  • Ultraviolet spectrophotometric investigations were carried out on the systems of o-, m-and p-xylene with iodine in carbon tetrachloride. The results reveal the formation of one to one molecular complexes of the type, $C_6H_4(CH_3)_2{\cdot}I_2. $The equilibrium constants of complexes were obtained in consideration of that absorption maxima has the blue shift with the increasing temperatures according to the formation of the charge transfer complexes. The thermodynamic parameters, $ {\Delta}$H, $ {\Delta}$G and $ {\Delta}$S for the formation of the charge transfer complexes were calculated from these values. These results combined with previous study of this series indicated that the relative stabilities of the polymethylbenzene complexes with iodine increase in the order, Benzene < Toluene < o-Xylene < p-Xylene These results are supposed to be the influence resulted from increase of electron density by the positive inductive effect and the steric hindrance effect.

  • Dowex 1-X8 resin ion exchanged with calcon carboxylic acid (CCA-Dowex 1-X8) and 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline(MHQ) impregnated-Amberlite XAD-4 resin (MHQ-XAD-4) were examined for the separation and preconcentration of ferric ion from the various matrices. The stabilities of these resins were investigated, and their capacities on ferric ion were also measured. The effect of pH on the adsorption of ferric ion and matrix ions, such as Al(Ⅲ) and Ca(Ⅱ), was investigated to determine the optimun pH ranges. Separation and preconcentration of iron in aluminium foil and mineral water samples were studied by elution method with these resin columns. The recovered ions by 10ml of 2F nitric acid was determined by flame atomic spectrophotometry. SP-Sephadex C-25 column was used to separate ferrous and ferric ion in mineral water by stepwise elution with ferrozine and 1 % ascorbic acid-ferrozine solution. The concentrated and separated each ion could be determined spectrophotometrically at the analytical wavelenth of Fe(Ⅱ)-ferrozine complex (562nm).

  • The interaction of phenoxide anion with several cationic surfactant micelles (DTAB, TTAB, CTAB, CDEAB, and CTAC) was studied by UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants of phenoxide anion into the cationic micellar phase and the critical micelle concentration of these surfactants in the presence of the phenoxide anion could be determined from the absorbance changes. The measured solubilization constants were changed according to the following order: $K_s(CTAC)>K_s(CDEAB)>K_s(CTAB)>K_s(TTAB)>K_s(DTAB).$ Effects of salts(NaCl and NaBr) and n-alcohols(butanol, pentanol, and hexanol) on the solubilization of phenoxide anion by the TTAB system have been also measured and analyzed. There was a great decrease of solubilization constant and CMC with these additives. The standard Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy changes for the solubilization of phenoxide anion by the TTAB system were calculated from the temperature dependence of $K_s$ values.

  • 6-Methylquinolinium dichromate[$(C_{10}H_9NH)_2Cr_2O_7$] was synthesized by the reaction of 6-methylquinoline with chromium trioxide in $H_2O$, and characterized by IR, ICP. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol using 6-methylquinolinium dichromate in various solvents showed that the reactivity increased with the increase of the dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}$), in the order: cyclohexene < chloroform < acetone < N,N- dimethylformamide. In the presence of hydrochloric acid($H_2SO_4$ solution), 6-methylquinolinium dichromate oxidized benzyl alcohol and its derivatives(p-$OCH_3$, m-$CH_3$, H, m-$OCH_3$, m-Cl, m-$NO_2$) smoothly in DMF. Electron-donating substituents accelerated the reaction, whereas electron acceptor groups retarded the reaction. The Hammett reaction constant(${\rho}$) was -0.67(303K). The observed experimental data was used to rationalize the hydride ion transfer in the rate-determining step.

  • The protonation constants for the macrocyclic ligands 1,15,18-triaza-3,4;12,13-dibenzo-5,8,11-trioxa cycloeicosane (NdienOdienH$_4$), 1,12,15-triaza-3,4;9,10-dibenzo-5,8-dioxa cycloheptadecane (NdienOenH$_4$), and 1,15-diaza-3,4;12,13-dibenzo-5,8,11-trioxa cycloheptadecane (NenOdienH4) have been determined by the potentiometry in aqueous solutions (25$^{\circ}C$, I = 0.1, KNO$_3$). The stability constants for complexes formed in the aqueous solution (25$^{\circ}C$, I = 0.1, KNO$_3$) between the above ligands and the metal ions (Co(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), and Cu(Ⅱ)) have been measured by potentiometry. The rate of the ligand substitution reaction was measured spectrophotometrically by the addition of aqueous solutions of ethylenediamine to the solution of the complex. From the study of the temperature effect on the rate constant (k$_{obs}$), activation parameters (E$_a$,${\{Delta}H^{\neq}$, and ${\{Delta}S^{\neq}$) have been determined. The possible mechanism for the substitution reaction is proposed.

  • Synthesis of polymer-supported azacrown ether ion exchanger, {(4,5): (13,14)-dibenzo-6,9,12-trioxa-3,15,21-triazazabicyclo[15.3.1]heneicosa-1(21),17,19-triene-2,16-dione : DBPDA ion exchanger}, and its ion binding ability to alkali metal $(Li^+,\;Na^+,\;K^+)$ picrates were studied. The binding constants $(K_b)$ of DBPDA ion exchanger to the alkali metal picrates in ether type solvents were obtained by spectrophotometry. Binding constants of alkali metal ions were in the order to Li < Na < K, and alkali metal ions were formed 1 : 1 complexes with ligands of DBPDA ion exchanger. Also, $K_b$ was found to depend on the variables such as solvent and temperature. The binding constants for the complexes were obtained in the ranges of $2{\times}10^3{\sim}4{\times}10^4M^{-1}$. In order to obtain the enthalpy (${\Delta}$H) and entropy changes (${\Delta}$S)n the complexation process, Kb were plotted against the temperature in the ranges of 10∼40$^{\circ}C$ according to the van't Hoff theory. Enthalphy and entropy changes were found in the ranges of -2.71∼-3.79 kcal/mol, and -16.52∼-20.57 eu, respectively.

  • The solvent extraction of an inorganic trace mercury in sea water samples was studied using zinc diethyldithiocabamate $Zn(DDC)_2$ as chelating agent. The $Zn(DDC)_2$ which maintained the stability of DDC- in the acidic aqueous solution in the course of extraction was synthesized from NaDDC and $ZnSO_4$ in this laboratory. The trace of mercury(Ⅱ) was extracted at pH 3.0 from 100 ml of sea water into 10ml of chloroform containing 0.05 M $Zn(DDC)_2$ by shaking for 5 minutes. And from the organic phase, the $Hg(DDC)_2$ was back-extracted into 10ml of 1 to 1 mixed acid of each 3% (v/v) nitric acid and hydrochloric acid by shaking for 25 minutes. The mercury back-extracted was determined by a cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The trace mercury(Ⅱ) was so successfully extracted that this procedure could be applied to its determination in the sea water. That is, the recoveries of mercury in two kinds of samples into which as given amount of Hg(Ⅱ) was spiked were 90.0% and 93.3%, respectively.
