  • This paper considered optimization method of appending a shape on a disc in an attempt to improve core functions, which are inherent in flow characteristics. The paper also verifies the optimization method of appendage shape with a Class 150 200A Butterfly valve. Then the design of experiment (DOE) with an orthogonal array is performed to analyze the effect of form parameters by grey relational analysis and analysis of mean (ANOM). And this study sets flow coefficient as an object functions for optimization, and the conventional disc model and the optimal appendage shape on disc model are compared by computational fluid analysis. The paper concludes that an optimal appendage shape on disc model achieves wider usability by a wider operating range.

  • The structural strength tests are usually performed to evaluate the structural strength and to verify the structural design and analysis of the vehicle structures. In this paper, the development of a compressed loading type apparatus to load distributed force over the surface of vehicle structure subjected to external loads was described. This apparatus is for structural materials which are easily to fail because of concentrated stresses. This apparatus can apply loads to specimens without any damage on the test specimen's surfaces by using flexible membrane and can be applicable to several kinds of surface profile of structures. The structural strength tests for the flat structure and curved structure with this apparatus were successfully performed, and the test results showed that this type of loading apparatus can be adequate to verify the structural integrity of the fragile structures.

  • In ship and of offshore structures, there exist many local panels of various shapes having many kinds of attachments reducible to damped spring-mass systems. For the vibration analysis of panels, analytical methods such as Rayleight-Ritz method or the assumed mode method can be efficiently applied. There have been many studies on the vibration analysis of rectangular panels using the analytical methods but relatively few for arbitrary shape panels. An efficient formulation based on the assumed mode method is presented for the vibration analysis of an arbitrary quadrangular plate having concentrated masses, supporting springs such as pillars and spring-mass systems. In the formulation, the natural coordinate system is used for the efficient treatment of an arbitrary quadrangular shape. Through some numerical calculations, accuracy and efficiency of the presented method are shown.

  • Structural Dynamics Modification (SDM) is a very effective technique to improve structure's dynamic characteristics by adding or removing auxiliary structures, changing material properties and shape of structure. Among those of SDM technique, the method to change shape of structure has been mostly relied on engineer's experience and trial-and-error process which are very time consuming. In order to develop a systematic method to change structure shape, surface grooving technique is studied and successfully applied to HDD cover model. To verify Surface Grooving Technique, fully embossed HDD cover model was optimized. And comparing with previous optimization result, the effectiveness of this surface grooving technique was checked. The shape of groove and 1 st natural frequency were converged to the same result of previous optimization.

  • Horseshoe vortices generated around the juncture between the ship and her appendages often lower a performance of the ship by increasing the appendage drag and making a non-uniform wake on the propeller plane. This paper investigates numerically how the fillet around the juncture of the leading edge influences the juncture flow and the appendage drag. Computation has been made by solving Navier-Stokes equations with MAC method and the flows are at the Reynolds number of 5,000. Five fillets with different height-breath ratios and curvatures are chosen as test models to find out the effects of the shape of fillets on the appendage drag and wake. Computational results show that fillets with a smaller height-breath ratio and/or with a concave curvature has smaller appendage drag and more uniform wake.

  • Faced with global agenda of greenhouse abatement program including regulations and $CO_2$ emission trading scheme, shipping companies are enforced to a high level of efficiency in fuel consumption. Accordingly shipbuilding companies worldwide are required to develop fuel-efficient ships which otherwise traditionally consume a great amount of fossil fuels. In this dissertation, relevant to the improvement of fuel efficiency for commercial ships, design methodology through the numerical simulations are intensively described. This work consists of derivation of effective hydrodynamic design practice based on the application of longitudinal grooves to effectively improve the pressure distribution around ship hull. The primary objective of the present study is to improve ship resistance performance using longitudinal grooves which originate from long strips on the abdomen of humpback whale. Several groove shapes have been extensively investigated and the proposed shape efficiently controlled the variation of pressure distributions acting on the hull surface.

  • The flow noise generated by hull appendages is directly related to the performance of the sonar in terms of self-noise and induces a secondary noise source through interaction with the propeller and rudder. Thus, the noise in the near field should be analyzed accurately. However, the acoustic analogy method is an indirect method that is not used to simulate the propagation of an acoustic signal directly; therefore, diffraction, reflection, and scattering characteristics cannot be considered, and near-field analysis is limited. In this study, the propagation process of flow noise in water was directly simulated by using the lattice Boltzmann method. The lattice Boltzmann method could be used to analyze flow noise by simulating the collision and streaming processes of molecules, and it is suitable for noise analysis because of its compressibility, low dissipation rate, and low dispersion rate characteristics. The flow noise source was derived using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the hull appendages, and the propagation process of the flow noise was directly simulated using the lattice Boltzmann method by applying the developed flow-acoustic boundary conditions. The derived results were compared with Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings results and hydrodynamic pressure results based on the receiver location to verify the usefulness of the lattice Boltzmann method within the near-field range in comparison with other techniques.

  • The present study aims to design an optimized hull shape of a floating pendulum-type wave energy converter(WEC). The purpose of these structure is to improve the performance and stability of the WEC by reducing its motion under operating and survival wave conditions. In this study, motion reduction structures, like restoring and dampling plates were installed on a floating pendulum WEC that has been the subject of previous studies. Restoring plates were installed to increase the restoring force and shift the natural period to a shorter period. Damping plates were installed to shift the natural period to a longer period by increasing the added mass. The effects of the structures were then analyzed under different incident wave conditions. The design parameters for the motion reduction structures were size, shape, and installed position. The wave-induced motion characteristics and performance of the floating pendulum WEC were also investigated numerically. Based on the simulation results, we are able to optimize the motion reduction structure of the WEC, thus improving its efficiency and durability.
