  • In this paper, we present an optimization method for the single Dallenbach-layer type microwave absorbers composed of E-glass fabric/epoxy composite laminates. The composite prepreg containing carbon nanotubes (CNT) was used to control the electrical property of the composites laminates. The design technology using the genetic algorithm was used to get the optimal thicknesses of the laminates and the filler contents at various center frequencies, for which the numerical model of the complex permittivity of the composite laminate was incorporated. In the optimal design results, the content of CNT increased in proportion to the center frequency, but, on the contrary, the thickness of the microwave absorbers decreased. The permittivity and reflection loss are measured using vector network analyzer and 7 mm coaxial airline. The influence of the mismatches in between measurement and prediction of the thickness and the complex permittivity caused the shift of the center frequency, blunting of the peak at the center frequency and the reduction of the absorbing bandwidth.

  • This study describes viscoelasticity analysis of carbon-fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite material. One of the most important problem during high temperature molding process is residual stress. Residual stress can cause warpage and cracks which can lead to serious defects of the final product. For the difference in thermal expansion coefficient and change of resin property during curing, it is difficult to predict the final deformed shape of carbon-fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite. The consideration of chemical shrinkage can reduce the prediction errors. For this reason, this study includes the viscoelasticity and chemical shrinkage effects in FE analysis by creating subroutines in ABAQUS. Analysis results are compared with other researches to verify the validity of the subroutine developed, and several stacking sequences are introduced to compare tested results.

  • Fiber-reinforced composite laminates have high specific stiffness and strength and are expected to be useful for weight reduction in weight-sensitive industries, such as automotive and aerospace. However, designing composite laminates is often dependent on designer's experience and intuition because of difficulties in determining the number of plies and stacking sequence, which tends to lead to over-design. In this study, optimal design of composite laminates was performed to minimize weight, while withstanding the given load. Based on the enumeration method, all combinations of stacking sequence satisfying the design guideline for composite laminates were considered. Composite laminates were discretized into panels. Optimal number of plies and stacking sequence for each panel were determined considering local load on each panel and contiguity across adjacent panels. Failure index from Tsai-Wu criteria was optimized for strength and buckling analysis was performed for compressive load. Stacking angles of 0, ±45 and 90° were used.

  • In this paper, we conducted high velocity impact test for Carbon/Epoxy composite laminates and proposed advanced method for predicting the absorbed energy of composite laminates. During high-velocity impact test, we discovered loss of projectile mass macroscopically using high speed camera, thus we calculated the absorbed energy of composite laminates by taking loss of projectile mass into account. We proposed a model for predicting the absorbed energy of composite laminates subjected to high-velocity impact, the absorbed energy was classified into static energy and dynamic energy. The static energy was calculated by the quasi-static perforation equation that is related to the fiber breakage and static elastic energy. The dynamic energy can be divided by the kinetic energy of deformed specimen and fragment mass. Finally, the predicted absorbed energy considering loss of projectile mass was compared with experimental results.

  • This paper describes the results of structural integrity and crashworthiness of Automatic Guideway Transit(AGT) vehicle made of sandwich composites. The applied sandwich composite of vehicle structure was composed of aluminum honeycomb core and WR580/NF4000 glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite facesheet. Material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the composite facesheet model, and the effective equivalent damage model fer the orthotropic honeycomb core material. The finite element analysis using ANSYS v11.0 was dont to evaluate structural integrity of AGT vehicle according to JIS E 7105 and ASCE 21-98. Crashworthiness analysis was carried out using explicit finite element code LS-DYNA3D with the lapse of time. The crash condition was frontal accident with speed of 10km/h at rigid wall. The results showed that the structural integrity and crashworthiness of AGT vehicle were proven under the specified loading and crash conditions. Also, the modified Chang-Chang failure criterion was recommended to evaluate the failure modes of composite structures after crashworthiness event.

  • This study explored the feasibility of replacing a metal link with a carbon fiber/epoxy composite link and assessed its capacity to withstand a given load condition using failure criteria. The micromechanics of failure (MMF) criterion was employed to predict the failure mode of the composite material, and mechanical tests were conducted to obtain reference strength parameters for MMF. The findings revealed that the stress distribution was concentrated near the hole, and weaknesses were found around the hole and at the end of the link under bending conditions. Based on the failure index, matrix tensile failure was predicted at the end of the link, and fiber compression failure occurred near the hole. The methods and results obtained from this study can provide valuable guidelines for assessing the safety of composite materials under specific load conditions when replacing metal parts with carbon fiber/epoxy composites to achieve weight reduction.

  • In the manufacturing process of thermosetting carbon fiber composite materials using an autoclave, the internal temperature changes according to the set temperature cycle. This temperature change causes the resin in the composite material to cure. Heat is generated through the chemical reaction of the resin, which can result in a difference between the temperature inside the autoclave and the temperature of the composite material. Previous research assumed that the temperatures of the composite material and the autoclave were the same and analyzed to predict the residual stress and thermal deformation after manufacturing. However, these stresses and deformations depend on the temperature and degree of cure of the composite material. Therefore, this study verifies a thermal-chemical model analysis technique that takes into account the heat generated by the chemical reaction of the resin to accurately calculate the temperature and degree of cure. Additionally, case studies were conducted for different thicknesses to investigate whether this model exhibits similar trends across varying thicknesses.

  • The honeycomb composite joint structure designed for application to a tilting KTX railroad car body is subjected to bending loads of a cantilever type. Honeycomb sandwich composite panel-joint attached in the real tilting car body was fabricated and sectioned as several beam-joint specimens for the bending test. The fracture behaviors of these specimens under static loads were different from those under cyclic loads. Static bending loads caused shear deformation and fracture in the honeycomb core region, while fatigue cyclic bend loading caused delamination along the interface between the composite skin and the honeycomb core, and/or caused a fracture in the welded part jointed with the steel under-frame. These fracture behaviors could occur in other industrial honeycomb composite joints with similar sub-structures, and be used for improving design parameters of a honeycomb composite joint structure.

  • In this study, carbon fiber reinforced cement composites(CFRCs) reinforced with short noncircular type carbon fibers were fabricated and properties(drying shrinkage, resistance to freezing and thawing, and fracture toughness) were compared with those of the CFRCs reinforced with circular type carbon fibers. It was found that these properties greatly depended on the shape and length of carbon fibers. The drying shrinkage of CFRCs reinforced with C-type carbon fiber was superior to other CFRCs. This effect was increased with a high aspect ratio of fiber. The resistance to freezing and thawing was increased with the fiber length and fiber volume percent, but there was on remarkable effect to fiber shape. Fracture toughness and resistance to crack propagation of CFRCs reinforced with C-CFs were improved compared with other CFRCs. It was believed that the more absorption of fracture energy into the larger interface caused an increase in fracture toughness and resistance to crack propagation.
