The Effects of Ecological Variables on Volunteering among Older Adults: The Applications of General Ecological Theory of Aging (노인자원봉사활동에 있어서 생태환경 변수의 효과: 노화의 일반생태학 이론을 적용하여)

  • This paper aims to estimate the effects of environmental variables on volunteering among older persons and decide relationships between independent and dependent variables. The thesis conceptually points out that the integrated theory of resources too much emphasizes the important roles of human, social and cultural capital, but overlooks the influences of ecological environments in explaining volunteering among the older persons. And the thesis tries to apply the general ecological theory of aging to explaining volunteering of older people together with resource frameworks, and to estimate the effects of ecological environment variables on volunteerism for senior citizens. Using a micro data of 2009 National Social Survey by Statistics Korea, the paper screens out 10,268 subjects who are believed to socially retire and be above 55 years older. The multiple OLS regression and binomial logistic regression techniques are used to estimate the effects of ecological environments and resources on volunteering. The analysis results show that all of environmental and resource variables are related to volunteering at the level of p<.000. This means that environmental variables have independent effects on the volunteerism, controlling for resource variables. This results suggest that both theories have empirical evidences in explaining volunteerism in Korea. Also, at the end of paper, theoretical and policy implications for practices and future studies are discussed.

A Study on the Mediating Effect of the Sense of Community on the Relationship between Volunteering and Community Capacity among Older Adults: Focused on the Older Participants of the Government-Sponsored Elderly Volunteer Program for Prevention of Depression and Suicide (노인자원봉사 활동과 지역사회 역량에 관한 지역사회 소속감 매개효과 연구: 보건복지부 노인전문자원봉사 지원사업 참여노인들을 대상으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the influence of volunteering on the sense of community and the community capacity, and the mediating effect of the sense of community on the relationship between volunteering variables(the period and satisfaction of volunteering) and the community capacity as well. Study population is 1,416 elderly volunteers who participated in the government-sponsored elderly volunteer program for prevention of depression and suicide in 2016. The results show that the experience of volunteering plays an important role in improving the sense of community and the community capacity among the older participants. As for the analysis of the mediating effect, the sense of community has a perfect mediating effect between the period of volunteering and the community capacity, and a partial mediating effect between volunteering satisfaction and the community capacity. Based on these findings, the theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

A Model On Voluntary Activity in Library Services for Disabled People in Public Libraries (공공도서관 장애인서비스 자원봉사활동 모형 연구)

  • Recently, as voluntary activity has become more widespread, there have been some voluntary activity movements in the provision of library services for people with disabilities. This study aimed to develop a model on voluntary activity in library services for disabled people in public libraries. Survey data collected through three data collection methods showed that volunteer activities in public library services for the disabled were very poor, and recommended the training of library staff and volunteers serving disabled people, the management of educational programs for librarians about the disabled and the dissemination of standardized manuals. From the results of the survey, a voluntary activity model, based on three factors, the aims of library services, the types of the disabilities, and volunteer services including specific sub areas of services, was developed. Community Services of University: A Case Study of Chonnam National University (대학의 지역사회 봉사: 전남대학을 사례로)

  • This article shows how the university can contribute to regional development through its public services. To that end, this article firstly tried to examine the functions and activities of the universities in civic engagement. Secondly the actual contents and various programs of the Chonnam National University located in Kwangju, South Korea are analyzed as a case study. It is seen that Chonnam National University is emphasizing the civic engagements in terms of continuing educations, openings of the facilities, and volunteers services or social works of the students. But the more active connections between university and its community are still needed for the enhanced responsibility of the faculty about public services and for the enduring civic engagements.

College Student Volunteers' Motivations, Benefits, Satisfactions to Volunteer in Mobile Phone Education for the Elderly (노인 휴대폰활용교육 대학생 봉사자들의 자원봉사 참여동기, 성취, 만족도)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze motivations, benefits, and satisfactions of the college student volunteers. We carry out the pre-to-post survey with 615 college student volunteers (male 245, female 367) who have participated in the mobile education program for the elderly funded by a Telecom. The instruments consist of VFI (Volunteer Functions Inventory) developed by Clary & Snyder (1999), including 30 items for motivations, 12 items for achievements, and 5 items for satisfactions of volunteering. The items for motivations and achievements are comprised of 6 subcategories: career, value, understanding, protective, enhancement, and social. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Enhancement motivation is the highest, followed by understanding, value, career, protective, and social motivation. (2) Social benefit is the highest, followed enhancement, career, understanding, value, protective benefit. (3) The difference between motivation and benefit in social category is the largest, followed by career, enhancement, value, protective, and understanding category. While benefit is higher than motivation in all other categories, motivation is higher than benefit just in value category. (4) High motivation-high benefit, high motivation-low benefit, low motivation-high benefit, and low motivation-low benefit groups are dichotomized by the median of each motivation and benefit. In all six categories, high motivation-high benefit group shows the highest satisfaction, but low motivation-low benefit group shows the lowest. In short, benefit shows stronger correlation with satisfaction than motivation does. Finally, we suggest several implications for future research and policy of college students' volunteering based on these results.

The Empirical Analysis on Supply of Volunteer Labor and Economic Valuation of Volunteering in Korea (한국 자원봉사활동의 결정요인과 경제적 가치평가)

  • This study investigates the stance of the social capitals that explain voluntary services. The testing results indicate that the decision to join the voluntary services is significantly affected by ages, householder, marriage, preschool child, gender, physical condition, income, education, job position, occupation, region, day, etc. And a giving time is significantly influenced by ages, marriages, working together of husband and wife, gender, income, job, occupation position, a type of living house, etc. Moreover, we find that the economic values of the voluntary services estimate at 21,467 billion won a year in 2004, and GDP ratio is 0.2% that is lower than those of major developed countries.

Effect of Volunteering on Career Development of the University Students Majoring in Social Welfare (자원봉사활동이 사회복지학 전공생의 진로발달에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of volunteering on career decision level and career preparation behavior of the university students majoring in social welfare. For this purpose, a survey of 208 university students in Kangwon-do was conducted and the data was analyzed. The results of this study are summarized as follows: The career decision level of the university students majoring in social welfare is 2.65, and career preparation behavior is 2.28. By using a multiple regression, volunteering satisfaction and participation activeness had a positive effect on the career decision level, and grade and volunteering satisfaction had a positive effect on the career preparation behavior. This study finally discussed theoretical and practical implications for university student's volunteer strategies on the results.

  • This study collected data of college students' volunteering for maritime and fisheries and found that only few subjects participated in it. They took part in control for release of oil, services for sea village and coastal cleansing. Most were satisfied with their volunteering referring contributing to environment protection, self-fulfillment, social interaction, gaining special experiences and assimilation with nature. The subjects were not satisfied with lack of systematic and effective services, monolithic activities, insufficient publicity, deficient rewards and a shortage of self-capacity. Based upon the research findings, implications for college students' volunteering policies were suggested to promote volunteering for maritime and fisheries.

  • Corporate interest and participation to the corporate philanthropy have increased since sustainable business management and win-win business management is on the rise to be the major task of the corporation, due to global economic recession and shrinking of consumption market. Employee participating corporate philanthropy, such as giving or volunteering, are especially increasing recently. This study analyzed the effects of giving and volunteering participation of the employees on job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior mediated by recognition and attitude about corporate philanthropy. Structural equation modeling was employed for statistical analyses. As a result of the study, it is clear that giving participation of the employees has a positive influence in job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior, mediated by the recognition and attitude about corporate philanthropy. However, the effects of volunteering participation of the employees on job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior mediated by recognition and attitude about corporate philanthropy was non-significant. Based on this result from the study, factors to increase the inner stakeholder effect of employee participating corporate philanthropy are proposed.

  • The importance of social responsibility is growing, and as a result of social awareness, many universities and institutions are carrying out community service activities. Although the volunteer portal site has excellent performance and good accessibility, the overall service performance of a specific organization cannot be managed because of personal information. Almost community service managers of a organization manually manage their community service activities without the support of a community service management program. In this study, have been feature analysis of existing portal site for volunteer coordination, then a prototype was designed and developed as a model of social contribution management system so that universities and organizations can systematically support and manage the social service activities of members based on the questionnaire about social contribution management system.
