  • When carbon electrode is used as an anode in Li ion battery, passivation film forms on the electrode surface during the initial charge process due to so called Solid-Electrolyte Interphase (SEI). The passivation film formed by solvent decomposition during the initial charge process affects charge/discharge capacity. In this paper, 1 M $LiPF_6,EC:DEC$ (1 : 1, volume ratio) electrolyte with $Li_2CO_3$, at various temperatures, the electrochemical characteristics of passivation film formed on Kawasaki Mesophase Fine Carbon electrode surface were investigated by using chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy. Experimental observations indicated that as solvent decomposition occurred, the decomposition voltage was strongly dependent on ionic conductivity, which was low in the process at low temperature. The impedance of passivation film formed during the initial charge process, were dependent on the temperature.

  • The effects of alloying elements, Cr, Mo, and N on repassivation characteristics of stainless steels were investigated by using the abrading electrode technique and a.c impedance spectroscopy. The role of alloying elements on the stability of passive film and their repassivation characteristics were examined using alloy steels such as Fe-Cr, Fe-Cr-Mo, 304, 304LN, 316, and 316LN. The electrochemical characteristics of the passive film were investigated by in-situ d.c. and a.c. electrochemical methods. Localized corrosion resistance is believed to have much to do with the stability and repassivation characteristics of the passive film. The effects of alloying elements on the current transients and repassivation kinetics were systematically examined by using the abrading electrode technique and a.c. impedance spectroscopy. The experimental results were analyzed in order to elucidate the relationship between passive film stability, repassivation characteristics, and alloying elements.

  • The pitting corrosion behavior of 329LD cast lean duplex stainless steel and CF3M cast austenitic stainless steel was investigated in chloride environments. The pitting corrosion resistance of the 329LD alloy was superior to that of the CF3M alloy because the pitting potential, passive region, and critical pitting temperature of the low Ni-low Mo 329LD alloy were higher than those of the high Ni-medium Mo commercial CF3M alloy. There are two main reasons for the enhancement of the pitting corrosion resistance of high Cr-low Momedium N 329LD alloy compared to the low Cr-medium Mo CF3M alloy: First, the pitting resistance equivalent number (PRENδ+γ) value of the 329LD alloy is higher than that of the CF3M alloy. Second, the passive region of the 329LD alloy is larger than that of the CF3M alloy. It indicates that the synergistic effect of the three elements by adding high Cr and low Mo-medium N to the 329LD alloy enhances the passivity of the passive film, thereby increasing the pitting corrosion resistance. It was verified that based on the PRENγ of austenite (γ) and PRENδ of ferrite (δ) values calculated using an N-factor of 16, the pitting corrosion of the 329LD alloy was selectively initiated at the γ-phases because PRENγ value of austenite (γ) was smaller than that of ferrite (δ), and finally propagated from the γ-phase to the δ-phase.

  • In this study, the IR drop theory was adopted to explain the initiation of crevice corrosion in the framework of IR drop in crevice electrolyte. Furthermore, the electrochemical polarization was measured to study the mechanism of crevice corrosion for type STS430 stainless steel. lest method adopts under condition that the size of specimen is $10\times20\times5mm,\;in\;1N\;H_2SO_4+0.1N\;NaCl$ solution, and the artificial crevice gap sizes are three kinds, the Micro capillary tube size is inner diameter 0.04 mm, outer diameter 0.08 mm. Crevice corrosion is measured under the applied voltage of passivation potential -200mV/SCE, resulted from anodic potentio-dynamic polarization to the external surface along the crevice. The potential difference was measured by depth profile by Micro capillary tube which inserted in the crevice. The obtained results of this study showed that 1) As artificial crevice gap size became narrow, the current density was increased, whereas no crevice corrosion was found in the crevice gap size $3\times0.5\times16mm\;in\;1N\;H_2SO_4+0.1N\;NaCl\;solution\;at\;20^{\circ}C$ 2) potential of the crevice was about from -220 to -358mV which is lower than that of external surface potential of -200mV The results so far confirmes that the potential drop(so-called IR drop) in the crevice is one of the major mechanisms the process of crevice corrosion for 430 stainless steel.

  • Potentiodynamic corrosion tests were conducted to know the corrosion characteristics of the NiTi intermetallic compound composed of pure Ni and Ti in artificial saline. Tafel extrapolation and linear polarization technique show similar results. Corrosion current Icorr and corrosion rate was increased in the order of NiTi
