As the operating condition for the penetrating missile has been more advanced, the survivability of main charge has been strongly required when the warhead impacts the target. Lots of efforts to desensitize explosives such as the development of insensitive molecular explosives or optimizing plastic-bonded explosives(PBX) systems has been made to enhance the survivability of main charge. However, these efforts face their limits as the weapon system require higher performance. Herein, we suggest a new strategy to secure the survivability of main charge. We applied structurally supportable aluminum honeycomb(HC) structure to cast PBX. The aluminum HC structure reinforces the mechanical strength of cast PBX and helps it to withstand external pressure without the reaction like detonation. In this study, impact resistance character, shock sensitivity and internal blast performance of PBXs reinforced with HC structure were investigated according to the application of aluminum HC structure. The newly suggested aluminum HC structure applied to cast PBX was proved to be a promising manufacturing method available for high-tech weapon systems.
The $SiC_p-reinforced$ preforms fabricated by spray casting process were hot-extruded and subsequently T6-treated, and the morphology of the silicon phase and the grain size for these preforms and extruded samples were examined by Image Analyzer. Experimental observation revealed that with increase in volume percent of SiC particles, the grain size and silicon phase of the $Al-Si/SiC_p$ composites become finer, the shape of Si phase is changed from blocky to granular type, and aspect ratio of Si phase tend to become unity. Wear-tests with various sliding velocities, show that the wear resistance of spray cast specimen is increased remarkably compare to the permanent mold cast specimen at the sliding velocity range of $1.98{\sim}2.38m/sec$.. Microstructural observations for the worn surfaces of specimens revealed that wear resistance of Al-Si alloys at certain sliding velocities could be improved not only by the fine grain size of aluminum matrix but also the fine size and granular shape of silicon phases. The wear resistance of $SiC_p$ reinforced aluminum composites was found to be sensitive to the volume percentage of the reinforcing particles. The worn surfaces with various sliding velocities, show that change in wear mechanism seems to occur at the sliding velocity of near 2m/sec for all samples, and such a change in mechanism is delayed with increase in $SiC_p$ volume fraction.

Iron-based metal matrix composites have been recently investigated for the use of inexpensive abrasion resistance material. This paper carried out to investigate the in-situ reaction effects on the microstructural characteristics and the formation mechanism of tungsten carbides in a white cast iron matrix. The specimens of Fe-3.2%C-2.8%Si alloy cast-bonded with tungsten wire were cast in the metal mold and isothermally heat treated at $950^{\circ}C$ up to 48 hours. The typical microstructure of heat treated specimens showed the reaction layer of WC at the interface of tungsten wire and the carbon depletion zone between the WC layer and the matrix. During the formation of WC layer, if the carbon supply is insufficient due to the decarburization of matrix or the isolation of matrix by cast-bonded W wires, the reaction layer develops coarse hexagonal crystalline WC. From the microstructural investigation, it was found that the volume of WC layer and the carbon depletion zone increased linearly with the isothermal heat treating time. This results supported that the formation rate of WC in the white cast iron matrix is controlled by the interfacial reaction with a constant reaction rate.
The copper clad steel wire is used extensively as lead wires of electronic components such as capacitors, diodes and glass sealing lamp because the wire combines the strength and low thermal expansion characteristic of Fe-Ni steel with the conductivity and corrosion resistance of copper. In order to fabricate the copper clad steel wire, several processes including electro-plating, tubecladding extrusion process and dip forming process have been introduced and applied. The electroplating process for the production of copper clad steel wire shows poor productivity and induces environmental load generation such as electroplating solution. The dip forming process is suitable to mass production of copper clad steel such as trolley wire. and need expensive manufacturing facilities. The present paper describes the improvement of the conventional continuous casting process to fabricate copper clad steel wire, which its core metal is low thermal expansion Fe-Ni alloy and its sheath material is copper. In particular, the formation of intermetallic compound at interface between core and sheath was investigated in order to introduce optimum continuous casting process parameter for fabrication of copper clad steel wire with higher electrical conductivity. The mechanical strength of copper clad steel wire was also investigated through wiredrawing process with of 95% in total reduction ratio.
AC4A $Al/Al_2O_3+SiC_p$ hybrid composites were fabricated by the squeeze infiltration technique. Effect of applied pressure, volume fraction of reinforcement($Al_2O_3$ and SiC) and SiC particle size($4.5{\mu}m$, $6.5{\mu}m$ and $9.3{\mu}m$) on the solidification microstructure of the hybrid composites were examined. Mechanical properties were estimated preliminarly by fractographic observation, hardness measurement and wear test. Results show that the microstructure of the hybrid composites were quite satisfactory, namely revealing relatively uniform distribution of reinforcements and refined matrix. Some aggregation of SiC particle caused by particle pushing was observed especially in the hybrid composites containg in fine particle($4.5{\mu}m$). Refined matrix was attributed to applied pressure and increased nucleation sites with addition of reinforcements. Fractured facet also revealed finer for the hybrid composites possibly due to refined matrix. Hardness and wear resistance increased with volume fraction of reinforcements. For hybrid composites with $9.3{\mu}m$ SiC, hardness was somewhat lower and wear resistance higher than other composites.
The influences of Cu and Mg addition on wear properties of SiC particulate reinforced Al-Si metal(alloy) matrix composites were investigated. Metal matrix composites were prepared by combination of compocasting and hot pressing techniques. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) The composite with Mg addition exhibits letter wear resistance than that with Cu addition. It is considered that Mg addition improved wettability of matal matrix composite by the strong segregation to the SiC / Al matrix interface. 2) After homogenization treatment, it was found that the interfacial segregation of Mg was predominant, while that of Cu was not detected. 3) The SiC / Al-11Si eutectic composite exhibits better wear resistance than the SiC / Al-6Si hypoeutectic composite does. 4) It seems that the increase in the amount of Mg addition affects on the uniform dispersion of SiC particulates, on the refinement of microstructure and on age hardening and these effects cause wear resistance improvement of composites.
The solidification behavior of the squeeze cast composites of aluminum alloys reinforced with boron fiber($100{\mu}m$) and silicon carbide fibers($140{\mu}m$ and $15{\mu}m$) were investigated. Al-4.5wt%Cu and Al-l0wt%Mg were chosen for the matrix phase of the composites. In the squeeze cast specimen with high thermal difference between fiber and melt, the average secondary dendrite arm spacing(DAS) in reinforced alloy is smaller than that in unreinforced alloy. It was also observed that primary ${\alpha}$ and non-equilibrium eutectic, which seems to be penetrated and solidified at the final stage of the solidification of the matrix, are irregularly distributed around fibers. It is considered that cold fibers serve as heterogeneous nucleation site. While in the remelted and resolidified specimen without temperature difference, the DAS was not changed with reinforcement and microstructure reveals non-equilibrium eutectic with relatively uniform thickness around fibers. It might be evident the nucleation starts at interfiber region. Microsegregation decreases with the decrease in cooling rate and with reinforcement in the as-squeeze cast specimen. Al-10wt% Mg alloy shows less microsegregation than Al-4.5wt%Cu alloy.
The mechanical properties of $Al/Al_2O_3$ composites have been investigated in relation with manufacturing factors such as applied pressure of casting and binder amount of preform. It was found that tensile strength increases with an increase of applied pressure, but decreases with binder amount. Increase of tensile strength is attributable to refinement of microstructure, improvement of intefacial bonding between $Al_2O_3$ short fiber and matrix, decrease of porosity in the matrix. Due to the high thermal stability of alumina short fiber, tensile strength of composites at $150^{\circ}C$ was superior to matrix alloy at room temperature. To evaluate the strength of composites, modified Kelly-Tyson's equation was introduced. Manufacturing factor M was obtained calculating from experimental data. M values were increased with applied pressure, but decreased with binder amount. The initiation of microcrack appeared to be at interface and reinforcement colony. Amount of micro-dimple was increased with applied pressure, and interfacial debonding phenomenon was remarkable with an increase of binder amount.
The squeeze infiltration process is potentially of considerable industrial importance. The performance enhancements resulting from incorporation of short alumina fiber into aluminum are well documented. These are particularly significant for certain automobile components. Aluminum matrix composite automotive parts, such as diesel engine pistons or engine blocks are produced using squeeze casting apparatus or pressure die-casting apparatus. But the solidification process gets complicated with manufacturing parameters and the factors for porosity formation have not fully understood yet. In this study the formation of porosity during squeeze infiltration has been studied experimentally to achieve an improved understanding of the squeeze infiltration process for manufacture of short-fiber-reinforced components, particularly the mechanism of porosity formation. Al-based MMCs produced under a range of conditions were examined metallographically and the porosity characterised;a kind of matrix, an initial temperature of melt, and a volume fraction of reinforcement. The densimetry and the microscopic image analysis were done to measure the amount of porosity. A correlation between manufacturing parameters and defects was investigated through these.
Aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with various amounts of $Al_2O_3$ short fibers have been produced by a combined technique of rheo-compocasting and hot extrusion. Distribution of fibers in the composites fabricated by rheo-compocasting was relatively uniform. A good degree of uniaxial fiber alignment has been achieved by hot extrusion, but a lot of fibers fractured during extrusion. The tendency of fiber fracturing increases as the aspect ratio and the amount of fibers increase. Relatively good bonding between fiber and matrix was obtained by the formation of $MgAl_2O_4$ and Mg(Al, Fe)$_2O_4$ at the interface between fiber and matrix. In extruded composites, fiber-strengthening effect was relatively small since a lot of fibers fractured during hot extrusion. On the other hand, dispersion strengthening effect may increase. In order to improve the fiber strengthening effect, it is important to optimize the extrusion condition with consideration of metal flow in extrusion die.
