are similar in all study area. Meanwhile, in proportion as the void ratio and the porosity rises the permeability increases.

  • This study was carried out to find the physico-chemical properties of soils and the rice growth at the pilot project rice farm of Buchanan city, Liberia. The results were as follows. Soils were classified as Plinthic Ferralsols. Real tropical soils had an oxic B horizon of 30cm thick with diffused horizon boundaries. The surface soils have Ochric A horizon with low organic matter. Plinthite was distributed throughout the whole soil profile unevenly. Exposed to sun light, Plinthite was dried out, hardened, and developed irreversibly into ironstone. There were 286 termite hills in 20ha in the project area. The pH value of the termite hills was higher than that of the ordinary soil two units. Soils of the termite hills had higher contents of carbon, nitrogen, available phosphate and exchangeable bases, especially calcium(2,000mg/kg). Available Fe contents was 230~330mg/kg in the surface soil, and 2,200mg/kg in the subsoil. This caused bronzing of rice in a few days after transplanting. The tolerance of Fe toxicity was lower in Korean cultivars than in Liberian cultivars. The tolerant cultivar was Hangang among Korean cultivars and Nizersail and Suakoko 8 among Liberian cultivars. Area weighted average percolation rate was 8.3mm/day and infiltration rate was 2~2.5mm/hr.

  • This study was conducted to reclassify Namweon series, black volcanic ash soils, in Jeju Island based on the second edition of Soil Taxonomy : A Basic System of Soil Classification for Making and Interpreting Soil Surveys. Morphological properties of typifying pedon of Namweon series were investigated and physicochemical properties were analyzed according to Soil Survey Laboratory Methods Manual. The typifying pedon of Namweon series has black (10YR 2/1) silt loam Ap horizon (0~11 cm) and black (10YR 2/1) silt loam BA horizon (11~72 cm). Bw horizon (72~100 cm) is very dark brown (10YR 2/2) silt loam. That occurs on lava plain derived from volcanic ash materials. The typifying pedon contains 5.2~6.4% oxalate extractable (Al + 1/2 Fe), over 85% phosphate retention, and lower bulk density than $0.90Mg\;m^{-3}$. Ap, BA, and Bw horizons of the pedon have andic soil properties. That can be classified as Andisol. The typifying pedon has an udic soil moisture regime and has a 1,500 kPa water retention of 15% or more on air-dried samples throughout all horizons, and can be classified as Udand. Ap and BA horizons (0~72 cm) have a color value, moist, and chroma of 2 or less, melanic index of 1.70 or less, and 6% or more organic carbon. That meets the requirements of melanic epipedon. That keys out as Melanudand. That has more than 6.0% organic carbon and the colors of mollic epipedon throughout a layer 50 cm or more thick within 60 cm of the mineral soil surface.. Thus, that keys out as Pachic Melanudand. The pedon has a fine-earth fraction that has a water content at 1,500 kPa tension of 12% or more on air-dried samples and has less than 35% (by volume) rock fragments. Thus, the substitute for particle-size class is medial. That has a sum of 8 times the Si (percnt by weight extracted by acid oxalate) plus 2 times the Fe (percnt by weight extracted by acid oxalate) of 5 or more, and 2 times the Fe is more than 8 times the Si. Thus, the mineralogy class is ferrihydritic. Namweon series can be classified as medial, ferrihydritic, thermic family of Pachic Melanudands, not as ashy, thermic family of Typic Melanudands.

  • This research is aimed at investigating the ground characterization of the Cheongju granite area using the geophysical methods. Test site was chosen from the building site in Chungbuk University, Chongju, Chungbuk province. Furthermore, geophysical methods are employed on the outcrops in the east to map the distribution of fault and intrusion and reveal the degree of weathering. The subsurface structure mapped from seismic re-fraction survey mainly consists of two units of weathered soil and rock. Threshold of the units were determined on the basis of seismic velocity of 800 m/s, supported from the standard classification table. From the results of standard penetrating test(SPT), these units are found to show medium-high and high density, respectively. Weathering soil is subdivided in unsaturated layer and saturated layer with thresholds of seismic velocity (500 m/s) and resistivity (200 ohm-m). In particular, unsaturated layer is again classified into dry and wet portions using the GPR section. The boundary between unsaturated and saturated weathering soils corresponds to the groundwater table at depth of approximately 5~6.2 m, which is well correlated with the one from drill-core data. However, bedrock is not delineated by geophysical methods. In the GPR section, fault and intrusion observed on the outcrop are revealed not to extend to the building site. With respect to weathering degree, the outcrop characterized by low resistivity and velocity corresponds to the grade of 'completely weathered' from the geotechnical investigations.

  • The Landslide in natural slope is occurred mostly by a heavy rain of the summer. This landslide is influenced in soil property of the surface than the rock mass. Soils in natural slope are created by weathering phenomena of the bedrock. These soils differed to the geological conditions such as sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock and volcanic rock. Therefore, estimation of landslide in natural slope is the most important analysis of the bedrock distributions and soil characteristics. This study analyzed the soil property to the natural slopes of Busan area where is distributed to volcanic rock, granite and sedimentary rock. Soil sample conducted various soil tests for estimate the soil physical property and soil engineering characteristics, and analysis of the correlation of geological conditions. In the experiment result, soils were mainly classified by a clayey sand. It is also established that $1.07{\sim}1.99kg/cm^3$ for wet density, $28.2{\sim}39.6^{\circ}$ for angle of shearing resistance, and $8.10{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}8.38{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$ for coefficient of permeability. From the physical parameter, the soils are estimated to the permeable ground with good shear strength, and soil properties are showed a differential tendency for each geological condition.

  • This study was carried out to examine and compare the changes of inhabitation of soil microarthropoda after forest fire between different types of forest; i.e. the coniferous forest (Mt. Chocdae) and the broad-leaved forest (Samsinbong in Mt. Chiri). The individuals of soil microarthropoda found at the burned and unburned areas of Samsinbong and Mt. Chocdae were 12 orders in 5 classes, and individuals of Insecta and Arachnida 98% of them. In respect of classification groups, Collembola order was high at the burned and unburned areas of coniferous forest, while Acari order was high at the broad-leaved area. When classified by soil depth, the total number of soil microarthropoda individuals inhabiting at Samsinbong, the broad-leaved forest, was 25,342 and 37,350 at 1~5cm depth of burned and unburned areas respectively, while at 5~10cm depth the number turned out 9,722 and 15,906. Soil microarthropoda individuals of unburned area was 1.6 times higher than for the burned area. At the coniferous forest, the number marked 31,665 and 51,431, respectively for 1~5cm depth of burned and unburned area, and 10,189 and 13,202 for 5~10cm depth. Here also, the number for the unburned area was examined to be 1.4 times higher than for the burned area.
