  • With the advent of super-conducting magnet, NMR spectroscopy becomes a very important tool in geology as well as in chemistry. $^{29}Si$ and $^{27}Al$ which are the main components of minerals and contain structural informations, are useful major targets for the NMR study in geology, but some other elements including alkali cations such as $^{23}Na$ are also one of them. NMR can be applied to many different fields. For example, it can be applied to study smaller range of structure (in molecular level) than XRD and TEM. NMR provides us with structural informations such as order-disorder in Al and Si distribution, oxygen coordination number, and distribution of other cations. Another important information that we can obtain from NMR is not only the static structural informations, but also the molecular dynamics. This dynamic informations of molecules also enable us to figure out the frequency of molecular motion and activation energy. Structure of amorphous minerals and chemistry and structure of natural organic materials are also studied by NMR.

  • [ $AIFeO_3$ ]has been studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer, Mossbauer spectroscopy. The crystal structure is found to orthorhombic with the lattice parameters being $a_0=4.983\;{\AA},\;b_0=8.554\;{\AA},\;c_0=9.239\;{\AA}$, Magnetic hysteresis curve for $AIFeO_3$ showed weakly ferromagnetic phase at room temperature and a asymmetric shape dependent on the direction of applied field at low temperature. The Curie temperature determined by the temperature dependence of magnetization is 250 K. Mossbauer spectra of $AIFeO_3$ have been taken from 4.2 K to 295 K. Isomer shift at room temperature are found to be $0.11\~0.32\;mm/s$, which is consistent with ferric state. The absorption lines widths become broader with increasing temperature, which is attributed to the Fe ions distribution of each cation site and anisotropy energy difference of each sublattice.

  • The procedure for estimating the gas (rotational) temperature of an air discharge in supersonic flows is presented in detail. Since direct measurement of the temperature in a supersonic flow is difficult, a nonintrusive measurement was performed by optical emission spectroscopy based on the emission spectra of nitrogen molecular ions. A detailed explanation, including the equations for emission line intensity, is presented in order to understand the structure of the emission spectra of nitrogen molecular ions. Using the obtained representation for emission spectrum, a synthetic spectrum of the first negative system of $N_2^+$ is obtained, and it is compared with the experimentally measured spectrum. Within a relative error of approximately 6.8% for the overall band spectra, the synthetic and measured spectra agree well. In the case of a 25-mA DC air discharge in a supersonic (Mach 3) flow, the gas temperature profile shows an approximately linear variation and a peak temperature of approximately 350 K.

  • This paper proposes classification of multi-spectral satellite image based on fusion of fuzzy G-K (Gustafson-Kessel) algorithm and PCM algorithm. The suggested algorithm establishes the initial cluster centers by selecting training data from each category, and then executes the fuzzy G-K algorithm. PCM algorithm perform using classification result of the fuzzy G-K algorithm. The classification categories are allocated to the corresponding category when the results of classification by fuzzy G-K algorithm and PCM algorithm belong to the same category. If the classification result of two algorithms belongs to the different category, the pixels are allocated by Bayesian maximum likelihood algorithm. Bayesian maximum likelihood algorithm uses the data from the interior of the average intracluster distance. The information of the pixels within the average intracluster distance has a positive normal distribution. It improves classification result by giving a positive effect in Bayesian maximum likelihood algorithm. The proposed method is applied to IKONOS and Landsat TM remote sensing satellite image for the test. As a result, the overall accuracy showed a better outcome than individual Fuzzy G-K algorithm and PCM algorithm or the conventional maximum likelihood classification algorithm.

  • We investigated the kinematic activity of the Type II Seyfert galaxy Mrk 1 based on H𝛽 and [O III] 5007 extracted from the MR 1 grism spectra observed with the OASIS attached to the CFHT 3.6 m telescope. The [O III] forbidden Gaussian line profiles exhibited asymmetric features with an excess of the blue component: (1) strongest at a distance of about 960 pc from the galaxy center, and (2) a wider line width of about ~900 km s-1 in the NS direction of the center. The velocity distributions in the spectral images showed blue or approaching flow motion in the NE zone, while receding in the SW zone, implying the counter-clockwise rotation. The radial velocity data showed that the center of the AGN region appears to be blocked by gas-dust approaching toward the Earth.

  • In this study, aerosol size distributions were retrieved from aerosol optical depth measured over a range of 10 wavelengths from 250 to 1100 nm. The 10 wavelengths were selected where there is no absorption of atmospheric gases. To obtain the solar spectrum, a home-made solar tracking system was developed and calibrated. Using this solar tracking system, total optical depths (TODs) were extracted for the 10 wavelengths using the Langley plot method, and aerosol optical depths (AODs) were obtained after removing the effects of gas absorption and Rayleigh scattering from the TODs. The algorithm for retrieving aerosol size distributions was suggested by assuming a bimodal aerosol size distribution. Aerosol size distributions were retrieved and compared under various arbitrary atmospheric conditions. Finally, we found that our solar tracking spectrometer is useful for retrieving the aerosol size distribution, even though we have little information about the aerosol's refractive index.

  • To investigate differences between the metabolic ratios of normal controls and brain tumors such as astrocytomas and glioblastoma multiforme (GM) by proton MR spectroscopy (MRS) at 37 high field system. Using 3T MRI/MRS system, localized water-suppressed single-voxel technique in patients with brain tumors was employed to evaluate spectra with peaks of N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline-containing compounds (Cho), creatine/phosphocreatine (Cr) and lactate. On the basis of Cr, these peak areas were quantificated as a relative ratio. The variation of metabolites measurements of the designated region in 10 normal volunteers was less than 10%. Normal ranges of NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratios were 1.67$\pm$018 and 1.16$\pm$0.15, respectively. NAA/Cr ratio of all tumor tissues was significantly lower than that of the normal tissues (P=0.005). Cho/Cr ratio of glioblastoma multiforme was significantly higher than that of astrocytomas (P=0.001). Lactate was observed in all tumor cases. The present study demonstrated that the neuronal degradation or loss was observed in all tumor tissues. Higher grade of brain tumors was correlated with higher Cho/Cr ratio, indicating a significant dependence of Cho levels on malignancy of gliomas. This results suggest that clinical proton MR spectroscopy could be useful to predict tumor malignancy.

  • Accurate and effective mapping is critical step to monitor the spatial distribution and change of flood inundated area in large scale flood event. In this study, we try to suggest methods to use low spatial resolution satellite optical imagery for flood mapping, which has high temporal resolution to cover wide geographical area several times per a day. We selected the Sebou watershed flood in Morocco that was occurred in early 2010, in which several hundred $km^2$ area of the Gharb lowland plain was inundated. MODIS daily surface reflectance product was used to detect the flooded area. The study area showed several distinct spectral patterns within the flooded area, which included pure turbid water and turbid water with vegetation. The flooded area was extracted by thresholding on selected band reflectance and water-related spectral indices. Accuracy of these flooding detection methods were assessed by the reference map obtained from Landsat-5 TM image and qualitative interpretation of the flood map derived. Over 90% of accuracies were obtained for three methods except for the NDWI threshold. Two spectral bands of SWIR and red were essential to detect the flooded area and the simple thresholding on these bands was effective to detect the flooded area. NIR band did not play important role to detect the flooded area while it was useful to separate the water-vegetation mixed flooded classes from the purely water surface.

  • In this study, a novel soft information based most probable classification scheme is proposed for sorting recyclable metal alloys with laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Regression analysis with LIBS captured spectrums for estimating concentrations of common elements can be efficient for classifying unknown arbitrary metal alloys, even when that particular alloy is not included for training. Therefore, partial least square regression (PLSR) is employed in the proposed scheme, where spectrums of the certified reference materials (CRMs) are used for training. With the PLSR model, the concentrations of the test spectrum are estimated independently and are compared to those of CRMs for finding out the most probable class. Then, joint soft information can be obtained by assuming multi-variate normal (MVN) distribution, which enables to account the probability measure or a prior information and improves classification performance. For evaluating the proposed schemes, MVN soft information is evaluated based on PLSR of LIBS captured spectrums of 9 metal CRMs, and tested for classifying unknown metal alloys. Furthermore, the likelihood is evaluated with the radar chart to effectively visualize and search the most probable class among the candidates. By the leave-one-out cross validation tests, the proposed scheme is not only showing improved classification accuracies but also helpful for adaptive post-processing to correct the mis-classifications.

  • Organic pollution is one of the most common forms of water contamination. Under the Water Quality Conservation Act, indicators for measuring organic substances include BOD, COD, and TOC. Analysis of BOD and COD is labor-intensive, and in the case of organic substances where biological decomposition is not feasible or toxic substances are present, the accuracy is often low. Therefore, the Ministry of Environment is shifting towards TOC-centric management. With advancements in sensor technology today, various parameters can be monitored using sensors. In this study, digital monitoring of river TOC using a spectrophotometer called Spectro::lyser V3 was conducted. Initially, experiments were carried out at the Andong River Experiment Center to assess the applicability of the measurement equipment. Subsequently, data collected at the confluence of the Nakdong River was analyzed for the spatial distribution of TOC using the Kriging technique. This research proposes the utilization of sensors for river TOC monitoring and spatial distribution analysis. Real-time monitoring of changes in river TOC concentration can serve as fundamental data for pollution monitoring and response. Sensor-based river monitoring offers advantages in terms of temporal resolution and real-time data acquisition. When various spatial information interpretation methods are applied, it is expected to contribute to diverse studies such as aquatic ecological health, river water source selection, and stratification analysis in the future.
