  • This paper describes the numerical modelling for the steady and unsteady forces of 3-D wings flying near the free surface based on a potential based panel method. For the steady problem where a wing flies over the fixed float surface, steady lift and drag forces are calculated for wings with and without end-plates having different sections, angle of attacks, aspect patios and flying heights. These numerical results are compared with the wind tunnel test results. The unsteady problem is treated as a boundary value one where a wing flies over the described wavy surface. The unsteady lift force variations of a wing due to different wave lengths and heights are calculated at different flying heights.

  • When RC structures are repaired or strengthened using FRP, it is required to cure for some Period under certain air temperature and then it is hopeful to avoid detrimental action caused by external vibration sources during that period. Therefore, an effect of repeated loading during Carbon Fiber Sheet(CFS) strengthening Process on the strengthening efficiency is studied through an experiment for a number of RC beams. Experimental results showed that the curing time of 24 hours without any repeated loading after CFS attachment were recommended for 1 ply strengthening, and 12 hours for 2 plies strengthening.

  • Background: Endotoxin or lipopolysaccharide(LPS) can prime phagocytic cells such as polymorphonuclear leukocytes, monocytes or animal peritoneal macrophages to generate increased amounts of secretory products such as oxygen free radicals and tumor necrosis factor, which play an important role in developing adult respiratory distress syndrome in gram negative sepsis. Human alveolar macrophages(HAM) are continuously exposed to various stimuli inhaled into the alveoli, and the response to LPS might be different in HAM. Therefore, we investigated the effect of LPS pre-exposure on HAM adhered to plastic surface and A549 cell(type II human alveolar epithelial cell line) monolayer. Methods: HAM were isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from normal lung of the patients with localized lung cancer and esophageal cancer. LPS was exposed to HAM for 2hrs before or after adherence to plastic surface of 24-well Linbro plate and A549 cell monolayer. And then HAM was stimulated with PMA(phorbol myristate acetate) or fMLP(N-formyl-methionylleucyl-phenylalanine). The amount of hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$) production in the supernatant was measured on the principle of peroxidase-dependent oxidation of phenol red by hydrogen peroxide. Results: LPS pre-exposure could not enhance $H_2O_2$ production in neither HAM adhered to plastic surface nor one to A549 cell monolayer. But LPS even in the absence of PMA or fMLP stimulation directly increased $H_2O_2$ release in HAM if added after the adherence to A549 cell monolayer. Conclusion: Endotoxin does not prime HAM, but may directly activate HAM adhered to alveolar epithelial cells. Further investagation will be necessary.

  • There was no significant difference in the final germination percentages(Experiment 1-3) as affected by sunflower root exudates between the control and the treated for the test species. In general(Experiment 1), however, germination onset was delayed the treated bottles. Germination rate was, also, reduced for both radish(Raphanus sativus L.) and rice(Oryza sativa L.). Therefore, the germination index was low in the treated bottles but germination gradually increased with time in the greated bottles in all test species so that the final germination percentages were similar between treatments. The root exudates of sunflower had significant inhibitory effects(Experiment 1-3) on the lengths of the shoots and roots of all the test species. Fresh weight was also significantly reduced in all test species. Sunflower seedlings(Experiment 3) in the treated(with the XAD-4 resin column) were larger and healthier than those in the control (without XAD-4 resin column) because of the removal of allelochemicals. The fresh weight of sunflower seedlings was markedly inhibited by sunflower root exudates. These mean that sunflower probably is an autotoxic crop.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation on the structural performance of precast ribbed panel specimens and bridge deck specimens fabricated from the panels. The panel specimens are developed for permanent deck forms of railway bridges (PSC girder). The decks of railway bridges have short lengths compared with highway bridges. Therefore, precast panels for railway bridges are different from those of highway bridges. The precast panels have ribs designed for crack control at the bottom of the sections. Two kinds of specimens were examined: one with 400-mm width and one with 1200-mm width. Three specimens of each type were fabricated, and a total of 12 specimens were tested. In this test, the ultimate load, strain of the reinforcement and concrete, crack width, deformation, and slip were measured. The structural performance of the specimens was assessed using the Korea railway bridge design code and Eurocode. All specimens met the current design criteria for structural strength and serviceability.

  • The current study is a part of series of research about the evaluation method of the unbonded tendon stress in prestressed concrete member at flexural failure. As the first part. previous design equations were examined in oder to find whether any modifications may be needed. A total of 167 experimental results tested for more than 40 years were gathered to build D/B and then previous proposed and codified equations were evaluated with the experimental relsults. The ACI Code equation and Naaman, Harajli, and Chakrabarti's equations were chosen for the purpose of examination. Then, the followings were obtained from the analytical examination. It is desirable to compute the tendon stress with the member analysis method instead of the sectional analysis method which has been used in the current ACI Code. The tendon stress may also be influenced significantly by the amount of ordinary bonded reinforcements and the loading types. And the current ACI Code overestimated the effect of span/depth ratio. As results, it was concluded that the revision of the ACi Code equation should be considered positively. Then, a new design has to be proposed with the reasonable and comprehensive investigation about influential factors on the tendon stress variation.

  • Road signs are important facilities in terms of providing information to driver, they are helpful for driver's judgment as deliver it's own information. However if there is occurrence dew on the road sign because of the change of temperature and humidity, it can be cause of accidents. Therefore it is necessary to develop anti-dew or dew resistance technology. In this research the anti-dew technologies such as insulation road sign and anti-dew film were compared with normal road sign, and the effectiveness analysis was conducted for each alternatives. The quantity of dew on the road sign was check using ANOVA and Tukey HSD and the relation between the retro-reflectivity and quantity of dew on the sign was check using Pearson correlation coefficient. As a result, the sample of anti-dew film attached road sign showed lesser quantity of dew compared with normal road sign. After 90 seconds, the difference of dew quantity for anti-dew film and insulation road sign showed statistically significant result. The relation of between quantity of dew and retro-reflectivity was inverse correlation. As a result, when analyzed the quantity of dew and retro-reflectivity a point of view anti-dew effectiveness, the anti-dew film and insulation road sign showed meaningful result.

  • This study investigated the probiotic and functional characteristics of Mukeunji starter, Lactobacillus curvatus ML17, isolated from Mukeunji. Lb. curvatus ML17 was confirmed as a safe microorganism due to its non-hemolytic activity and non-production of harmful ${\beta}$-glucuronidase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase. Tolerance to artificial gastric and bile juice of Lb. curvatus ML17 was investigated. After incubation in artificial gastric and bile juice, the number of surviving cells was $1.38{\times}10^8$ CFU/mL. According to the results of adhesion assay, this strain also exhibited good adhesion to Caco-2 cells. Lb. curvatus ML17 showed good antimicrobial activity against food borne pathogens, especially Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Cell-free extract of Lb. curvatus ML17 exhibited high levels of DPPH scavenging capacity and inhibitory effects on growth of AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells and HT-29 human colon carcinoma cells. These results suggest that Lb. curvatus ML17 has potential for application in functional foods.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the changes of nitrifying bacterial populations including Nitrosomonas sp. and Nitrobacter sp. in $A^2/O$ pilot plant with the configuration of anaerobic-anoxic-oxic reactors. The suspended nitrifying bacterial populations in mixed liquor and those of attached populations on granular carrier surface made by molded waste tire were analyzed by Fluorescent in situ Hybridization(FISH) method. The nitrification rate of a pilot plant showed the value of $1.97{\sim}2.98\;mg\;N/g$ MLVSS hr. The ratios of suspended ammonia oxidizer including Nitrosomonas sp. (NSO) to total bacteria in each reactor were oxic < anoxic < anaerobic. On the contrary, the ratios of suspended nitrite oxidizer including Nitrobacter sp. (NIT) were anaerobic < anoxic < oxic. The thickness, dry density and mass of the attached biomass on granular carriers were $180{\sim}188\;{\mu}m$, $38.5{\sim}43.9\;mg/cm^3$, $29.4{\sim}32.5\;mg/g$, respectively. Also, the ratios of attached nitrifier to total bacteria on granular carriers were similar regardless of ammonia/nitrite-oxidizer (NSO; 3.2%, NIT; 2.8%) and very low compared to those(NSO; $22.8{\sim}28.4%$, NIT; $17{\sim}26%$) of suspended nitrifier.

  • The effects of free surface and a strut on the lifting characteristics on a fin attached at the mid-chord of the strut are investigated experimentally in a circulating water channel. Variation of lift force on the fin is investigated with respect to free stream velocity(V), angle of attack of the fin(${\alpha}$) and ratio of the submergence depth of the fin to the chord of the fin(H/C). Attentions are focused on the lifting characteristics of the fin at shallow depths of submergence. Visualization of the free surface deformation along the strut and of the streamline about the fin is made in order to examine the inflow angle to the fin. Lift force on the fin alone i.e. in absence of the strut is also measured to investigate the difference in lifting characteristics of the fin caused by the strut. The results show that lift forces over the fin are largely affected by a free surface in the case of small submergence ratios(HiC<3.0). For HiC>5.0, the effects of the free surface are negligibly small. The inflow angle to the fin is significantly influenced by the strut and flow speed at the shallow depths of submergence. The deformation of the free surface is largely governed by the waves generated by the strut. However, for small submergence depths, the effects of the fin are found also significant.
