A Successful Beginning for Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) Composite Materials in Bridge Applications (섬유보강폴리머(FRP) 복합재료의 교량 적용)

  • 부식 열화는 교량 기술자들에게 있어서 지속적인 도전을 요구하는 문제가 되어왔는데, 스텔스 항공기를 개발하게 한 새로운 재료 기술은 교량의 부식을 해결할 수 있게 하였다. 즉, 경량의 고강도 재료로 높은 피로 저항성을 갖고 있고, 부식에 강한 복합체는 교량의 재료로서 아주 바람직한 성질을 갖고 있다 섬유 보강 폴리머(FRP) 복합재료를 교량의 건설에 이용하려는 프로젝트는 1998년 현재 80 여 개가 넘게 진행되고 있는데, 이 중 미국 내에서 31개의 프로젝트가 수행되고 있다. 이 글은 미국 내에서 FRP복합체를 교량 공학 분야에 적용하려는 초기의 성공적인 시도들에 관한 내용으로 복합체의 장점, 특성, 교량 적용시 고려 사항, 그리고 향후 복합재료에 관한 기술을 토목 구조물에 적용하는데 필요한 소요 기술 등에 관하여 정리한 것이다. 이 새로운 재료는 신설 구조물의 건설과 기존 교량의 보수 및 보강에 모두 적용할 수 있으며, FRP복합체 기술을 토목 구조물과 기반 시설물 건설 분야에 적용하는 것은 지금까지 성공적인 결과를 보여 주고 있다 미국연방도로국(FHWA, Federal Highway Administration)은 이 기술을 미국 내 교통 기반 시설물인 신규 교량의 건설은 물론 기즌 교량의 보수 및 보강에 활용하는 방안에 대하여 관심을 갖고 있다.

Study of Failure Mode and Static Behavior of Lightweight FRP Truss Bridge Deck System (복합재료 트러스 교량시스템의 정적거동 및 파괴모드에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • There is a concern with worldwide deterioration of highway bridges, particularly reinforced concrete. The advantages of fibre reinforced plastic(FRP) composites over conventional materials motivate their use in highway bridges for replacement of structures. Recently, an FRP deck has been installed on a state highway, located in New York State, as an experimental project. In this paper, a systematic approach for analysis of this FRP deck bridge is presented. Multi-step linear numerical analyses have been performed using the finite element method to study the structural behavior and the possible failure mechanism of the FRP deck-superstructure system. Deck's self-weight and ply orientations at the interface between steel girders and FRP deck are considered in this study. From this research, the results of the numerical analyses were corroborated with field test results. Analytical results reveal several potential failure mechanism for the FRP deck and truss bridge system. The results presented in this study may be used to propose engineering design guideline for new and replacement FRP bridge deck structure.

Numerical Study of Lightweight FRP Bridge Deck System Induced by Thermal Stress by Fire (화재 발생 시 열응력에 의한 복합재료 교량 시스템의 거동에 관한 연구)

  • This analysis evaluated small and large temperature gradient effects on the FRP deck considering lightweight of FRP deck and ply orientations at the interface between steel girders and FRP deck. Finally, the analytical results shows the possible failure mechanism of FRP deck under various temperature changes and its corresponding index is suddenly varied depending on the rapid change of temperature on the deck plate.

Failure Strength Analysis of Simply Supported Sandwich Slab Bridges made by Composite Materials (복합재료로 만들어진 단순지지 샌드위치 슬래브 교량의 파괴강도해석)

  • In this paper presented, a design method of sandwich slab bridge of simple supported made by composite materials. Many of the bridge systems, including the girders and cross-beams, and concrete decks behave as the special orthotropic plates. Such systems with sections, boundary conditions other than Navier or Levy solution types, or with irregular cross sections, analytical solution is very difficult to obtain. Thus, Finite Difference Method is used for analysis of the pertinent problem. For the design of bridge made by the composite materials, cross-section is used the form-core shape because of this shape is economical and profitable, and for output of the stress value used F.D.M. Based the experimental of a composite specialist, an equation expressing the rate of decrease of tensile strength of glass fibers based on increase of mass was obtained. From these equations, one can estimate the rate of tensile strength reduction due to increased size. Tasi-Wu failure criterion for stress space is used. Strength-failure analysis procedure, using these reduced tensile strength, is presented.

In general, the analytical solution for such complex system is very difficult to obtain. In this paper presented, a design method of slab bridge of simple supported made by composite materials. For the design of bridge made by the composite materials, cross-section was used the form-core shape because of this shape is economical and profitable, and for output of the stress value used finite difference method. In this paper, the rate of tensile strength reduction due to increased size was considered. Strength-failure analysis procedure, using the reduced tensile strength, was presented. And also numerical study was made for these cases.

  • The behavior of composite materials bridge decks for use in deteriorated bridge decks replacement are investigated experimentally in this study. As for the performance evaluation of bridge decks, experimental studies on the 5 test specimens with 1/10 scale of full size were carried out. Three specimens were fabricated from sandwich upper flange and two specimens were fabricated from laminated upper flange. The constituents of bridge decks were glass fiber performs and epoxy resin. The experimental results, i.e., the maximum strength stiffness, stiffness, and deformation capacity, were summarized. The results of the finite element analysis were compared with the experimental results for the verification of validity.

Estimation of Dynamic Response of Advanced Composite Material Decks for Bridges Application under Various Vehicle Driving Velocities (복합재료 교량 바닥판의 주행속도에 따른 동적응답 평가)

  • Applications of advanced composite material in construction field are tending upwards and development of all composite material bridges is making progress rapidly in home and abroad due to their high strength to weight ratio. This paper formulated the dynamic responses of the laminated composite structures subjected to moving load and analyzed the various dynamic behaviors using the finite element method. The nondimensionalized natural frequencies of a simply supported square-laminated composite plate are considered for verifications. Mode superposition and Newmark direct integration method are applied for moving load analysis. For structural models, dynamic magnification factor calculated for various velocities of the moving load and displacements characteristics of laminated composite structures due to the moving load are investigated theoretically Numerical results are presented to study the effects of lamination scheme, stacking sequence, and fiber angle for laminated composite structures during moving load. The various results on moving load and lamination through numerical analysis will present an important basic data for development and grasp the behavior of all composite material bridges.

  • Recently, the composite material becomes more popular and its usage is kept expanding from aerospace to civil structures such as bridge decks and irrigation and drainage pipes. The major cause for the popularity can be found in its high strength, light, and excellent anticorrosive properties. Nevertheless the methods to accurately predict and analyze its structural behavior are extremely limited. This has been the major reason circumventing more prevalent use of the composite materials in civil structures. This study is a pre-study to develop the analyzing models for accurate prediction of the composite material structures. Thus, various tests were performed for GFRP pipes to estimate material characteristics of GFRP in this study. And stress-strain relation of GFRP was suggested as a bilinear relation.

  • 모든 건설재료에서 치수의 한계가 있다. 현수선교나 사장교인 경우 강재를 사용하면 최대지간 거리 $5000m{\sim}7000m$ 가 가능하나, 유리섬유 복합재료를 시용하면 이의 2 배, 탄소섬유 복합재료를 사용하면 이의 3 배가 가능하다. 지간 거리가 20,000m 가 되면 가장 중요한 하중은 바람하중이다. 복합재료의 여러 장점 때문에 거대한 규모의 건물, 교량등 구조물이 건설될 때 구조 기술자는 풍(바람)하중을 구하고 다룰 수 있어야 한다. 이 논문에서는 구조 기술자가 풍 하중을 구할 수 있게 기초 이론과 기본기술을 제공하고 있다.
