  • This study examined life in old age and images of the aged perceived by middle-aged and old-aged generations through indepth interviews with 30 persons aged 40s through 80s residing in three areas (city or county) in capital region in Korea to use it as basic information in planning social welfare policy and reorganizing social services in response to population aging in capital region in Korea. In terms of economic life of the middle-aged and olde-aged generations perceived older people's opportunities for work were rarely given to the aged due to ageism and negative stereotypes of aging and the aged, and the aged tended to regard themselves less able or unable to work. In terms of social life of the aged both middle-aged and old-aged generations perceived that the frequency of social participation was low, and the daily life of the aged was found mostly aimless, unorganized and unplanned. In terms of psycho-social life of the aged both generations still felt that they were not alienated from the family, neighbors, and the society. In terms of social welfare services both generations thought the aged needed basic services such as income maintenance, health care, housing services, and particularly they felt lack of social services. The old-aged generation was willing to travel to the distance taking more than one hour to receive social services that they would need. Both the middle-aged and the old-aged agreed upon the necessity of preparation for old age and the benefits of earlier preparation, however, they said that they could not prepare for their old age due to lack of social programs to help preparation for old age and due to spending for rearing and education of their children. In terms of perceived life in old age both middle-aged and old-aged generations tended to be slightly positive, but the degree of positiveness differed between respondents from urban area and those from rural area regardless of generations. Images of the aged were perceived to be overwhelmingly negative while positive images were very few in number regardless of generations. This finding may suggests that negative stereotypes on aging and the aged are also prevalent in Korean society like in Western societies. Based on findings of this study some implications for social policies in response to population aging in capital region were suggested.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of parenting stress on marital conflict in dual earner couples with children in early childhood. Actor and Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) was conducted in order to identify how parenting stress affect husband and wife, respectively and how this make the actor effect as well as the partner effect regarding the marital conflict. The research was conducted with 629 married couples from the forth wave of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) data. In order to examine the relationships between the variables and to evaluate the appropriateness of the research model, structural equation model was used. The results showed that the parenting stress had significant positive effect on the marital conflict. The partner effect of parenting stress was significantly positive. This result implies that the mutual dependence in dual earner couple's marital conflict and parenting stress should be considered in the process of intervention. In other words, to improve the effectiveness of intervention, practitioners should treat couples together rather than being focused on individuals.

  • This study aims to examine the effects of health status on life satisfaction and depression and to examine the effect of spirituality and religious involvement on this relationship among Korean older persons. On the basis of the previous literature, we hypothesize that health status will have a direct effect on life satisfaction and depression, but that spirituality and religious involvement will moderate this effect in addition to having direct effects on life satisfaction and depression. In light of the different gender effects on all five variables (health status, spirituality, religious involvement, life satisfaction, and depression), we also examine the effects of gender on these variables. The data for this study came from the Hallym Aging Study conducted by the Hallym University Institute of Aging from February to March in 2005. Through stratified multi-stage random sampling, 1409 individuals aged 65 and over, who lived in Seoul and Chuncheon in Korea. Multiple regression analysis was used to investigate whether health status, gender, spirituality and religious involvement could predict life satisfaction and depression, and whether the direct relationships were moderated by interactions among these variables. We took three ordered regression steps to examine the hypothesis; the first step contained the covariates of age, education, living with spouse, monthly expense, living with adult children, and household income. We also entered gender into this step, so it would be adjusted for in relation to the other covariates. The second step then looked for any direct effects that gender, health status, spirituality, and religious involvement might have on life satisfaction and depression above and beyond the effects of the covariates. The third step contained interaction terms to look for further variance accounted for by indirect, moderating effects on life satisfaction and depression. The results showed that health status had a significant effect on both life satisfaction and depression, and religious involvement had a significant effect on depression. Spirituality and religious involvement were found overall to be a moderator, reducing the negative effect of health status on life satisfaction and depression. The direct effect of religious involvement and the moderating effects of spirituality and religious involvement on life satisfaction and depression are consistent with the view that spirituality and religion are resources and benefit the well-being of older adults.

  • This study examined the factors associated with exit from and reentry into the rehabilitation center among homeless persons with mental illness. Shelter use of a total of 203 study population was monitored between 2004 and 2008. Cox's proportional hazard model was employed to analyze the factors influencing the rate of the first exit from and the first reentry into the rehabilitation center. Also, competing risk analysis was conducted to examine the factors differently associated with the type of the first exit from the rehabilitation center: a positive exit and a negative exit. This study found that homeless persons with mental illness were less likely to experience the negative exit while their resident registration status not being abolished on the first entry into the rehabilitation center, having more frequent hospitalizations during the rehabilitation center stay, being connected to the family members, having more participations into the basic rehabilitation, mental rehabilitation, and vocational rehabilitation programs during the rehabilitation center stay. Age, the number of hospitalization and of the participations into the mental rehabilitation programs during the rehabilitation center stay were associated with the rate of the first reentry into the rehabilitation center.

  • The study examined the mediated-moderation effect of parental reflection levels from maternal childhood experiences by the parents to mother's reaction to negative emotions of their preschoolers by examining it through the lens of parental role satisfaction. The participants in this study were 327 mothers who and their infants aged 3-6 years. They completed questionnaires on the maternal childhood experiences scale, parental reflection scale, parental role satisfaction scale and mother's reaction to negative emotions of their preschoolers scale. The results of the structural equation model analysis are as follows. First, a mediating model revealed that the relationship between maternal childhood experiences by parents and mother's reactions to negative emotions of their preschoolers was mediated by parental role satisfaction. Second, the results revealed the moderation effect of parents reflection levels on the relationship between maternal childhood experiences by parents and parental role satisfaction. Finally, parental reflection levels were also seen to have a mediated moderation effect of parental reflection level from maternal childhood experiences to mother's reaction to negative emotions of their preschoolers through parental role satisfaction. These results indicate the importance of parental reflection and parental role satisfaction.

  • This paper presents a motion-capture-based projection VR system to explore the effectiveness of gamification in improving environmental awareness. We examine the key components of positive and negative VR game content and analyze the impact of individual and cooperative play methods on promoting sustainable behaviors. Our findings are as follows. Firstly, we discovered that the use of positive content in individual play mode was effective in improving awareness of the importance of recycling. Secondly, we confirmed that the use of positive content in cooperative play mode and the use of negative content in individual play mode were each effective in enhancing awareness of the seriousness of environmental pollution. Thirdly, we found that experiencing positive content first, followed by negative content, in individual play mode was effective in increasing interest in the environment. Based on these findings, we determined that adjusting the order of use of positive and negative content is more effective than simply using positive or negative content alone for improving environmental awareness. Moreover, considering the importance of recycling, the seriousness of environmental pollution, and the level of interest in the environment, we confirmed that individual play mode is effective and cooperative play mode can be more effective depending on the measure.

  • This study investigates what older adults have image of older adult with relation to their self-identity. Fourteen participants are interviewed in this study. The main findings are as follows. Their response to image of older adult is divided in the form of 'denial' and 'accommodation' about social images of older adults. 'Denial' has 'total denial' and 'selective denial' while 'accommodation' includes 'acceptive accommodation', 'selective accommodation' and 'unwilling accommodation'. 'Total denial' indicates that the participants describe older adults very negatively, and they regard themselves as a person who is totally different from the older person they describe. 'Selective denial' represents that the participants have two types of older adults: negative and positive. They describe that they are close to the positive type of older adults themselves although they do not admit that they are older adults. 'Acceptive accommodating' does not describe older adults negatively, and they identify themselves as older adults. 'Selective accommodating' are very similar to 'selective denial' although the former differs from the latter in that they accept that they are older adults. 'Selective accommodating' also includes negative and positive types of older adults, and this type of participants admit that they are older adults, and believe that they belong to the positive type. In contrast to 'acceptive accommodating', 'unwilling accommodating' describes older adults very negatively. However, the participants belonging to 'unwilling accommodating' comes to accept that they are older adults due to irresistible realities.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the moderating effects of psychological flexibility on the relationship between perceived stress and depression in university administration staff. A total of 186 participants completed the questionnaire. This data was analyzed using the SPSS program. The results of the analysis showed that perceived stress, positive perception and psychological flexibility had significant effects on depression, but negative perception didn't have significant effect on depression. The results verified the moderating effects of psychological flexibility on the relationship between perceived stress and depression. We discussed that the stress of university administration staff was more closely related to positive perception such as a decrease in positive functioning than negative perception such as loss of control. We also discussed that psychological flexibility can reduce the effect of stress on depression and prevent it. We suggested acceptance commitment therapy to improve psychological flexibility as an intervention method for stress and depression issues in university administration staff.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the moderating effects of the stress coping styles on the effects of internet addiction on the self-esteem of the 2030 generation during the Covid19 period. The 762 samples were selected through an online survey, and the collected data were conducted using the SPSS WIN26.0 program for frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. As a result of the analysis, Internet addiction had a negative effect on self-esteem, and only seeking social support among the four sub-factors of stress response served as a moderator variable in the relationship between Internet addiction and self-esteem. Based on the results, the followings were suggested: expansion of research subjects regarding Internet addiction and interdisciplinary convergence study, providing universal provision of stress coping management programs, building a community at the local level, and discovery and reinforcing variables that offset the negative role of self-esteem of 2030 generations.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of flipped learning lesson on the human social behavior and social environment subject. In order to achieve this object, this study conducted qualitative analysis of class-evaluation and self-evaluation and quantitative analysis using the questionnaire. As a result, it was confirmed that flipped learning method works very effectively in the theoretical curriculum of social welfare. Participants assessed that their comprehension and presentation skills improved. In addition, their self-esteem improved after this class. However, this teaching may be rather negative for participants who had difficulties in pre-learning or a passive attitude. In order to improve this problems, the instructors should be prepared to make pre-learning better. As well as, they should prepare countermeasures for passive participants, and help interact well among the participants.
