  • A cultural model can change as times go by within one ethnic group. For example, a strong familism has existed for a long time throughout a history of Korea, but it is, just like most social values, now in the midst of a rapid change. Accordingly, Koreans' belief about family values and responsibility for supporting their old parents are changing, too. Especially, supporting parents was one of the highly-estimated traditional values, but it seems to no longer exist. However, one's own rearing experience might be a moderator of association of his or her familism with the ebbing value. Therefore, we aim to address the following research question: What is the relations among college student's familism, their own rearing experiences, and their beliefs about supporting old parents. A total of 155 college students participated in this study. Data were analyzed by SPSS. T-test and ANOVA were used for data analysis. The findings are that college students' beliefs in supporting parents are significantly influenced by their familism and rearing experiences: Those with a strong familism and warm rearing experience have solid beliefs in supporting parents.

  • The extension of life expectancy due to modernization means an extension of the benefit time for elderly care and disease. However, compared to the increase in the elderly, the attitude of children toward parental responsibility is gradually weakening. These social phenomena bring alienation, hopelessness, and stress to life in old age, and the resulting sense of helplessness leads to suicidal thoughts or intentional death (suicide), becoming a social problem. The intentional death (suicide) of the elderly is a social phenomenon that often occurs around them, and the reality can be seen through the movie. In this study, the main character 'Soyoung' in the movie 'The Woman Who Kills' and the surrounding characters 'Song Old Man', 'Jongsu', and 'Jaewoo' in conversations with the elderly problem and death factors were analyzed in the Matrix. ), and then applied to the 'flow chart of problems in the elderly due to modernization' compiled by Byeong-Woo Lim (2019), to explore the factors of intentional death (suicide). As a result of the analysis, the four elderly were exposed to problems of the elderly such as disease, alienation and loneliness, poverty, and loss. (Suicide) was analyzed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the trend of the familism and the awareness of parent-supporting, showing how personal background variables affect the familism and how the familism affect the awareness of parent-supporting, The data were collected from May 20, 1998 till June 5, 1998 for 621 college students consisted of 300 male strdents and 321 female students. SOSS-PC was used for data analysis, and the data were tested by ANOVA, t-Test, Pearson's Correlation, Multiple Regression Analysis, and Duncan Test. The major findings are as follows: 1) The college students' familism generally tends to show low scores (M=2.79), indicating the modern familism-individualism. 2) The college students' awareness of parent-supporting is reported to be high(M=4.23); the highest awareness of parent-supporting is financial supporting, the next is service supporting, then emotinal supporting. 3) For personal background variables, male students rather than female students, the students who have parents with more monthly income, and those who have experience in living with grandparents tend to have more traditional familism. 4) Older students, the students with more traditional familism, those who find more satisfaction in family relations, and male students rather than female students tend to show higher awareness of parent-supporting. 5) In causal relations among the personal background variables, the familism, the awareness of parent-supporting, the variables with a significant impact on the familism are gender, parents' monthly income, and experience in living with grandparents, in order of impact. Age, the familism, satisfaction in family relations, and gender, in order of impact, affect the awareness of parent-supporting. Especially, the familism has the highest correlations with the awareness of financial, emotional, and service supporting, and shows considerable causal impact on the awareness of parent-supporting in general. That is to say, the more the familism, the more the awareness of the parent-supporting.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the preference for living with adult children of the baby-boomer generation and the elderly based on independent variables such as demographic characteristics, the values of their children and the consciousness for supporting their parents. The National Survey of Korean Families was done by the Ministry of Equality and Family in 2010. Respondents were 664 baby boomers and 628 elderly, and the results are as follows. First, the baby boomers rely heavily on their spouse, whereas the elderly rely heavily on their children. While both groups desire to live with their spouse in their later years, and the elderly rely the most on their children, they are reluctant to live together. This result shows that the elderly have high expectations for financial and emotional support from their children, but in reality, the elderly have lower expectations for living together and they prefer to live alone or with their spouse. Second, the boomers, who for the most part live in big cities, have comparatively high average monthly income and jobs and own a house, consider filial obligation as their own responsibility and yet tend to live independently. The boomers, who have a relatively high education level, consider living with aged parents as the children's obligation and consider their children as the most reliable people in their lives, and thus have high expectations to live together with their children. Third, the elderly, with a spouse, who consider having raised children to be their happiness, while considering providing financial support for the aging parents to be the children's responsibility, at the same time accept that the obligation of support lies on themselves, the government or the society, and thus have lower expectations of living with their children in later years. The elderly, now living with their family, with generous financial plans for their aging years and considering the children's success as their own success, have higher expectations of living together with their children.
