  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to recognize change of menstrual patterns and dysmenorrhea according to obesity indices and physical activity in female college students. Methods: From March 22nd to May 14th, 2010 we researched 1,407 women students at OO College by questionnaires to investigate their menstruation, dysmenorrhea, obesity and physical activity. Results: 1. Triglyceride(TG) was decreased statistically in the regular group of menstrual cycle as compared with the irregular group. 2. Menstrual duration was not associated with obesity indices. 3. Higher BMI was associated with more menstrual amount. 4. Dysmenorrhea was increased with decreasing BMI. 5. Neither menstrual patterns nor dysmenorrhea were associated with physical activity, but dysmenorrhea was decreased in minimally active group. Conclusion: This study showed the significant effect of menstruation and dysmenorrhea on obesity indices and physical activity. Obesity is related to menstruation and dysmenorrhea, but physical activity isn't related to them.

  • Objectives: To identify the difference of autonomic nervous system activity in women with overactive bladder between women with pre-menopausal onset and post-menopausal onset. Methods: Total of 46 women with overactive bladder participated in this study. Patients were categorized in two groups, patients with pre-menopausal onset(n=31) and post-menopausal onset(n=15). We measured and compared parameters of Heart Rate Variability of patients. The results were analysed using SPSS for windows 12.0. Results: On frequency domain analysis, the patients with post-menopausal onset had significantly decreased mean value of Total Power, High Frequence, Low Frequence, compared with the patients with post-menopausal onset. Conclusion: Decreased Total Power of patients with post-menopausal onset indicated that they may have had decreased activity of autonomic nervous system. Also, the patients with pre-menopausal onset had relatively increased sympathetic activity than the patients with post-menopausal onset.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of oriental treatments on the cervical incompetence. Methods: Treatment of incompetent cervix has traditionally been surgical correction of presumed physical deficit in tissue strength with an encircling or cerclage suture, placed electively between 12 and 15 weeks. Despite the prolonged controversy about the role of cerclage, a randomized trial of cerclage versus bed rest or no therapy in women with atypical history of incompetent cervix has not been concluded. We treated a 32-year-old female who had been suffering from cervical incompetence with Herbal medicine(Gamidangkwisan). Results: After oriental medical treatment, the clinical symptom of Cervical incompetence was improved and she was delivered in 42 weeks. Conclusion: This case study shows that the oriental medical therapy is effective in treating cervical incompetence. If we make more studies about this disease, it will bring the high satisfaction of patient and the improvement of treatment rate.

  • Purpose : Uterine leiomyoma (fibroids) are benign smooth muscle tumors originating from the myometrium. These benign neoplasms of monoclonal origin are typically diagnosed during the reproductive years, occurring only after puberty and tending to regress after menopause. In the present study we used Chiljehyangbu-hwan to determine its growth inhibitory effect and apoptosis in human uterine leiomyoma cells. Methods : Primary cultured human uterine leiomyoma cells were treated with Chiljehyangbu-hwan. Cell viability analysis was analyzed by MTS assay and FACS was performed to ascertain the effects Chiljehyangbu-hwan. DNA fragmentation analysis and casapase-3 activity test were done. Expression of apoptosis related proteins were evaluated by Western blot analysis. Results : Cell viability was significantly influenced by Chiljehyangbu-hwan treatment in a dose-dependent manner in leiomyoma cells compare to normal myometrial cells. FACS showed that Chiljehyangbu-hwan induced Sub G1 arrest. DNA fragmentation assay was carried out and apoptosis was detected. Activation of caspase-3, down-regulation of Bcl-2, with concomitant increased expression in Bid and Bax were observed. Chiljehyangbu-hwan treatment of uterine leiomyoma cells resulted in a concentration-dependent cell death induced via the mitochondrial pathway.
