Intricate deflection requires many conventional actuators (motors, pistons etc.), which can be financially and spatially wasteful. Novel smart soft composite (SSC) actuators have been suggested, but fabrication complexity restricts their widespread use as general-purpose actuators. In this study, a hybrid manufacturing process comprising 3-D printing and casting was developed for automated fabrication of SSC actuators with $200{\mu}m$ precision, using a 3-D printer (3DISON, ROKIT), a simple polymer mixer, and a compressor controller. A method to improve precision is suggested, and the design compensates for deposition and backlash errors (maximum, $170{\mu}m$). A suitable flow rate and tool path are suggested for the polymer casting process. The equipment and process costs proposed here are lower than those of existing 3D printers for a multi-material deposition system and the technique has $200{\mu}m$ precision, which is suitable for fabrication of SSC actuators.
In this work, pellets consisting of cellulose-based natural fiber bamboo and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was prepared by extrusion process and then bamboo fiber/PLA biocomposites with various fiber contents were produced by injection molding process. The water treatment effect of bamboo fibers on the flexural, tensile, and impact properties and heat deflection temperature of the biocomposites were investigated. The thermal stability of bamboo and the flexural properties, tensile modulus, and impact strength depended on the presence and absence of water treatment as well as on the fiber content, whereas the heat deflection temperature are influenced mainly by water treatment. The increase of the mechanical and impact properties of biocomposites is ascribed to the improvement of the interfacial adhesion between the bamboo fibers and the PLA matrix by the water treatment. The result suggests that the pre-treatment of natural fibers by using water, which is environment-friendly and labor-friendly, may contribute to enhancing the performance of biocomposites.

Though many divided wall columns are implemented in field as energy-efficient distillation columns, its application is limited due to the difficulty of building a new column. A novel energy-efficient distillation system utilizing the existing columns is proposed here. The proposed can reduce the energy consumption by about 39% comparing with the existing system. And it is shown that the proposed improves the column operability over the existing. The tray numbers of the added columns have no significant influence on the composition of a side draw.
In order to overcome one of the most pronounced shortcomings of conventional laminated composites, such as the low damage tolerance due to delamination, the thermoplastic materials and 3D (three-dimensional) preforms have been utilized in the manufacture of composite materials. From the newly developed process termed as the co-braiding, hybrid yarns of the thermoplastic fibers (PEEK) and reinforcing fibers (carbon) have been fabricated. In order to further enhance the delamination suppression, through thickness fibers have been introduced by way of 3D weaving technique in the fabrication of textile preforms. The preforms have been thermoformed to make composite materials. Complete impregnation of the PEEK into the carbon fiber bundles has been confirmed. For the comparison of mechanical performance of 3D woven composites, quasi-isotropic laminates using APC-2/AS4 tapes have been fabricated. Tensile and compressive properties of both the composites have been determined. Furthermore. the open hole, impact and CAI(Compression After Impact) tests were also carried out to assess the applicability of 3D woven textile reinforced thermoplastic composites in aerospace structures.

In this paper the effects of the length of carbon fiber on the wear properties of carboni carbon composites were investigated. Carbon/carbon composites were fabricated by the liquid impregnation method using the resol-type phenolic resin as a matrix precursor and PAN-based, non-surface treated carbon fiber as a reinforcement. The measured values of the friction coefficient of carbon/carbon composites against AlSl 304 stainless steel ranged from 0.2 to 0.3 under the operating condition used in this study. The effect of the length of carbon fiber on the friction coefficient of carbon/carbon composites were not found. But, it was realized that the wear rate of carbon/carbon composites tends to increase, as the length of carbon fiber increases.

In this paper, a multi-modem for process automation of non-destructive inspection (NDI) which possibly generates various kinds of data is implemented and verified. Here, a variety of data such as control signals, text data, image data generated by inspection devices, sensors, computers are transmitted to the multi-modem via serial, Ethernet, and coaxial cable. We exploit a communication network in which powerlines are used as backbone transmission media. Thus, the implemented multi-modem has various ports and corresponding interfaces for data transmission. As a result of practical experiments, the multi-modem maintains almost constant data rate with little waveform distortion. In addition, the experiments confirm that the modem operates normally under extreme variation of temperature. It is, therefore, considered that the multi-modem can contribute significantly to implement powerline communication (PLC)-based process automation for NDI in which various kinds of data are practically generated.

In resin transfer molding(RTM), race-track effects and non-uniform fiber volume fraction may cause undesirable resin flow patterns and thus result in dry spots, which affect the mechanical properties of the finished parts. In this study, a real time RTM control strategy to reduce these unfavorable effects is proposed. This control rule is accomplished by means of the permeability mapping and pressure regulation. Through numerical simulations, the validity of the proposed scheme is demonstrated.
